High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

My daughter will be using her Dell laptop that she's used at home, hopefully it suits her in college as well.

DD's old laptop died about 2 days before we left for move in- she ended up with a HP 2-in-1 from Best Buy that had the specs she wanted and the power and memory required for school. It was a good price, too- we were hoping not to have to spend too much.

Mine had theirs provided in high school by the school (and their old ones aren't working), so we had to get new ones, unfortunately.

Add them to the list! Haha

Dd's Dell bit the dust at the end of senior year. Just bought her one last night. A Dell 2 in 1. Small enough to easily lug to all her classes. All her books are E-books so she will have it with her all the time.

Dd bought herself a nice Lenovo gaming computer (higher end graphics and screen, big memory) a couple years ago (she bargain hunted while she saved up-ended up getting a really great deal on it) - will work beautifully in her room, but a bit heavy to carry around. So she bought an HP notebook to carry with her to classes and library-well DAD bought that for her. Wasn't too bad though price wise.

I bought her a Thirty-One duffle with her name on it for her to haul stuff around when she comes home-great bag, lots of room and a separate pocket for shoes. I figured between that and her laundry bag she should be OK with traveling/bringing stuff to and from school...She didn't want to take an actual suitcase (worried about storing it in her room)

My son and husband will be hitting Best Buy the next day my son is off.

At this point, I think I only have odds and ends to pick up at BB&B.

We talked last night at dinner about what else he needs; he asked me to pick up a body pillow. When he slept over for orientation, the dorm bed left a gap between the mattress and the wall, and he wants the dorm pillow to fill that.

My son did try to contact his roommate, using the phone number the school gave him. Mom answered, and gave my son the roommate's phone number-- but it was the same number he had just called.
He tried contacting via Facebook, but hasn't gotten a response yet.

So we may wait on the fridge/micro until move in day. If, at that point, I have to run off and pick one up, I can.

Yep, DS wants a laptop computer. On the hunt for a reasonably priced one. Since he has orientation in 2 weeks, I told him to see/ask what others are using. Since he's commuting, I am still having trouble saying my kid's in college now. LOL

My son had a pretty specific requirement from his major (game design). He had to buy the MacBook Pro 15". It is the most expensive computer that has ever entered our house! I actually upped the amount on the electronic portion of my renters insurance to make sure we had enough to cover it! Both sides of our family were really great and very generous with his High School Graduation presents so that he could afford to buy the computer. He is completely in love with this computer (which is good because it will need to last him well past college!).

Depending on your insurance policy deductible, you might want to consider a student policy for your son. Our homeowners has a high deductible so even though DD's belongings would be covered, she doesn't own enough to make a claim.

Dh purchased a policy for DD20 two years ago from http://www.nssi.com. We went with a $50 deductible and estimated the value of her belongings. The premium is only $70-80 per year.

Freshman year- no problems. Last Fall, first day of classes, she drowned her Macbook. She took it to the Apple store, DH filed the claim, we paid the $50 deductible, and NSSI sent us a check for $750 to cover the repair.

If we never have another claim in her remaining two years, it's been worth the cost of the policy.

I also recommend AAA if your student will be driving far from home. DD is 4 hours away and used it twice freshman year. Once for assistance changing a flat and once for a tow to a mechanic. Some friends have suggested that DH could have just taught her to change a flat but her school is in a major metro area. She drives weekly in areas without safe options for changing a tire.

DH and I did some research and already had a reliable mechanic sourced before she needed it.

Good luck to you all. I'm very happy that I don't have to help anyone move this month, or say any goodbyes.

Good advice, thank you!

DH insists on buying DD a new computer. I'm staying out of it because I am cheap and think she can use her old one until it breaks. DD is as cheap as her mother, but we are humoring daddy since his parents and brother are chipping in for it as a graduation gift. DD said she'd rather have the money.

That is great advice! I will definitely check it out for something to use in the future!

Our policy has a computer endorsement which sounds similar to what you are describing (the electronic items are covered with a small deductible separate from our regular household goods). I had to up our current coverage from the $2k we had to $5k to cover everyone's electronic devices in case something weird happened and they were all destroyed at the same time. I spoke with my insurance agent and while my son lives in a dorm he can stay on my policy. If he gets an apartment off campus then we will want to get him his own policy

My baby turns 18 today!! She found out last night that her cousin's girl friend will be right across the hall from her in the dorm, I didn't realize she was having any worries about it until I saw how excited she got at this news.

We got a student policy from CollegeStudentInsurance. $3000 of coverage for her electronics and other belongings in the dorm- less than $90 premium and a $25 deductible with full replacement cost coverage. Just for her laptop, phone, and Xbox, it is worth it.

Are any of you purchasing a laptop lock for your kids? My daughter just bought a Macbook Air - quite an upgrade from the Chromebook she has used for the last 4 years. I'm nervous about someone walking off with it, but not sure if they are worth it or used much. Any insight would be appreciated!

We ordered her macbook on August 2 and it is still not here. I didn't realize it would take so long. It is coming from China and yesterday it had made it to Alaska. This morning it said Louisville, and for some reason when I track on the computer now it says it is back in Alaska! EEk, I hope that is wrong. I tracked from my phone and the last thing is still Louisville. Not sure why I am getting different answers when I am doing the same thing, tracking from the email they gave me. I had tried in store pickup, closest Apple store is about an hour and half away, and it was saying it would take even longer for that. Aug 12 versus Aug 10 for home delivery.

Yes, I posted this yesterday.

Was going to ask you guys what your students are using for college computers, but my two made their decisions today, we ordered them, and they're on their way! DD got a MacBook and DS got a PC.
Not too worried about it getting stolen, as DD will keep it close to her, and I did notice in walking around the school that many students were using them. Campus police at orientation did mention being careful with electronics if using public transportation. I'm more worried about accidental damage or technical problems, but we did get the insurance package.

Either someone is very confused with their scanner, or else your Macbook is having the trip of a lifetime, lol!
