High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

For the moms who are disappointed about their kids not going to prom can I join you? :o DS decided a while ago not to go but while in the company of a respected teacher it seemed like he might have changed his mind. I was all set with his decision until then and got my hopes back up again. Prom is May 21st and he hasn't done a thing to get ready for it. I asked him about it the other day and my hopes were dashed yet again. I really wanted him to have this experience.

I feel for you guys. Our older 2 didn't go to prom. No photos. No scrapbook pages. No tears at the door as they headed out for the evening. ;) But mostly I wish they had those memories with their friends.

If it helps any, it bothers me more than it bothers them. I'm quite sure they haven't given it a second thought. Just not their style. :p (One has graduated college and one is a year away).

I told my daughter she's my last great hope for prom photos. Barring any crazy drama, I think she'll be happy to soak us for a really expensive dress and evening out. :)

My son was talking briefly about going to the prom, but hasn't mentioned it much lately.

We'll see how it plays out.

Today is dd's last day in high school. Actually Tuesday was but she went to the school yesterday to go to choir and to help the choir director with the music library the rest of the day. And today she went to help one of her favorite teachers with some end of year stuff and finish in the library. If she didn't have a hair appointment tomorrow I think she would find a reason to go then too! All year she has been saying "can't wait to get out of there!" And now they may have to evict her! Lol.

Next week they have senior dinner and awards night, senior breakfast, practice and then graduation on Thursday.

Well tomorrow is DD's orientation. We are driving to campus after she gets out of school and they have some planned activities for tonight, she gets to spend the night in the dorm and then we come home tomorrow. Tomorrow is also prom so she will be missing it. Teenaged girls are a strange bunch. She complained for months that she didn't want to go to prom, but when she found out that she had a conflict, it was a big deal all of a sudden. She's okay with it now as a boy from a neighboring school asked her to his prom - although they have been talking and might just decide to do a dinner/movie date instead (DD doesn't like formal dances, as I've mentioned). The lack of pictures don't bother me in the least.

She has decided to join the marching band. The drum major is an alumnus of her high school and they have been chatting. He gave the band director her phone number and he called yesterday to make arrangements for her to audition while she's there. At first I thought it might be too much, but then I think of my most successful college semesters and they were also my busiest. I think when the kids aren't busy is when things have a chance to go sideways. I did some nosing around in the schedule and it seems to conflict with the only open session of an introductory course that she needs, but I've figured out some ways to circumvent that if she asks for my help. (she can switch it with medical terminology and take it next semester or she can take it at the neighboring campus for example) I am basically going to let her figure it out on her own though - the advisors should be able to help her too. I'm only putting in my two cents if she asks.

Prom is tonight and it's raining :( but the Seniors spirit is so great that I don't think they'll mind it :) My DD just came in from getting her hair & makeup done, now she's relaxing before going to one of 2 places the group is taking photos. She decided to go with a group instead of with a date even though the guy that was going to ask her is in the group :)!

It poured the day of dd's prom. It was great lighting for pictures right up until the time to get them made and the bottom fell out so the group ended up not getting together for pictures. Dd and her date met dil at someone's home for pictures, another girl went on to the train station but the rain prevented a lot of shots and the third just had her mom do some at home. As soon as pictures were done and they all headed out for dinner--rain stopped and the sun even came out!!

We are at DD's second round state playoff soccer game. They are doing well- 3-0 in the second half.

Updating- they won 6-0! On to round 3. Tough for our girls, because we have a different school schedule from all other public schools in the state. Every other school goes until June 10th, so finals are after June 1st. Our school finishes on May 27th, so finals start in a week. Round 3 is on Tuesday, and if they continue on to round 4, they will be playing during finals.

And if they are lucky enough to get all the way to the championship game, it will be the same day as commencement!!

We joked that the girls would be like Superman, all pulling apart their gowns after the graduation ceremony to reveal their soccer uniforms underneath!

Just got back from registration - DD is all registered for fall and winter semester. She tried out for marching band and got in. We kind of knew she would because they need euph players very badly. She was nervous about the sight reading but did fine. I reminded her that her band got straight first division ratings at state festival and that was with her playing her instrument too. The director at GVSU said that she was in the top 10% of auditions. She was self conscious because she's not a music major - but I don't think most kids in the marching band are.

Busy week this week. We have the robotics banquet Monday and Tuesday is the presentation where her school commemorates the outstanding students.

Gosh - I think I might finally have a Dis kid!

We are in our final three weeks.
DS takes his AP tests starting this week, then it's on to finals.
We went Friday for his tux for prom, my bank account cried a little, I thought boys outfits were supposed to be cheaper than girls, lol.
He had his soccer final dinner this week too, and it set in that high school soccer is over, so he was sad the next morning.
He won't hear from his college until next week, dorm assignment and planning are on hold. He's anxious to get started, I'm just holding onto this year as long as I can. Two more weeks of quiet, thenJune will we a clusterfluff for us, with graduation, prom, theater awards, shore trip, travel soccer wind down, family reunion, last family vacation, etc, I expect to be exhausted by July.
And right on cue, three weeks before he's out of high school, a big scandal is going on at the school, three teachers suing three administrators, including the principal. All I want is for him to get out before the schools name gets sullied. Three more weeks, just three more weeks is all we need of no drama.

We were so happy that the sun actually showed up on DD's prom night :) There were about 35 students for the big photo shot and it wasn't raining, all the parents were doing the happy dance!

She made through the Prom Weekend at the Shore, even though I didn't really sleep the whole weekend. Today was Senior "Cut-Day" and she actually said that she wanted to have the day off - very strange but happy that she's able to rest!

My DD is off to Disney on Friday for a choir competition and she's so excited - it's been 5 years since we were there last and she's really looking forward to the trip with all her good friends.

Her graduation is in exactly ONE MONTH - she'll be a high school graduate at this time next month, time has flown!!!

Last night was the Senior awards ceremony. Lots of tears were shed. Lots of proud moments.

Saw the little boy who had a crush on dd for most of elementary school recieve regonition from the Marines. Still remember when he was so excited that dd would see him in his football uniform (2 or 3rd grade).

Saw another who she has known since jr high recieve recognition for being accepted into West Point and receive a standing ovation.

Saw a girl who she has been best friends with since daycare/preschool recieve a full ride to a university. And another best friend recieve her scholarship for choir at her school of choice.

Lots and lots of scholarships given out.

I kept thinking of that young girl tjat entered high school 4 years ago that always talked about "the smart kids" like she wasn't one of them. And now she is graduating with honors and three scholarships that she has accepted and two other offers. Proud momma!!

Last night was graduation! Sad, happy, emotional, proud are all emotions I felt at the same time!! When they practiced on Wed., dd realized she would walk in with her best friend from Kindergarten (they were friends that year but then the girl moved away and only recently moved back), she was really touched by that. I held it together pretty well until they called her name and she walked across the stage, then as she went down the steps her choir director was standing there. I could tell that she lost it and so did I!!! He gave her a big hug and told her how proud he was.

OK...so here's a question about college. We just got the paperwork about the Residence Hall Linen packages. Have any of you gotten these? And are you using them? They have a couple of patterns that my DD actually likes but I'm not sure about the quality.

My older DS used Residence Hall Linens going into college in 2011. We upgraded the package to a higher thread count sheet, better mattress pad and bed big protectors. The linens were of good quality and lasted him until he graduated in June 2015. I can't say he washed the sheets as often as I would at home, but I know he changed them, because each time I visited he had a different set on the bed.
I can't say what they looked like after four year, because I had him toss them in the trash before he moved home.
Then he used RHL again last summer when he started his DCP. We did not upgrade this time because his program was only four months. Again, he had no complaints and they suited his needs.

My younger DS will probably use RHL this fall when he goes away, just to save space in the car when we move him out there. I have had no regrets using them, they offer some great packages, and some great extras, I.e. Tool kits, 1st aid kits etc

I cannot find a graduation dress to wear under her practically see through white gown.

I cannot find a graduation dress to wear under her practically see through white gown.

We found a light blue and white stripped dress at Macy's that we hope will work for DD.

They don't get their Cap & Gown until the Friday before Graduation (which is the following Wednesday) but they have Baccalaureate on Saturday night which leaves us little time to find something else if the dress doesn't work. :(

That's so pretty. Maybe I'll check out Macy's this weekend.

Help - I need your opinion :)

So DD decided she is going to the prom with her friends after all. So far it is 3 girls (all going single) and 2 guys (going as a couple). She had a nice long black dress that she was going to wear but my Mom decided she wanted to buy her only granddaughter a prom dress so we picked one out last weekend (thank you Macy's for having a bunch to choose from still). It is a very pretty dark peach color (not sure how to describe it).

So my question - I'm assuming the kids all still wear corsages to Prom, right? If so, do those going single still wear them? I was thinking that DH and I would buy DD's corsage so that she has one.
