High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

I have been following this thread for awhile, but have only posted once. Has anyone else already picked out dorms? My daughter is still not sure where she is going, she has been accepted to the state school, still waiting on 3 others that will be a stretch financially and they are all very selective. But who knows? Anyway, she has been telling me she needs to put in her academic deposit to state school in case, I thought it was way too early and kept putting her off. Long story short, we finally put in academic deposit, then had to wait 48 hours to put in housing deposit (mostly nonrefundable, grrr) and the dorms she wanted are already full! I had no idea the room process started this early. I could not find dates anywhere on the site to when the dorm choices started. I have heard Feb 1, but can find no confirmation. It just seems way to early to me. She is very unhappy right now that she may not only end up at the school she did not really want and now in a dorm she did not want. So anyone else finding dorms already full (not all obviously, just the better ones)?

We put in our housing deposit last fall when she was accepted to the 1st of her top 2 choices. She checked last night and the roommate matching process has been going on for about a week-she is holding off on the other school (the financial stretch school) until we hear back about financial aide package- she will likely have to make a decision in next 2 weeks.

Dorm selection at the University my daughter is going to started last month. Everyone interested put in a deposit and received a housing priority number. If you applied for a number you are committed to two semesters of living in a dorm unless you do not go to that University. And yes, there are not enough dorm rooms for the students that want them. It is pretty common actually for big Universities to lack dorm rooms. My daughter wants to live in an off campus apartment so she did not put in for dorm housing.

My DD is really really leaning towards Mines-which has the highest out of state tuition (potentially >$80k). And her second choice has started roommate interviews/choosing so she is a bit stressed "just in case". We are still waiting on FAFSA package -and she wants to talk to grandparents to see if they may help with tuition (my inlaws are quite financially well off and have indicated they may help). Should know on financial aide next month, and final decision soon after. And then the countdown until my firstborn leaves the nest...

Here's hoping for in-laws help. Mines is a fabulous school if you can swing it but $80k is astronomical. I think the most expensive of DD's schools is $65k-ish. Even that is undoable without some serious aid.

We paid the enrollment and housing deposits and stated dorm preferences for DD's #2 school in January. That way, she is assured of getting in the Honors College dorms if she decides to go there. All but $25 of the housing deposit is refundable, but the enrollment deposit is non-refundable. If she doesn't get into her #1 pick with a big financial aid package, then at least she is set at the other school.

Roommate matching is going on now, and DD has one girl set (if they end up at that school). The dorms are 4 person suites, with each student getting their own bedroom, so she will be fine with just about anyone. She has been dealing with dorm living and roommates for almost 2 years already, and she is easy to get along with.

As I mentioned, my son is doing dual enrollment now at the community college. I listed him as a senior, and age wise he is. But I just found out that I can re-list him as a 5th year senior next year and still get free tuition if I want. It will only save about $1,500 as he only takes 9 credits per semester and credits are $80 per credit hour. But it helps!

He is really enjoying it!

My parents haven't yet because I haven't received a letter from my top choice Delaware yet. As soon as I hear from them we will either put a dorm deposit down there or go with my 2nd choice in Penn State. We shall see. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Nothing in the mail today. Lol. Lumpy Dumpity, my DD applied to Delaware too, but she already got accepted to a school she would prefer, so she's not really nervous about that one. In fact, there are really only 4 schools she would prefer at this point and they are 3 low reaches and one super-reach, whose decisions don't come out till mid to late March.

Sounds like your daughter went the same route as ours. While waiting to hear from her final college, she went ahead and accepted at the college which made the best offer, and paid her housing deposit. She's found a potential roommate, and this is the college she will attend.... Unless she gets a major offer from that final college. If that happens, she's only out the non-refundable portion of the deposit.

The dorms at DD's college are fairly standard (two to a room, with communal bathrooms). One feature she and I liked is how the communal bathrooms are set up. Instead of stalls and sinks and showers behind curtains, the rooms are set up in "pods" which each contain a toilet sink and shower behind a locked door. There are about a dozen of these pods, then a couple spare toilets and sinks. She'll still have to walk back and forth to the communal restroom, but she'll have a private space to perform her morning routines.

We sent in DDs housing deposit which is fully refundable. She met a girl on the internet who will be a freshman there too and they signed up to be roommates together. We met her last weekend and she is a real sweetie. Anna will be in the honors housing which is all apartments. There are a few different styles, but the one that they signed up for has two girls with private bedrooms and a shared bathroom, living room and full kitchen. I am trying to figure out what to do about the meal plan. I know she's not going to want to cook - Maybe 10 meals a week and she can have protein bars or something small for breakfast and just have to fix her own meals on weekends. I think she can handle that.

She still has a school she's waiting on, she's deferred. She's thinking of withdrawing her application. Honestly, the financial aid info they need is staggering and I don't know how to do it. I find Idoc too confusing, we don't have a printer or a scanner so I have no clue how to do any of this and I don't think we'll get enough to be able for her to go anyways. A good school, but the school she's already accepted to is known for it's allied health and preprofessional programs so I think she's better off there than at the fancy west coast LAC.

DD's #2 school has just one meal plan- all day, every day unlimited at the several meal halls around campus. They also have "bucks" that they can use at the chain fast food restaurants on campus throughout the year. They require a certain $$ amount deposited each semester, and parents can replenish if they want as the year goes by. It is easy, since there is no choice to make, but I think some kids will "get their money's worth" more than others.

We had to do a lot for IDOC, too, and it was a pain- but at least it was free!! One of the 2 schools asking for all the additional financial information is the one DD isn't very interested in, so it was irritating to fill out all the extra paperwork probably for no reason. We did go ahead and finish, though- we already paid for the application, SAT reporting, and CSS profile, so we figured we should see it through. And, it is a school that DD should get into with no problem, so we would like to see how much FA $$ they are going to offer her.
