High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

What's frustrating is hat you're requitesd to fill it out. They need to just list the magic qualifying amount on their website & then it'll save us all time.

I did run the Net Cost Calculators on these schools, and it looks like we may get some money from some of them....probably not enough though.

My ddd is speech too. She was thinking education, we discouraged that. She was thinking something medical but wasn't sure. As she explored her options, speech and language pathology seemed like the perfect blend of education and medicine. She's super excited. So many option in this field and so much work available.

DDs first thought was elementary education, but family talked her out of that. I personally think she would have been great with the kids but not so great with the parents. She loves little kids and old people but not so much everyone else. Speech therapy is great because she gets to work so closely with both of her favorite groups of folks, money's good, opportunities are good - and I actually have seen it on a list of least stressful occupations.

She also thought medicine for awhile too - but she inherited her father's weak stomach and anything with gore or guts makes her heave. Not a quality you want your doctor to have.

Okay - so DD had applied ED to Pomona - all the way across the country. I didn't like the idea, but it's such a good school and you don't want to hold them back. Well, she got rejected - which was hard for her, but probably a good thing in the long run. She then applied RD at Scripps - part of the Claremont consortium - and forgot about it. In the meantime she chose from her accepted schools here in Michigan and made an excellent decision (Grand Valley - wonderful school for her major). Well, a few days ago she was going through her spam filter and found something from Scripps telling her she was deferred. Crap.

So - at first she thought she would still go to GVSU. It seems her "friend", hereafter known as "the boy" told her she should stay at GVSU so they could hang out. Granted he goes to school four hours from there and "hanging out" means meeting halfway in Chicago and "hanging out" there every now and then, but it still keeps her 2.5 hours from home instead of a plane ride away.

Well now she's changing her mind again. My hair is turning gray so fast! She might still get rejected from Scripps, but she kicked it into high gear this semester and got excellent grades. I wish I knew what was going on.

I feel like we are in the middle of the long, cold winter here. All of the applications are in, Fafsa and CSS are submitted. So now it's a waiting game.
And we are just waiting, and waiting, and waiting.
In the meantime, my boy is having the year of his life. They won the championships in soccer, and he won player of the week that week, with a nice write up in the paper. His track team took the championship for indoor again, and he got a part in the spring musical. He is more involved in school than I ever imagined he would be.
So now I'm afraid being a freshman next year will be a let down after being top of the heap this year.
I just want the letters to start rolling in to shift his focus to the future again, and have him start getting ready for the big changes next year will bring.

ACT scores from the Feb 6 are out (super fast, right?)

My DD scored for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. So happy for her and for the 103/credit we will not be paying!

I totally sympathize with you about the wait- we are in the midst of it, too. It is torturous!

Your DS sounds like he is really enjoying his senior year! I'm sure he will enjoy his first year of college, too- it will be very different, but in a good way, from high school. Once he settles in and finds friends and school activities that interest him, he will love it. My DD has really enjoyed her senior year, as well- they are going through girls' soccer tryouts right now, she made several new friends (big for her, as she is usually a 'one or two friends only' type person) and she has loved doing biochem lab research at our state flagship university as part of her high school's mentoring program.

Awesome!! Congrats on all his achievements this year! I'm sure next year will be great too (exciting in a different way)!

I'm glad that we are past the waiting for the responses part but we are still doing some playing around with our finances before we send in the tuition deposit. I forget that we are only in Feb and aren't required to respond until May 1. But like you, I just want it done and settled. And I know DD is ready to have it finalized.

We had planned on having DD live at home all 4 years but are now seeing if we can get the money together so that she can live on campus the first year (since she will be going to such a small school, they only do dorm housing the first year - after that they need to get off-campus housing. So she will live at home the other years unless she gets a job to pay for an apartment herself). We just have to see if she gets housing, even for the first year, since priority goes to International and then out-of-state students first. But we think it would be good for her to spend more time with her classmates and be right there if she needs additional studio time, etc. So we have our fingers crossed.

Anything new on the college admissions front? We are still waiting. On the bright side, DD is going to a school dance next weekend. She's excited.

We are stuck in a holding pattern. DS expects the next two weeks to bring some answers, and I can tell he's nervous because he's cranky.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping he gets blessed with the acceptance he wants and the financial aid I want.

I finally convinced DD to take her permit test. She flunked. :(

I received two offers and partial scholarships, but I am still waiting to here from my top choice. They should be responding pretty soon.

Our decision has been made (99.9% sure, LOL). We just haven't gotten up the nerve to send in that tuition deposit to her first choice school yet. We will probably do that this weekend.
DD continues to receive information from other schools asking her to apply and the ones that accepted her are sending housing information, etc so it feel like it is still too early to commit.

DD said she feels guilty that she got accepted other places and now has to say no, LOL. I reminded her that this is how the process works and the colleges are only expecting a small percent of the accepted applications to actually enroll, etc.

I hope you hear back soon. The waiting is brutal.

Oh no - did she take an class before trying it? DD took an online course and it helped her a lot. I'm sure she will get it next time :)

DD is scheduled for her behind the wheel test in April and I'm so nervous for her. But I really want her to get her license as soon as possible so that she gets more experience before heading to school in the fall. She was just never interested in driving before (only one of her friends has his license and he waited until he was 18 also). They just aren't in a big hurry to drive, it seems.

No she didn't. I know she downloaded an app, but I'm not sure how much she actually studied. I'm pretty much forcing her into this. She does not want to drive.

My DD is also waiting for her top choices. Good luck to you.

We are just waiting, waiting, waiting... All 4 of her remaining schools are releasing their decisions in the last few days of March. Luckily, DD has her senior trip to AZ to distract her- they left this morning and come back next week. Then she starts her last trimester of senior year! Most of her friends are still waiting to hear from schools, too, so she isn't alone in her anticipation.

Just got the mail-big envelope!

It's not too of her list, but it's a good, solid school-no money but it's in state tuition, which we can handle. DD is pretty happy.
Congrats to her! Love those big envelopes!!

Yay for big envelopes!! Arrgh waiting is hard!
My DD is really really leaning towards Mines-which has the highest out of state tuition (potentially >$80k). And her second choice has started roommate interviews/choosing so she is a bit stressed "just in case". We are still waiting on FAFSA package -and she wants to talk to grandparents to see if they may help with tuition (my inlaws are quite financially well off and have indicated they may help). Should know on financial aide next month, and final decision soon after. And then the countdown until my firstborn leaves the nest...
