High School class of 2011

Okay, I am *really* trying to sit on my hands and keep my mouth shut. I just got home from work at 5pm to find that DD has not packed EVEN ONE shoe or other article of clothing. :headache: We leave tomorrow. i'm trying hard not to say anything because she has busied her little self in the kitchen making a special bourbon salmon & asian salad dinner--and it looks marvelous. But WE LEAVE TOMORROW! i guess she plans to stay up all night packing. :confused3

I'm absolutely positive that this will be my DS also. We leave in 10 days and he'll probably start the night before and that will be after I have a little fit I'm sure. :rotfl2:

I'm off to Walmart to try and get the rest of the stuff on my list.

minkydog: Tomorrow, wow I'm 10 days out and with everyday closer I can feel the emotions building.:sad2: How are you doing? Good Luck tomorrow, sending pixie dust your way!:wizard:

I was doing pretty well until I saw her fixing dinner. :lovestruc and Then it hit me that she won't be here to have dinner with us. DD loves to cook and she's always in the kitchen whipping up something or other. I'm going to miss her a lot.

:sad1: I think I'm gonna need a bigger box of tissues...

Okay, we're getting somewhere now. DD has 4 suitcases, 8 boxes, a comforter, study buddy, broom, microwave and a clean trashcan full of shelf stable foods sitting in the living room.:thumbsup2 DD just asked if she could spend the night at her friend's house. Uh...noooooo....I mean, she *is* 18, she could go off if she wants to, I guess. But she asked if perhaps her two best friends could come spend the night with us, which is fine. My anxiety level is getting pretty high here and I appreciate her making attempts to not make things worse for me.:goodvibes

All I can say is, they *better* have some hunky football players ready to schlep all this stuff up to the 3rd floor tomorrow.

3rd floor is nothing. Kevin and his roommate are on the 12th floor. We decide waiting an hour for the elevator will be just fine.

Thanks for the first aid list Minky. I'm going to print out a few of them for the boys.

Kevin leaves in 10 days. I don't know how I'm going to handle it. Thank God he is only an hour away.

I suggested to DD that we put at least some of her stuff out in our workshop/shed (clean, no dust, very nice). She reacted in utter horror but I was thinking it would be nice to be able to get around in the house... And what's funny is that she actually can't take that much since DD is in a triple (3 girls in a room meant for 2). But we don't feel so bad. I heard the other day that University Of Maryland/College Park is so crowded that people's *desks* will have to be out in the hallways.

Wonder how the fire marshal feels about that.

yeah, I don't know how big her halls are, but DDs residence hall has barely enough room for two people to pass!

I understand that DDs roommate has already moved in, probably is Greek Rush. So at least her stuff will be settled. We'll bring home the suitcases after we empty them. I really hope she isn't bringing tooooo much stuff. she has one whole suitcase filled with nothing but shoes.

Our sons dorm is 11.6 by 14 feet. I just hope their loft beds are delivered on time. We missed the deadline by a few hours. Couldn't be helped since we had no power from the storm.
Its a good thing they are boys I don't know how girls will manage.

Another tip: don't go into their empty bedrooms when you get home from dropping them off if you don't want to cry any more :lmao:. Don't watch Toy Story 3 for at least 6 months from now. :lmao::lmao:

This is our schedule for Move-In Weekend and afterwards...

DD & I drive partway on August 17, finish up on August 18 (getting up at a decent hour, having some time on the road, maybe stay at a B&B on the way)
or
Drive all the way like maniacs on August 18. Arrival must be by 5pm so we can maybe eat at Loveless Cafe for dinner and pick up any items we forgot (getting up at an almost-ungodly hour like 4am, having to drive with very short stops to make it by 5pm) and spend some time as a family.

Oh, DH is flying in to Nashville that evening, he can't spend the time to drive.

Move-In August 19th early afternoon - we got a VERY specific timeslot along with instructions:
Do NOT show up early.
Label all your boxes and stuff with these labels, volunteers will be helping get your student's items to their room.
Really, do NOT show up early. (They repeated it several times in the instructions.)
DD's two roommates also got Friday for early Move-In (350 or so students got Friday, the other 1200 show up Saturday) so starting Friday she'll hang out with them and be living in the dorm. At least the school opens the cafeteria early too so she can start eating her way through that "platinum" Dining Plan.

Saturday - mostly up in the air, DH & I will probably be avoiding the campus during much of the day, since the bulk of students arrive starting at 7AM in the morning. There is a Freshmen & Parents' dinner/reception in evening plus concert.

Sunday - Matriculation Ceremony, Brunch and
Be Gone By 2:00 (we're leaving before 1:30 & won't get home until midnight or later) *because*

DH has to fly out Monday for business early afternoon, I'll be here by myself until

Thursday when I go to pick up my almost 90-year old mother, drive to my DSis' house and then on Friday (DH gets home later the same day I leave) DSis drive my Mom & I to the airport and my mom & I fly out to

the family lake-cabin in the upper midwest.

I'll fly back to our area on September 1st, having gotten my parking voucher from my DSis in the Minneapolis airport. (DSis lives in the same area I do, is traveling to the cabin that same day so my mom won't be by herself too long *and* will drive my car I left at her house to the airport so I can get back to my house).

I'll make sure to avoid DD's room especially when I am here by myself those first few days.

agnes!

Okay, off we go! We have 11 of DDs closest and bestest friends here to see her off, including her ex-boyfriend. :goodvibes It's sweet that they want to show her off like this. I bet *she'll* be crying before I will.

Good luck--looks like you're the first to go! Great list, will definitely be printing that out.

We leave Friday, it's a 7-hour drive. Our "suggested" time for move-in Saturday is 8am and I'm hoping that most people will follow the suggested times. He's on the 10th floor, so no chance I'm taking the stairs. My husband claimed he would take the stairs, but sprained his ankle playing soccer on vacation, so that's not happening now. I'm really dreading the heat. I'm thinking I'll unpack the fan first.

Tomorrow we'll celebrate his 18th birthday since my daughter is going to her grandparents' for the weekend Thursday morning.

Looks like you're the first of our group....my eyes are actually tearing up thinking about next week with my DD.
Hope it all goes smoothly for you and your dd!

Full report please on your move in day. Write a full "trip report" with lots and lots of details!

Drive safely and give us a report! You are a whole week ahead of us. I don't see how everything piled in my dinning room is gonna fit in his dorm room!

We can do this! All of us are well prepared. I am so glad I have each of you to talk to after DS is moved in to school! I know DH won't understand my emotions.

I agree with every word!
Drive Safe!
Give full Report!
Stuff piled up not gonna fit.....and she hasn't even packed the clothes yet!
Glad to have people to talk to !
DH won't want to chat/discuss/analyse the whole thing the way I will

Okay, I am having serious anxiety! We leave in 48 hours and DS has not finished his summer reading, he has not written his 4 page paper, he has not gone to Wal-Mart to pick up his final items, he has not packed one stitch of clothing and he is too old for me to ground him from his new laptop and make him get his work done, but GAH!!!

I am just not going to make it this weekend. :faint:

I am a nervous wreck, I am totally PMSing and I am about to lose it. I just have to breathe…

And I surely cannot even think about Toy Story 3. I was bawling in the theater last year it was embarrassing!

Who else is leaving this week? Surely not just Minkydog and I…

Hi everyone!

Well, my son leaves for college on the 17th. I am pretty much ok, but I am a little concerned with the fact that everyone else moves in on the 20th. He has to be there early because he is on the cross country team and they are leaving the morning of the 18th for a camp. He will be one of very few kids on campus early, plus he won't be around when everyone else moves in on the 20th. I feel bad that he will miss everyone else arriving, and he won't even get to meet his roommate until the 21st. He is also going to miss some of the welcome parties on the 20th.

It drives me crazy that his coach planned this camp for the first few days on campus. I understand that the season starts immediately, but I really wish he was going to have time to get settled first. :sad1:

In any case, good luck to all your students! Hope everyone has a great year! :)

Most college fall sports around here start 2+ weeks before classes start so it's pretty common to go up early. At my college the freshman had an upperclassman assigned to be their mentor and that mentor stayed in the freshman's room with them during those two weeks so they were not alone in the dorm. Many schools have dorm floors for each team and while they may not have a roommate from their sport, there are kids from their team on the floor. I went up early because I was the athletic trainer (went a couple days before the athletes did to get the training room set up even). THey were usually two of the best weeks on campus :banana:

My ds went on Sunday. He is attending a 4 day intense chem class, he'll be home tomorrow night, and then head back Sunday for the start of marching band camp. We live about 3 hours from his school, so the quick trip home is doable and he won't have time once classes start and he has Saturday games.

Move in was pretty easy especially since he is on the 1st floor and only students attending the camp were checking in. His room is TINY, but we got everything to fit. I had packed some plastic storage drawers with his towels, dishes, school supplies, movies & games, etc. We carried them in, found a place in the room for them, and he had nothing to unpack.

We met his roommate and parents and went out to dinner with them. They seem very nice.

I did cry, but not until after I left him. DD is a senior this year, so we'll get to go through it all again.

We're leaving Friday, too. I'm actually way more stressed out about his endocrinologist appointment tomorrow than move-in. It's a new doctor and I'm sending him in there by himself for the first time. I don't really think he's ready for that and I'm stressing his doctor will not think I've prepared him well. It's kind of like getting a report card as a child--you hand over your numbers and there's this long silence while the doctor looks them over and then you talk about about the "bad" ones and where you went wrong, etc. I hate it, but he doesn't have as much of an understanding as I do about the ins and outs and why the numbers are the way they are and how to fix the problems. I've spent the last 14 years getting him ready for this and I just hope that he is.
