High School class of 2011

I would let him move in and see how it goes. My sophomore year, the freshman next to us had a senior for a roommate. They weren't best friends, but they got along fine. You tend to hang out with everyone in your area, not just your roommate. If he's the third in the triple, he may be moved out soon anyway. When we were on the elevator, two of the Resident Advisors were talking about a student who had moved in that morning and was already moving out.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Hopefully it will be ok and if not I guess there will be some sort of process to switch rooms.

The student moved in and out the same day?! Oh my!!! If I had bought all the stuff and carted it all up to the school I would be a very unhappy mama about moving it all back home. And I am missing DS already and he is still on the couch across from me!

Kbeverina, hat's off to you for being able to let go. My DDs best friend has diabetes too and her mother is really struggling with letting her go off 1-1/2 hours from home. Her DD is pretty savvy about her illness. Still...

Thank you--I feel like I've spent 14 years telling myself I need to be sure he's ready to go off and live on his own, that I've taken care of him and kept him healthy and, most importantly, taught him how to take care of himself. And now that time is here and I can't believe it.

Kbeverina, your hubby is a meanie! Lol..

I know! He's brutal. He was also teasing me about checking for bubbles. When I have a text or call on my cell phone it will say on the screen that I have a new "bubble" because the message shows up in these bubbles. And yes, I was checking my phone to see if I had any new bubbles. A lot.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Hopefully it will be ok and if not I guess there will be some sort of process to switch rooms.

We were shocked--and apparently this was not the only student because it was the discussion of another student that brought this one up. It was hard to hear because they were mostly whispering, but we were in the elevator, so the acoustics were good for eavesdropping.

My son was really not crazy about his dorm assignment at first. It's supposedly the worst dorm to get. It's practically off-campus. It's not suite style. Those rooms are pretty small. But we told him that it won't matter--he'll meet the people he was meant to meet and they will be his closest friends and he'll be glad he lived there. Hopefully, that will be the case for your son, too. When I was at Tech, the older, savvier students would sign up for the triples because they knew the third would soon be moved out and then they'd have the big room. Maybe that's the case here.

 Chaos has ensued here!

Summer is winding down and all of DD's high school girls are leaving for their respective colleges. We hosted a "stay up all night" er.... sleepover here last Tuesday and they are leaving one by one. :sad2: We have pitched this idea before with no bites but I tried once more and now.... DD is moving on campus. We haven't bought a thing and have only until the 28th to get all her stuff in order. She is excited but also has the deer in the headlights look. It's going to be a huge change for all of us but especially her and me. We found linen for her last night but that is all we have done so far. I will be scrolling back on this thread to see what you guys all sent to school. DD will only be 20 minutes from here so I can bring her anything she needs.

kbeverina and HannaBelle - thank you so much for the reports :thumbsup2 and how are you all holding up.

We move DS in on Thursday. I can't believe it's here. I'm so excited for him, but I feel myself starting to be in panic mode on the inside. I'm trying to hold it together on the outside. One last minute thing we bought today was a rain jacket, DS said he wouldn't use an umbrella, but he would wear a rain jacket.

Don't worry you will find everything you need. Bed Bath and Beyond and Target are the stores I have bought the most from. BBB has a list posted to give you an idea and there was also a list of bring/don't bring on DS college web site. She will need bedding (probably extra long twin size) and bathroom stuff. I got several different kinds of plastic containers hoping some will fit under the bed for storage. A lock box and a lockable trunk to store things. A lamp for the desk and a clip on lamp for his bed. A fan, a little book shelf and also a desk hutch to sit on top of the desk for storage. I figure we will take it all and then return what doesn't work of fit.

It's been great to read all the experiences. My daughter goes one week from today, and I'm trying not to think about it. My son will go back around the same time. It is going to get awfully quiet around here.

Our move-in experience will be so different, since she is going to be only 1-1/2 hours away. We'll do it all in one day, and it won't have the trip feel to it. She moves in on Wednesday, and I know that there are some activities for parents on Thursday, but I don't think we'll go back up.

I'm working on being tough on the outside. ;)

Tomorrow is the big move in for DD. I've been envisioning today as the big packing get it all ready day....but it's pretty much all done. Some last minute stuff will need to be packed up tomorrow morning but the only thing I guess she needs to do today is get her car vacuumed out.

I have to take my son for schedule pickup/orientation for 10th grade tomorrow morning from 9-11am then we'll come home, have lunch and on the road by noon. DD will only be 1 1/2 hours away and her move in time is not until 3pm. So we'll head down, pick up her books from the bookstore and then move her in. We'll have to take her to dinner too as the cafeteria doesn't open until Friday morning. But I'm looking forward to that dinner. We're hoping that perhaps the roomies and parents might come along too and we can all get to know each other a bit. We'll see how that works out.

Ok, so I just went through the 3 care package threads that I bumped up and came up with the following ideas for care packages throughout the year for DD.

We got her mailing address yesterday and she moves in tomorrow so I'm going to send her a card with 1 or 2 small items today.

Care Package Ideas

Chapstick
Gum
Nail Polish
Gift Cards (Subway, Taco Bell, Chick Fil A, Itunes, bookstore, movies)
Hair rubber bands
Post it notes
$ store trinkets

face mask
vicks
blow pops
glow necklaces
air fresheners
sharpies
oriental trading
temporary tattoos
erasers
face paint
dry erase markers
nerf balls
holiday themed decorations

My DD is off at "Jack Camp" this week. (it's a fun orientation which is pretty much about meeting people and having fun). Apparently she is having fun because she texted me and said she met a beautiful boy who is perfect for her since he's a baseball player and she LOVES baseball and baseball players! Lol!

We are moving my oldest back to Austin on Saturday and then next Saturday (27th) we are moving youngest DD into her dorm at Stephen F Austin.

The weekend after that...I don't think I'm going to leave my house!!

We move DS in tomorrow too. DS campus is also 1 hr. and 15 minutes away. We are going to take DD's to school in the morning and then leave. Move-in starts at 10:30, we are going to stop at Cracker Barrell on the way for breakfast. (DS favorite). After move-in we will go to lunch and have a WalMart run. There is a President's Picnic at 6pm. and then I still can't decide if we will come home and go back or spend the night. We have orientation on Friday and matriculation that night.

Tomorrow is our big day too. Today we will finish packing and do laundry. DS is only about 30 min away so we will take him and help him move in, then there is a dinner (I think parents are supposed to stay :confused3) then we will leave. There is some kind of event Thursday night but I don't think the parents are supposed to stay for that - even if we could stay I have my own open house tomorrow night at my school. I don't know if that will be good or not! ;)

Then I will go back on Friday for the parent meetings. I think they are from 9 - 3. How much can they have to tell us? The kids have all kinds of things to do over the 4 days. I think it will be fun and I think DS will be way too tired to miss us!

Both DS and DD start school on Monday and thank the Lord I don't have kids in my classroom until Tuesday! I am so going to need Monday to get ready for my own classroom!

DD & I stayed up too late (as in 4am) but the car is (almost) all packed. Sheesh, I had no idea that she was taking this much stuff! Actually, maybe the problem is that we're driving the Prius...but maybe that's good since we don't have bottomless pit for a car.

Today DD & I are going to drive about 6 1/2 hours from here to almost the Tennessee/Virginia border, then tomorrow we'll probably only have about 5 to go. DH is flying down tomorrow night and Move-In Day is Friday at 2:30 for DD. We are staying at (and getting a phenomenal rate!) at the Renaissance hotel downtown and will be driving straight home (without DD! Eeek!) starting out before 1pm Sunday afternoon.

I'll miss her so. But it's got to be done.

agnes!

Thanks for the reply... I have already bought two different sets of linens and the first is going back because the colors didn't match any of the accessories out this year for college kids. The girls are a lot pickier than the boys I bet. She has settled on a very sophisticated leaf pattern with a gray, black and red color scheme and we have been very fortunate to find lots of stuff at Meijer and Target. BB&B doesn't seem to have much red stuff in this year. We have purchased 2 storage ottomans, a bookcase and a media stand that match and can float out from the wall back to back. She wants a small futon and a bedside table and that should be it for the big items. Whew! Now if I can get her to focus on her study supplies and toiletries etc.. She moves in on Sunday the 28th and leaves at noon for a two night retreat with 30 incoming freshmen so she will have to be packed and ready for that. When they return on Tuesday they immediately start a 4 day freshmen orientation with social events. It's going to take lots of organization to make this all happen smoothly. Where did you get the desk hutch?

They didn't have "Jack Camp" when I went there. Sounds like fun though and much needed. Because the housing was spread on either side of the main part of campus, it was hard to meet anyone that lived on the other side. I really didn't make friends there until I joined a sorority, but then again I roomed with a girl from my high school that left after one semester. She never left the room except to go to class. :sad2: How many students are there now? Is your DD going to Rush?

Good ideas. I just sent off a small care package to DD18--she has already drunk up all her Earl Grey tea. I sent her a box of tea, a Starbucks gc, some sunscreen, small hand sanitizer and a little teddy bear shaped soap.:goodvibes

I'm collecting little things to send later. I found some small trial size bottles of Stress Relief shampoo & conditioner at Bath & Body Works. I figure she'll need that before finals. I'll send her Teen Vogue magazine when it comes in. Face Paint is a great idea! Football starts next week.

DD sent me a text last night: "OMG. My roommate's mom just bought us 2 boxes of Ritz, 2 boxes of Oreos, 2 boxes of cookies, a bulk box of chips, a box of Ramen, popcorn and a huge container of Mike & Ikes." Her next text says they're considering selling off some of it for a profit. I guess I need to step up my game.

 Yeah, I think that's your problem. DD drives a Jeep Wrangler. She got about 2 things packed in there and it was FULL. Thank goodness we have a big honkin' Ford Expedition, or we would have had to rent a UHaul. That Expy gets crappy gas mileage, but it carried every bit of her stuff :thumbsup2

LOL!

OK, I bought a card (It says "Your place, your space, what could be better?") and I decided instead of sending a "package" this time, I'll just send the card and a $5 bill. I'm mailing it tomorrow, so she'll have it Friday, the day after we leave, I'm thinking too soon for care packages but never too soon for a little card and cash.

I don't think she's going to Rush, but you never know. She made a couple friends at regular orientation in June and has emailed her roommate back and forth a few times and said she seems nice. I just googled enrollment and it says there are 12000 students.

Here's what the website says about Jack Camp. I think it sounds way fun!

What is Jack Camp?
Jack Camp welcomes incoming students to SFA each year by giving them an opportunity to meet fellow students, have fun, and learn about life at SFA. It is our hope that through Jack Camp, you will find your place in our Lumberjack Family. Jack Camp has activities for everyone, including: tribal games, family groups, camp times, and mixers.

Jack Camp is a four-day extended orientation program that takes place at Camp Olympia in Trinity, Texas. Students will arrive at Camp Olympia to find some of the best camp facilities in the state of Texas including: air-conditioned cabins, on site cafeteria, pool, athletic fields, and more. In addition Jack Camp is led by some of the most successful student leaders at SFA, who are passionate about making each incoming student feel welcome and to help prepare them to be as successful as possible when they get back to Nacogdoches.

What do you do at Jack Camp?
At camp everyone is split into two tribes consisting of around 150 new students and 25 upperclassmen counselors. These tribes will compete throughout the camp in activities such as cheers, tribal games, skits, and more. Each tribe will also be split into "family groups" of around 10 - 15 students and 2 counselors. Within these groups, students will have an opportunity to share fun experiences with their peers and really get to know other students on a close level. They will also have opportunities to engage in small group discussions about life at SFA, what to expect as a new student, some fears students might have their first year, as well as many other questions incoming students may have.

In addition, Jack Camp also features evening mixer activities, plenty of free time at the pool, and opportunities for you to just enjoy your surroundings with some of your new friends.

That sounds like a lot of furniture. Are you sure it will all fit?

DD has a single but it is a normal sized room 12 X 15 with only half the furniture. Lucky duck has 2 closets. :cloud9: I think it should all fit.

That sounds awesome! :thumbsup2 Camp Olympia sounds like a great place for a family reunion or something. College sure has changed in the last 30 years. I don't remember one single freshman orientation event or mixer from my SFASU days.
