American Thrillmakers: Walt Disney World

Discovery HD Theater
March 30, 2005 12:00 PM EST

I saw this during off-season last year and it was pretty cool. The Mission: Space footage in Hi Def was great. It was obvious that Disney is trying to market their attractions as crazy "thrill rides" in order to compete with places like Islands of Adventure and Six Flags. They even have a psychologist telling us why some of Disney's rides are so "thrilling." I kind of think that is a load of marketing dung though.

There is nothing really wild about Disney rides IMHO...everything is dumbed down to their family formula which I don't mind at all. I think the wildest ride at Disney, by far, is the Rock n Roller Coaster. To tell you the truth, it shocked the hell out of me when I rode it in 2001.

The only thing that dissapoints me about this whole charade of trying to create wild rides in order to compete with other parks is that it makes for some pretty shotty attractions. I really can't stand the vibe given off by Test Track...I think it's awful sitting there in the back of Future world making all that roller coaster type racket. I much preffered the days of World of Motion. I preferred the quiet glimpse at where we were and where we are going to that of a go around at what we all experience every day in our own cars. Don't get me wrong, it is a well done attraction, but I think it really throws off what originally made EPCOT such an inspirational place. That's exactly why the place has gone down hill and why Project Gemini was started. Re-vitalization was desperately needed but I don't think they've gone in the right direction.

Attractions like Horizons and World of Motion are exactly what Disney is missing at EPCOT. They've abandoned the visionary dark rides such as Horizons and that annoys me. The original idea of EPCOT was to promote forward thinking that pushed the bounds of our imagination and creative spirit.

The idea of putting a roller coaster inside of Spaceship Earth makes me sick.

Just my .02 cents.

They're gonna put a roller coaster ride inside Spaceship Earth? I loved that ride for years! They're gonna go too far & a lot of people are gonna get pissed if they do that.
