We went last summer when our daughter was 4, and we truly enjoyed it. As
cgcw said, it's a time to kick back and relax. No, it's not an
every moment planned trip like WDW, but that's part of its appeal--you really feel as if you're on vacation. Naturally, there is the beach which is approx. 1.5 miles away from the main Disney HHI resort, but the bike/walking/running path is paved as mentioned, and it crosses
under the busy thoroughfare that is the main drag into HH. You can also drive to the beach or take a free shuttle from the resort itself. We drove and it's all of 5 minutes from door to beach.
At the beach, you'll find a separate Disney complex which is their version of a huge beach house. The Disney beach house has its own pool, a grill/snack bar, an activities room, a game room, and a pool bar. It also has shower facilities and towels you can use on the beach. They don't rent beach chairs or umbrellas, but the lifeguards on the beach do, though I think they run something like $20-$25 a day. We didn't rent any, preferring to head back to the beach house after an hour or two on the sand for a burger and the pool.
Back at the main resort, there is a large pool with a slide, a hot tub, an activities center, and a mercantile among other things. When you check in, you'll get a listing of all the activities going on that week--some are free and some require a modest fee. You can fish from the pier, go crabbing, go kayaking, do crafts, paint, and a whole lot more. Most nights, there is a bonfire with singing and sumores which the kids love. And if you want, there are a couple of playground areas with slides, swings, etc.
You can cook in your room or you can go out to eat. There are lots of great places to dine in HH, and you get a listing of many of them when you check in. Or just ask the CMs who will tell you the best places. So, yes there is plenty to do. . .just don't expect the WDW fever pitch of excitement. It's the low country beach with just a touch of Disney magic.
