Who has done the 4-hour deep-sea fishing excursion through the HHI resort? We want to do a fishing excursion while in HHI next month. I was just wondering if the one offered through the resort is a good one.

I've been out on charter fishing boats embarking from Palmetto Bay and Shelter Cove marina's.

True deep sea fishing is out in the gulf stream and that's about 40 miles offshore.
A 4hr excursion will not get you to the gulf with enough time to fish.
Local deeper hole or reef fishing can be found inside 20 miles and you'll find reds, shark etc.
Shop the charter services at the marina and ask the capt's what they caught over the last few days and then decide if that's what you want on the end of your line.

We were there 5/27 thru 6/4. We did not do the fishing excursion through the resort, but we did go fishing. We went on the Gullah Girl and has a great time.We saw several dophin and caught 10 sharks and a sting ray. We did a 3 hour excursion and it went our of Shelter Cove so it was very convenient. The kids had a great time.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

My son-in-law and I have been doing the inland fishing charter from the resort for years now. It has been offered by Low Country Nature Tours and it usually stays within Calibogue Sound. We typically start by netting poagies for bait and then find a likely spot in the sound. We've caught RedFish, Spanish Mackerel, Rays, Jacque, Cobia and a variety of sharks including black tip and bonnet heads - usually in the 2-4 foot range. We've also seen dolphin on each trip. They often come right up the boat (feeding them is not allowed though).

Capt. Scott was our guide last year.

As Chum noted there are several other charters that leave right from Shelter Cove right near the resort. The 4 hour deep sea charter won't really get you much fishing time since it will take 30 - 45 minutes just to get out to the ocean. I'd suggest one of the smaller boats (like Low Country Nature Tours, Catmando or Gullah Gal)- they offer a more private experience, but there is also a group charter on the Capt. Hook and also a group crabbing charter on the Crabber J II.

Wow! These pictures have gotten my kids VERY excited!
Did you catch these fish on the fishing excursion offered through the resort? How long was the excursion? When I called the resort, they said they had a 4-hour excursion for $450 and a 6-hour for $650. I get motion sick  , so I'm afraid to try the 6 hour, but if it means catching fish like these, I might have to tough it out for my kids. :scared1:

Great pics Doc!
That is a great visual summary of what a 1/2 day of fishing can bring.
The nice perk of being on the water during a Hilton Head vacation is the dolphin show a keen interest in the local boats and people on them.
They swim right up and check you out. They make eye contact! Any visit to the island should include a boat tour just to see the dolphin. Kids are amazed at this not to mention the adults.

Tip: The smaller the boat you are on the closer you get to the dolphin.

The local waters are typically calm unless there's a storm. Fishing the creeks or May river is very flat. The further from shore the larger the seas can be.

Our charters have all been the 4 hour trip thru the resort. I also have to be careful about motion sickness and have never had a problem with it on this charter. We always stay in the sound and never get out into the open ocean. I think the 6 hour (we've never done that one) is the one that does go out into the ocean, but not true deep-sea fishing where they would go out to the gulf stream.

All of those fish in the photos were caught where Broad Creek marsh joins Calibouge sound (the sound is the intracoastal waterway). The Dolphin photos were taken in that same area. This is the same company that also offers the Dolphin Cruise also thru the resort.

As Chum noted, the smaller the boat, the closer you'll be to the Dolphin. :) HH has about 300 "resident" Dolphin who are there year round and many more migrate thru over the summer months. They will even come right up to the resort to feed as the tide changes in the marsh.

It is a lot of fun and the charter guys are all great.

Thanks to both of you, chum and WebmasterDoc! You've eased by mind and given me some great tips. I'm so looking forward to this trip!!! :cool1:
