Sure, there is always a chance that something will open up for you over the coming months. The HH dynamics are just as active during the summer months as the WDW DVC resorts are during early Dec and Spring Break times.
Keep in mind that there are only 21 Studios (and 21 1BRs) so that does affect the availability during busy times but anything is possible.
I just tried booking a cash ressie on the Disney website and the days that we were wait listed for were available. Although I did not book it because the rate for three nights was $1200.00, why would that unit be available at all? Do they have a separate unit inventories for cash bookings and DVC stays?
Yes, there are different inventories for those bookings. But try calling member services and have them check cash availability for the dates you are looking for. They may have it at a discount rate. You can still keep your waitlist.

Yes, that usually menas that a HH owner has used their points for a non-DVC trip (Disney cruise, non-DVC resort at WDW, Concierge Collection, etc.). Points used in that fashion are used to make reservations and moved from "Member Inventory" to "Cash Inventory". They can no longer be used for point resrvations. Also, any points owned by the Developer (DVD) may be used for cash inventory (as well as replacement inventory for maintenance/rehab issues).
Last weekend, I was able to book 3 nights in a studio at a cash rate of $277. per night 7/10 - 7/13, 7/9 was available on points. This was by calling DVC MS, not using CRO. I then waitlisted 7/10 - 7/11, but not 7/12 since the point cost is pretty significant. While I hope our watilist does come through, I am comfortable with that price and am guaranteed a room at this point. I had MS check other dates and they had cash rates available, too. I was actually shocked at how much was available on cash.
