HH in one day

On our way back from WDW in November we are stopping for one night at HH. We'll probably get there before lunch so we have most of the day and the evening. Will we be able to tell if we like the resort from this short short stay? Do you suggest anything to do, anyplace to eat for our one-nighter? Appreciate your thoughts.

I think you certainly will be able to know whether you like it after one day. I would walk around the entire resort. Maybe rent bikes for the day and ride over to the beach house and around the surrounding area a bit. Can't really recommend any restaurant. We have only gone to the Kingfisher, which is right next to the resort. It was fine and very good service, but I can't compare it to any of the others that I read that other people rave about.

We check in at night and left about noon after a morning swim. So we really had very little time to see what the resort had to offer. But the quality of the units was outstanding, and it looks like a nice place to relax.

Be sure to research your restaurants and their location before arriving. No Internet, and no map from the front desk, either.

I loved HHI resort from the moment I stepped foot in my room. I have only stayed once and can't wait to go back.
Disney is in the process of having free wi-fi for members in all units. Maybe it will be up and running when you get there (supposed to be done by Jan. 1, 2009). Currently it is available near the resort pool and the check-in area.
A one day bike rental is not a very good deal. I don't remember the exact cost for one day but it is WAY more than the comparative cost of a length of stay bike rental, which is only $25. My niece was going to do a 1 day rental and decided against it.
There are lots of good restaurants in the area, but if you are only there for one night I would eat at Scott's or San Miguel, which are both in the Shelter Cove marina area right next to HHI resort (just walk over a very short bridge). Better to spend time at/near the resort for such a short stay.

What type of dining experience do you think you will want?

We have visited HH often and have tried a lot of the restaurants, from extremely casual to more pricey. To be truthful, we don't think that the ones closest to the resort aren't the best in any category.

If you're only in HH for one day and only have one dinner, it should be at one of the best places, no matter what type of dining you want.

My choices: for very casual, I would go with the Sea Shack or the Grumpy Grouper. For more intermediate, I would try Old Oyster Factory or Hudson's. For a higher-end dinner, Alexanders, Red Fish, or Old Fort Pub.

There are literally hundreds of restaurants on HHI. At the time of year you are going, some may be closed for the season, but I think you should have no problem getting in at most places.

Oh, and since you will have a breakfast there, too, try Signes! A lot of people like the French toast, but I think the fritatta is to die for!

We stayed at Hilton Head for one night on our drive home from the DVC Member Cruise last year. We really only had the afternoon as we left very early the next evening. We walked around the resort and also drove over to the beach house. We ate at Kingfisher and enjoyed it. It definitely gave us a good feel of the resort and I can see us going back for a longer stay at some point.

I'll second the Sea Shack. It's definitely not fancy, but the seafood is good and fresh and the prices are the most reasonable on the island. We enjoyed just spending time at the resort, we had a marsh view last May and I loved just sitting on one of the rocking chairs on the porch. You should be able to get a good feel for the resort even over such a short stay. It is so peaceful, such a different feel from WDW. It will be nice and quiet in November.

How much is the bike rental?

Yikes.... caught me off guard with that one... I don't know. We rented two bikes for a week last year for $50.

Is there ample parking at the beach house?

I think it really depends on the time of year. Last June we found the beach house parking pretty much full. So we just rode our bikes over there after that.

We have stopped at HHI many times for one night on our return to Boston from WDW. (along with many vacation weeks!)The resort just is so relaxing and welcoming. We have stopped and gotten food and cooked for the evening meal and then gone out for breakfast in the morning on the way home(Love Hilton Head Diner open 24/7). We love just walking the beach or shopping at shelter cove(right across from the resort). If you want dinner out, there are many options, we love Old Oyster Factory, Franki Bones; Kingfisher was good also and its right there next to the resort. There are also many places that deliver to the resort..we did this last summer and got really good ribs and bbq chicken, but can't remember the name(there is a huge dining guide you can pick up for the island). We love playing pool in the main lodge or playing checkers/board game. take a walk to end of the pier and watch for wild life..lots to fit into one day..

Is there ample parking at the beach house?

There was when we were there but it was October and kind of an overcast and rainy day. I think if I was staying there at a more popular time I'd take the shuttle over. I'd rather the sand get in that then in my car.
