I was thinking about going to Hilton Head in late January but wanted to ask you guys that have gone about the same time how the crowds were and if the weather was prohibative (i.e. too cold to do anything outside?). Thanks!

It can be a little hit and miss at that time of year. Indeed ANYTIME from November to March you can get a cold snap. There isn't any real way to judge if you'll be lucky or not. If you get winds from the south, it's nice and warm ( 70s) If they come from the north it can be close to freezing.

We were at HH for about 2 weeks over Xmas and New Year. We had 4 days in the mid 70s (max) and spent time lazing about the pool (which is heated anyway) and lounging in the sun. We had 4 days that were in the (max) 60s ( but still fine), we swam in the pool and sat in the hottub (but didn't sunbathe), we walked along the beach (in joggers and fleeces) , played golf, did nature trips etc and we had 4 days that were decidedly chilly ( but still clear) in the high 50s (max) we shopped, did a short walk on the beach ( I was OK, DF's teeth were chattering ;) LOL) did a few nature things ( well wrapped in fleeces etc) .

While it was chilly at times the weather was still clear and fine other than a little cold, so it didn't really have too much effect on our plans. We did go to the outlet mall and buy a couple of (cheap) thick fleeces each to help keep warm.

On average late January is as cold as it gets. I would not expect to see anything > 60. Average January temp is 48. I would figure +/- 10 for high/low. Check out hiltonhead.com

We went the third week of February, and I'd be surprised if it ever reached 48 degrees then. However, one year we went the very beginning of March and it was in the 70's every day and only rained a little on the first day. The week after we left, I heard it rained all week. So who knows! But what's nice if the weather is cold is the daily hot cider and cookies in Big Murgie's Den. Makes going then worthwhile. As long as it doesn't rain, I think you'll be able to go outside. But don't take that Dolphin Cruise then-it gets really COLD out there on the water!

We went in Jan. 2003 for two nights (on our way back home after a Wonder cruise) and it was cold and drizzly and grey. But, 3 of my kids swam in the very heated pool (they were the only ones). We walked to the beach house and looked around and sat in the beach house room and met another family while my kids played checkers and colored and watched t.v. The snack bar opened and we got a little snack. My oldest enjoyed the weight room. We went to the campfire and had smores (we were a little late, however). It was definitely not crowded. We brought take out food for dinner. We did the treasurue hunt game that I found on another DVC'ers website, but someone had stolen the entire treasure, so we were a little disappointed.

There are activites planned, but we were only there two nights, so we didn't really do much. It was the end of January, like you are planning. The weather wasn't the greatest, but luckily it wasn't raining non stop. It was cold. But you never know what the weather will be like, no matter when you go.

Hi! We have been for 5 days in January. The first 2 days the temp was around 70 and we spent the day lounging by the pool and had a blast. The resort was not crowded at all, but that's how we like it. The last 3 days the temp started to drop and I think by the time we left the highs were in the lower 50's. Didn't stop us from going on the beach, just bundled up. All in all it's a luck of the draw kind of thing. Hopefully if you go you will have some nice weather.
