Hey, Has Anybody Noticed That Taylor Swift Can't Sing?

this brings up an interesting point - who can really sing well vs. who can do a great performance or studio cut. DH and I have been watching the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniv. concert on HBO and most of the people have been performing since the 60's/70's. A few stood out for their abilities to still sing well and sound like they did years ago. Many have lost much of their range but have great showmanship (Billy Joel).

so 30 years from now, who will have stood the test of time???

IMO- I don't care if she can't sing.

She is adorable, sweet, wholesome, humble, kind, grateful, etc. Basically, a good role model for kids in today's world (I mean wouldn't you rather have your kid looking up to Taylor Swift instead of Britney, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus?).

I've seen her in concert and thought she put on a GREAT show. She does have a presence and people simply love her. In addition, her songs are downright catchy!

There are a lot of "artists" that I feel can't sing but sometimes personality makes up for it.

I totally agree! And I thought I was the only person who noticed what a weak voice she has. But I LOVE the fact that she seems like such a sweet, normal girl with good values, and that so many young girls look up to her and love her. Her music has the right message for our daughters, that it's OK to not be the popular one, to be your own person, and that you are not alone in this world. I'd rather my daughter listen to her than Lady Ga Ga any day!

So she's your average teenager that has great stage presense and is quite the role model for young girls. What's so wrong with that?? She's very talented and I'm glad that my girls chose her to look up to and not someone like Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus. She's by no means terrible. I bet most people wouldn't be able to do what she does. What she stands for etc is what's important - not that she doesn't hit every single note in a perfectly harmonious key.

That love story video was from over a year ago. As a teen singer, I think she's drastically improved since then.

Oh. I thought this was a recent performance. Thank God, because that was awful. I was thinking they did this on a recent award show.:lmao:

There had to be something wrong with her earpiece or something. Otherwise, why wouldn't she just do what Beyonce, Brittney and all the rest do; lip sync?

I haven't seen her but going by the reactions of everyone I know that saw her in Biloxi last year; she must be a great performer. I mean, I have seen some really big country music stars (Alan Jackson, Clint Black) would not pay a dime to see them again. I can watch them stand there and sing on TV. From what the many of the moms that went with the kids last year said, she puts on a huge show.

She is a great person for young girls to have to look up to and I just hope she keeps up her squeaky clean image.

Because lip syncing loses a lot of fans as well.
I'm just happy my favorite group can sing (Backstreet Boys), they might not sound perfect sometimes, but the majority of the time they sound beautiful live.

if you have 90 minutes, this is a great film about the state of the music industry.

http://www.hulu.com/watch/62945/before-the-music-dies (there are a few commercials but worth it to watch the whole thing, heck just listen to it.)

I'll take Neil, Bob and some CSNY any day of the week over what is being put on the radio today.

Thanks! :)

and me too! Music today isn't about talent. It's about looks. Thankfully, there are a couple with both: Joss Stone.

If you like female vocalist.. I've really been enjoying Lisa Hannigan, who sang with Damien Rice forever. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful, and I love that when she sings, you can still here the Irish in her voice. It's not celtic, though. She does solo work now. YouTube her. :)

My favorite music comes from ugly singers. I think I'll go listen to Steely Dan, speaking of. That Donald Fagen... woo! ;)

Name someone popular right now that really can sing. It's not just thin blondes. I don't think Beyonce has a spectatcular voice but some not all of her songs are okay to listen or dance to.

A few years ago the popular acts that really could sing were Christina Aguilera, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys. They all sold millions of albums as well. It's a sham the newer stars today can't sing and dance.

I can't listen to popular music. I think it's mostly horrible and over-produced to the point that it isn't even real anymore.

Strange voices/acts are popular right now like Lady Gaga, Lily Allen and a few others.. Still these are so over-produced that I can't tell if they can sing or not. Studio tracks make it sound as so.

Van Morrison has a daughter, she sings also. Shanna Morrison. She is great. You'll never hear her on the radio though. Another is Susan Tedeschi.

As for ugly singers, can you imagine Janis Joplin getting a chance?

If you don't want to sit through the whole movie, just a clip to give you an idea of what they are doing. Go to youtube and search "before the music dies autotune". This will give you an idea of what we are hearing.

I don't know about Lily Allen but Lady Gaga can definitely sing--there are several Youtube videos of her singing her songs acoustically, and a few of her singing songs when she was still in college (she was still going by her real name then, Stefani Germanotta). Maybe I'm biased as a Lady Gaga fan, but her voice is really great.

LOVE LOVE Susan Tedeschi! I have my fingers crossed that she and Derek will be at the Fox again this year for NYE. I usually go to Philips Arena to see Widespread Panic, but I was wanting to change it up this year.

I didn't know about Shanna Morrison, though, and I'm surprised as Van Morrison is in my Top Ten of all times!! SO THANKS!

Janis would have never gotten a chance. Poor thing. I love her, too.

I think Carrie Underwood has a great voice
Jennifer Nettles ((sugarland)) has a great voice

I love me some WSP. A friend of mine flew from Houston to NOLA to see Stockholm Syndrome (Schools from WSP is in the band) and ended up at the bar with the guys, buying drinks. Have you thought of making the trip to Asheville to see the Christmas Jam (Warren Haynes & Friends)? Someday, probably after all the kids are gone to college, I will talk my hubby into making that trek.

I have not had the pleasure of seeing Susan, bet it would be great with Derek. He, on his own, it's a crapshoot on what you'll get. If he's playing with her, you can't go wrong. Every time I look, she either isn't in our area or I just missed her in Chicago or Detroit (both a bit of a drive for me).

Kaki King is another, she is definitely an acquired taste though. Not a huge fan but can appreciate the talent and her "uniqueness."

I have yet to make it to a Christmas Jam. The timing never works out. Never. We are actually from Greenville, which is only an hour from Asheville, but we live in GA now. I've been seeing WSP for 20 years, going back to bars!! LOL I'm an old :hippie:

I saw Derek Trucks the first time when he was 12 years old. He wasn't old enough to get into the bar he was playing in, but no one would turn him away, ever. You're right, though, about a crapshoot. He's still amazingly talented.

Thanks so much about the HULU link! Check out this DVD (would make an awesome stocking stuffer) Tom Dowd and the Language of Music. It's a phenomenal story about Tom Dowd, his Midas touch, and who he touched with that Midas finger!! There's no telling what wouldn't have happened without him!

My son lovesssss her (insert roll eyes)
