Hey Beagle owners

We have a beagle-mix named Xena - we don't know what she's mixed with, but she has the beagle face and ears for sure. She's black and white spotted (are full beagles ever this color?) and with speckling like a springer spaniel. She is the sweetest, most family oriented dog imaginable, and she cracks us up with the sounds she makes - sometimes we say we should have called her Wookie, because she sounds like Chewbacca from Star Wars! She will turn one year old later this month, and has been a great addition to our family!

That was my experience with Beagles, my mom had one, she loved that dog, but it was absoulutely the dumbest dog I have ever known. She was also the first dog that I had to personally have put down, I was 17 at the time, and my mom couldn't do it, so my dad sent me when they went out of town on vacation.

Our beagle is getting up in age at 10 and now we really discourage that running and jumping off the deck or top of the stairs because she partially tore her ACL (common football injury apparently) and it is an expensive surgery to repair and then weeks of recovery. You would be wise to not encourage that crazy jumping. If she gets too riled up and runs too much, she really limps around for several days. She is not dumb though and sweet as pie. NEVER, I mean NEVER howls or barks. The rescue said she could have been mistreated because she is very timid and will not show any aggression whatsoever. She is a great pet although doesn't really play. She's afraid of toys and especially squeakers! I love the way she tilts her head to the side as if trying to understand - it's just so damn cute!!

I have two beagles. One has hip dysplasia and is overweight so he doesn't do a lot of jumping around but in his day he would jump our chain link fence!

We also have a young beagle puppy who was just taken to the vet yesterday because he wasn't feeling well and we found out he had been poisoned with rat poison. He is going to be okay though, we get to pick him up tomorrow. He had to have a blood transfusion and he was pumped full of Vitamin K. Man is he ever entertainment and since he has been sick he wasn't acting like himself at all. I can't wait for him to be back and drive me nuts again. He is a sock stealer!

I've had 3 beagles in my life and I love, love, love them. I will admit though that they're not right for everyone.

I love their personalities. The joy in their life comes from sitting on the edge of the couch and looking out the window all day long in between long naps, of course.

My first female died after back surgery from a slipped disk. She barked like no dog I have ever known.

My male dog is very timid and scared of his own shadow. He's never destroyed anything (ok a few small toys), likes to spend time alone, and he's an all around great dog, but I'm not sure if he's the smartest dog. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

My current female thinks the world revolves around her. She is a people person. She follows me around constantly and tries to find ways to get me to rub her. If you're not rubbing her, she will scratch you with her paw to get you to rub. She always wants to be sitting near a human and will block the male dog from getting closer to a human than she is. She spends at least 18 hours a day sleeping. This dog has destroyed more items that I care to think about, but as she's gotten older she has really mellowed out.

Like I said, they're not for everyone, but I sure do love beagles.

Is a big barker and constantly on the prowl for food.
Does the running thing,too!

Will do a great repoitoire of tricks but only for a treat.

I have a beagle mix and I'm cracking up at the descriptions of them running around. Mine, all they knew at the shelter, was that the mother was 100% beagle. I'm pretty sure she's part jack russel and always assumed that her running streaks were "jack" coming out. I guess not! We call that running "butt-tucking" (got that from a friend whose lab does the same thing) because, if you notice, the butt slightly tucks under as they build up speed.

She'll barely touch her bowl of dry food most of the day, but sits and waits for food to drop if someone is eating. She has my neighbor trained to fetch treats. At first she was a little scared of him so he'd hold a Beggin' Strip over the fence to get her to come up to him. Now she sits in that corner of the yard watching him and will whine and bark to get his attention so he'll go in the house and get her a treat. Such a mooch!

Dumb? Yeah. You have to make sure her eyes are focused on you before you throw a toy or she refuses to believe you actually threw it. I can't even begin to count how many times a day I have to get up and walk across the room to point out a toy that's in plain view. She also can't catch worth a darn. You throw or drop something and she just watches it til it hits her in the face.

But she's the sweetest dog I've ever known. She thinks everyone wants to love on her and gets offended on walks when someone passes by and doesn't acknowledge her. She just wants to cuddle and be near someone all day.

I adopted my beagle Oct. He turned two in Dec. He is a strange dude. Number one, he barks at anything. A leaf, an ant, a bus. He insists on getting under the covers every morning after my husband leaves. I am finally getting used to his quirks. He is driving the neighbors crazy with his noise. He is a very happy guy. Are only the males this loud? The two males down the street are very vocal but the girl dog in the neighorhood is quiet as a mouse.

I have never seen an animal who can sleep as much as a beagle! She makes a huge production of getting all the sofa pillows arranged just right before she drapes herself over them for her naps.

Oh, yeah. That's another favorite beagle trait (and probably how your's and mine ended up at the pound!): if my beagle can get out the gate/front door, she's GONE! For an old dog, she sure can RUN!

My parents have had 3 male beagles when I was growing up and none of them barked. My dad even hunted them and they didn't bark unless they were trailing. My Murphy howls at everything. All day long. But at night when I am fast asleep and he is in his bed, my husband can come home from playing poker and the dog won't even budge. Some guard dog

Copper loves to howl too. This is his first spring, and he has just discovered rabbits and squirrels and all he wants to do is howl at them. He also barks at our other two dogs when he wants them to play with him.

He doesn't mind the wet grass though. In fact it rained here most of the day and he wanted to be out in it for quite a while.

We bell trained him when he was a little puppy. We have a bell by the back door and whenever he wants to go out he just rings it. It can be annoying though. If we have to bring him in because of the howling and he still wants to go outside he'll just sit at the door and keep ringing the bell. Or if our two other dogs are outside and he sees them through the glass in the door, he'll ring the bell a bunch to tell us that the big dogs want in (we didn't train the older dogs to ring the bell)

I haven't quite figured out how smart he is yet. He's not as smart as our chow/german shepard mix, but much smarter than our lab mix.

I also had a beagle, he was great! I got him when he was six weeks old. He was the best dog I ever had. His name was Chase. He was sooo smart, he knew everything you were talking about.

I didn't have any young kids when we got him, and I didn't work at the time, so he turned into my baby. I loved to watch him run around and the best thing was when he was trailing something, the barking and howling that came with it. It was great. He would dig a hole just big enough for his snout to fit in and just howl!!

My husband worked the late shift and Chase would sleep with me, his head on my husbands pillow. My husband didn't like Chase using his pillow and when my husband came home, he would always say "HELLO Chase" and try to get him off his pillow, so he could get in the bed. Chase being the stubborn Beagle would always growl at my husbands attempts to move him, in the end Chase ended up not really liking my husband too much. After a while, all you had to do was say "HELLO Chase" and he would growl. It was pretty funny.

He was smart. When I was trying to house train him, if I caught him trying to pee on the carpet, I would start yelling "No pee pee on the carpet". It didn't take him long to learn not to do that. One time he hopped in the bathtub and pee peed in there and just looked over his shoulder at me with a look that was like "you said no pee pee on the carpet"?

He did have some trouble with his ears, mostly ear infections he got after swimming. Chase also had to have surgery for a slipped disk around the age of 4, he was never the same physically, but he sure kept his personality! He had a limp sort of and had nerve damage to his lower back. Even with his problems, he would still go out and trail deer and rabbits on his own. Sometimes you could hear him barking and howling way off in the distance, he sounded like he was a mile away! He loved it.

We lost him last June and I still miss him to this day. We took in another lost dog in November, a catahoula and we named him Buster. My 4yo son asked why we couldn't name him Chase, I told him there would never be another dog like Chase. We also have a walker hound named Sam who is around 10 or 11. I think after reading this thread, our next dog will be another beagle.

My beagle (Dixie) is on my list right now. I haven't slept in 3 nights because she's decided that airplanes sound like thunder. She's terrified of storms. She usually sleeps baby-gated in the laundry room, but we let her sleep in our bedroom during storms. (We don't let our dogs in the sleeping areas due to allergies.)

Finally! a good night's sleep! 1/2 a Benadryl for an itchy dog = everyone sleeping through the night!!!

Our Lucy is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but she is funny. Anything with fur (stuffed animals) she thinks is hers. I guess it's the hunting instinct, but she'll grab the stuffed animal by the neck, and shake the heck out of it, as if she's trying to kill a rabbit. It's hilarious to watch. At Christmas time she did the same with a fake pine branch!

We also have a beagle named Copper. My favorite trait of our beagle are all the pack instincts they have. Whenever she lies down with anyone other then me, she lays facing their feet. With me, she will sleep facing my head. Our uneducated opinion is that she feels she is protecting them, and is being protected by me. I am far away the biggest person in the house, and apparently am considered the leader of the pack. ( at least by the dog).

It works for me, becuase like all hounds she tends to be a little gassy.

Mine does the same thing. She prefers plush toys to anything else. My best friend bought her this big sheep that's about as big as she is (she's about 15 pounds) and it's hilarious to watch her whip this thing from side to side, and eventually trip over it. And when she tries to jump up on the couch with it? Never ceases to be funny! She can't hold it high enough so she jumps, the sheep hits the front of the couch and she bounces about a foot backwards.

Actually, as I was typing this I remembered I put a video up on YouTube of it so my friend could see how much Pippa appreciated her new toy (not sure why I didn't just email it to her, must not have been thinking at the time) since she lives 2 hours away from me. Pippa's a little bigger now, but not much. She still does the same thing with this sheep.

OH and she's a HUGE Disney fan. I bought her some Disney toys and those are her favorites. Poor Mickey and Minnie have had their little arms and legs ripped off and sewn back on so many times I've lost count. She also claimed a small Tigger of mine as her own. I've trained her well.

I watched your video of Pippa, that's exactly what Lucy does, it's so funny. She sleeps in a crate most of the time, and her first thing in the morning is to look for a stuffed animal to take outside with her.

I am really enjoying all of these beagles stories! So many of the same traits, they are consistent if nothing else!

Mattsmattsmomma: Your Chase sounded a lot like my Benjamin! He was my baby before my kids came along. I wasn't working when we got him and he thus ended up very spoiled! We lost him in November of 2006, we have Daisy the beagle now. She is very sweet and much more even tempered than Ben was, but like you, there will never be another dog quite like my original child/dog Benjamin!

And growing up, my beagle Snoopy had the same type of back problems Chase had. She was never quite the same either but lived to be 14.
