I know this is the wrong site and will get moved by our beloved moderators, but I will be having micro-surgery on my back this week, and we have a vacation planned to OKW with DS, DDL, and 2 DGR in Oct. How many of those E ticket rides do you think I will have to miss out on.

I have had dics surgery.
I had a disc rupture and a fragment loged into my syatic nerve.
Very painful, But you wanted to know about the surgery.
I had my surgery at 8:00 in the morning and was released to go home by 4:00 that day! BUT.... You leave with only some stitches and a piece of tape keeping your back from opening up.
You will need a nice recliner to heal in and you won't be doing any lifting for a long while, My doctor won't even let me ride your riding lawn mower. He says it may do damage.
It was May of 2000 that I had mine done and still get pain in the muscle to the left of the scar. Must be scar tissue or something in there.
When visiting WDW I can ride all the ride you just have to make sure you don't slam up or back to hard.
I hope I have helped if not email me and I will answer more questions you may have.
Jim

Before it's moved,

I'll give it a shot, usually there are 7 or 8 e rides.

Back injury,

space mountain.........no

splash mountain...........no

Astro-orbit............yes, just lean right

buzzlightyear......yes, but a slight turn, not hard but just know you shift a bit.

alien...........yes, no movement on ride, just go to the left, monster faces left.

thunder mountain...........no

haunted house ...........yes, and possibly no, there's a part where you lean back, not bad, but if you're not too crowded in your' car you can adjust yourself accordingly. The car kind of leans back, no spinning, but you feel your' weight on your' back as it tilts back.

Pooh ride, not sure if it's open for the e night, but a slight spin may hurt, not drastic though.

I broke some ribs a time back playing football, and had to adjust. Everything is fine now. Micro surgery seems a lot worse than my ribs a few years back, so just relax and watch the kids on the questionable ones, you'll have plenty of time to do it later. The kids will just remember you were there, and that's the main thing.
I could be missing something, but someone will probably help you out. Good luck, and hope for a quick recovery.

I doubt any of them but just let your back be the judge. I had micro surgery once and it was very easy and much better than the pain of the disk. I would think by Oct you should be fine. I worked 2 jobs at the time and only needed off 2 weeks, but I took 2 months. The doctor said he didn't want me working unless it was one job. With our sick leave policy, I couldn't be on sick leave and work another job. Thus the 2 months off. I was feeling great in the 2 weeks. I still have back problems but I ride anything I feel up to. Just ask your DR about it. Good luck with the surgery. I know you will feel better after it is over. Micro surgery is nothing compared to regular back surgery. I do know you won't be able to pick up stuff for a while. By the way, my DR here is the one who patented the micro surgery I had. At least I had the best!!!

Anything that turns fast, twists or bumps is out. The roughest thing I think you can do is POTC. It's your back, but I wouldn't take any chances whatsoever. Chances are your Doctor has been to Disney. Ask him! My wife has a similar situation, but we've comforted her in the fact that she can still ride with the children on the slower rides, of which there are plenty.

I had micro surgery in my neck to repair a herniated disc back in 1996 and it was a full year before rides like Big Thunder didn't hurt. Like a previous poster said, ask your Dr. what he or she recommemds.

Hi Jack.....I am thinking here that since you are asking a specific question about e rides at our beloved theme parks... I am going to leave your question here... Hope your surgery goes well and your trip even better.. Have a great day... :)

Judging from how my mom was after her disc surgery, I would think that you would need to take it very, very easy. Just the bumping of the boats in some rides could possibly be too much. I'd ask my doctor and go with his/her instructions. ENights are really nice though. It was relaxing to me just to be able to walk around in the cool night air. Hope you have a wonderful trip. :)

Based on my experience, the rides I wouldn't recommend would be Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mtn. and Rock 'n Roller Coaster and maybe Tower of Terror. The other rides, as mentioned above, I would approach with caution. I know that's a bummer, but there's nothing worse than having the surgery and then innocently doing something and aggravating that area again. Good luck with your surgery. You will be amazed at what it feels like to not be in pain again! :Pinkbounc

I'm a surgical registered nurse & do these type of cases daily! My name orrnluvswdw (operating room registered nurse loves WDW). It all depends on the chunk or chunks of disc that are pulled out & where they come from. One of the surgeons I work with says most of his patients are back to normal within 6 weeks. Another one I work with has his "back to normal" within 2-3 weeks. The location of the slipped disc is important & IF it's pressing on the spinal cord.

Sounds like you'd be at WDW about 3 months post-op. That should be ample enough time to be able to ride MOST rides. I would however AVOID those that are EXTREMELY bumpy, joltly & move your body around too much. Your body will continue to heal for sometime post-op, BUT you don't want to "move" around the operative area too much! If you've got any more questions, pm me & I'll do the best I can helping you!

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Like I tell my wife, seeing the smiles on the little ones faces will be magical enough for me this trip. Being a DVC member will give me plenty of opportunity to enjoy the parks later. the best advice: I will check with my Doctor. Thanks again for all the best wishes
