DH went in to hospital yesterday to have day surgery on his Inguinal Hernia, the hospital is 45 minutes away from us and he was brought back by ambulance. He fell asleep for about an hour and when the kids came home from school he decided to go upstairs for a lie down, when he got up he felt really sick and then the bugger fainted on me, he hit the deck so hard he has a red mark across his head

My DD saw it happen, freaked out screaming and then I screamed at her to calm down. After about 8 seconds he woke up wondering what all the fuss was about but he couldn't eat all day, he felt nauseas every time he tried to stand up and the pain he was in was intense.

I took him back to the hospital this morning and they basically said this was normal but to stay on top of his pain relief and move around but everytime he moves he feels sick and then he goes white and feels faint and his hernia area is still really painful.

Is there anyone out there who can tell me their stories so I can reassure DH.

Many thanks

Dont have any advice Paula Jane, but just wanted to send you hugs and best wishes for your DH, hope he feels much better soon:hug: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Sorry no help (asked DH but he had a different type of hernia and was in for 4 nights!)

Best wishes to you and your DH for a speedy recovery.

My Dad had a hernia op a few years ago and he too had the nausea and felt faint.

I called the NHS helpline and the nurse (??) asked what pain relief medication the hospital had given him to take when he left. After I told her she said that it was possible that one of the tablets didn't suit my Dad. She said for him to stop taking that tablet and to give him something else instead (sorry but I can't remember).

After a day he felt much better, didn't feel sick anymore and the lightheadness had gone. He was still in a bit of pain a bit but that soon went with a little time and rest.

It could be that the pain relief tablets don't agree with your DH - worth a check.

Hope this helps.

Any surgery will leave people feeling a bit rough for a day or 2. Anaestesia does that to people. Was he sick after surgery? if he was it might be wise to have the anti sickness drug if he ever has to have surgery again.

Don't forget they can really pull you about during surgery and your none the wiser.

Hope he feels a bit better soon & for him to take it easy for a day.

Thanks for the info guys. I took him back to the hospital yesterday and they gave him a different tablet and that one seems to be helping. He's in a bit of pain but the sickness and lightheadedness has almost gone although he does seem to be getting out of breath quite a bit.

The consultant phoned up this morning and berated me for taking him back up there, he said the pain, oozing, fuzzy head etc was all perfectly normal  I was so cross with him and said that if the staff had told him what to expect in the first place then I wouldn't have phoned the hospital.

I'm still mad

Thanks for your good wishes, it means alot

How upsetting for you - what a ridiculous reaction from the consultant! Just hope your DH feels better soon... :goodvibes

That's a terrible reply from the Consultant, how rude!. Hope your DH is starting to feel better today.

Its nothing to do with the consultant had they provided adequate aftercare this wouldn't have been a problem.

Glad to hear he is a bit better. Try reading the advice leaflet on the drugs as my mum was prescribed some that made her breathless we phoned the emergency doctor who was very helpful and said that it was a side effect till she got used to them and to keep taking them.

loads of hugs to you and DH Paula Jane, I hope he feels better soon, I have no advice to offer but wanted to send you both my best xx

I hope that your DH is feeling better soon.

My DH had the same operation about 4 years ago. Because he had private health cover through work he got to spend the night in hospital.

Soon after the surgery he tried to sit up in bed and he went as white as a sheet and said that he felt really faint and nauseous. He could not eat for most of that day as he felt very queezy.

The nurse also told him that if he needed to go to the loo he needed to ring for assistance. Being a typical man he decided that he could cope and got up himself (I had to go home to look after DD), needless to say he fainted in the bathroom and had to pull the emergency chord to call for the nurse.

He was in pain for quiet a few days after the surgery, I can't remember how long exactly. But all I know is that once the pain from the surgery had gone he was in no pain and after the months of suffering that he had gone through it was well worth it.
