I have been an Aeroplan member since mid-July 1993 and had a CIBC Aerogold Visa card for a few years now. I have grudgingly paid the $120 annual fee with the thought that each year would be the last time and I would cancel the card before the end of the year.

I never have.

I'm glad I have kept paying the annual fee and kept the CIBC Aerogold Visa card.

We are always encouraged to check our credit cards for insurance coverage and I have used the car rental insurance coverage included in the Aerogold Visa on a number of times -- that is, I never bought additional car insurance from the rental company and never thought anything about it.

In July we took a family holiday to western Canada and rented cars in Regina, Vancouver, and Everett, WA. After we returned I received notice from the car rental agency in Regina that the car had been damaged during our rental and my Visa card was charged for $309 for the damages.

Great, just great.

I remembered the insurance coverage, made the phone call, faxed all the documents I had and hoped that they might cover the damages. There was one document I wasn't able to get from the rental agency and I was quite sure my claim would be disallowed because of this deficiency in the claim. It was an important document too -- the damage report.

I emptied the mailbox this afternoon without giving much consideration to what was in there -- and upon coming in the house I saw the envelope from the insurance company. I expected it was a request for more information, a letter disallowing my claim, or a letter telling me they were giving it some thought and might let me know in a month or two.

It was a cheque for $304.10. :cool1: I don't know why I didn't get the full $309 I was charged, but I'll gladly pay $4.90 deductible and I will also gladly continue to pay the $120 annual fee to CIBC Aerogold Visa.

Great story and I too ensure all my rentals are charged to my Aerogold! We DO have OPF27 or whatever on our auto insurance policy, but I would much rather the claim be processed by the Aerogold insurance so it has no effect on my History and does not change my rates!
