Hello all!

DH and I checked into a Beach Cottage around 12:30 this afternoon. Our room was ready around 2:30…

Recently, someone asked about the condition of the beach. At that time, my parents were there and, after clarifying a “little miscommunication,” I learned that the beach was in fine condition during their stay (about 2 weeks ago.)

Since then, TS Kyle passed thru. The guy renting the equipment down at the pier explained that when TS/TD (don’t remember which) “Gustav” passed through, they experienced a great deal of erosion. Then, with Kyle, it became even worse. They presently have the lower half of the “ramp” closed off, so they have a place to store the chaise lounges, wave runners, etc. He said they’d reopen it once they get back enough beach on which to store them…

I took a few pictures this afternoon for you all to see. FYI - high tide was reported as occurring at 2:00 PM today, and these were taken around 5:50PM – FWIW.

These next two pictures are favorites of mine from our visit this past February. I know it’s not a fair comparison without knowing the tides for that day – but it still shows a dramatic difference between then & now.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. It's so hard to tell folks what the beach is like since, as your pictures show, there can be big changes depending on the storm activity!

Of course, looking at these pictures is killing me. Have a wonderful time.....I'll be sitting here being jealous.

Beth,

Thanks for taking and posting the pics."Enjoy" the "Beach Cottage"!! Which one did you get?

Thanks for sharing the beach photos with us. I too have never been to Vero Beach (or any beach) and I love seeing those photos. One of these days this desert person will see a beach (the real thing).

Thanks, guys - glad you liked them!

ncligs - (my OKW & VB buddy!) - we're in 1550 - next to the last one at the south end of the resort. We actually requested either one of these - we prefer to be "away" from the pool and all that activity!

We just got back from a walk - the tide is definitely out - but the water is still reaching the pier... There efforts to keep the lights at a minimum for the good of the sea turtles is very evident - it is REALLY dark out there! We just had a bit of a shower, though, so we had some heat lightning to light up the waves, a little...

After gorging ourselvews on our goodies from Publix, we went over and visited the workout room. It was in quite good condition - pretty cool to watch the Miami/Denver game while working out on the treadmill!!

Well - I hope to get up early to catch my traditional sunrise pictures. If anyone wants to see anything specific - let me know!

Thanks for your post and pictures. It's great to see "real" pictures of a place and not just the promotiona pictures (which are usually the best of the best).

I've never been to Vero Beach. I am hoping to go next year, after a 4 day cruise. Now I'm really looking forward to it. :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Beth, very interesting pic's of the high tide beach vs. the low tide in Feb. We were there from the 6th to the 12th and for the majority of our visit, from the 6th through the 10th we had a large expansive beach like your Feb. pic's, then suddenly on the morning of the 11th we walk down to the beach or should I say no beach and see what you have seen in your 1st pic. It was amazing the difference in just over 24 hrs., even the guy manning the dock that morning was amazed at how drastically things had changed in just 1 day! Again, have fun! Jeff.

Beth,
We were in 1550 3 weeks ago, hope you are enjoying it as much as we did. The resort was not busy at that time and it was quite private there. It is so peaceful going to sleep while listening to the waves. Jerry.

My wife and I were at Vero in June of 2001. We were there during a week when high tides were primarily at night so we experienced a beach much like the larger one in your photos.
I recently saw a new program on how over 240 million of federal money is spent regenerating beaches (many in the Miami area).
I wonder if this beach repair is ever done in the Vero area? Anyone know?

Hi Beth-
I am the person who asked about the condition of the beach-and I greatly appreciate your pictures! We are headed down there in 3 weeks and figure it will still be washed away. But we love it anyway!

We were there this same time last year and the whole beach as far up and down as you could walk was quite eroded and damaged. There was a lot of huge debris (including an old refrigerator that had washed up on the beach, huge logs, etc) in the water. All the docks and piers from all the beach houses were washed away-and floating in the water. Huge sandbags lined the beach in both directions. Seawalls were collapsing and had to be rebuilt in front of some of the houses. I wish I had taken pictures!

Then we went down in May. Someone had asked if they do beach restoration in Vero. Well-it was amazing. It was a huge, beautiful, wide sand beach as far as you could see in both directions. Somehow no sign of the damage remained and the deep sand was back. I wouldn't have thought it possible to fix that amount of damage in that short a period of time. Staff said they had huge cranes up and down the beach digging and replacing sand. Piers and docks were rebuilt. Debris was gone! So yes-they do restore the beach.

This year I will have to take before and after pictures to share!
Thanks again Beth for the pictures and information.

Glad you got to see them, CLC.

Although you probably "win the prize," seeing a refrigerator wash ashore... I saw something really WEIRD on the beach yesterday morning as I was walking...

There was a whole, red, onion!! Unpeeled! And it appeared to have "washed in," as opposed to being left behind by a tourist. "Come on honey - grab the suncreen and the beach chair - and don't forget the onions!" :)

"Maybe" theres some sort of thing that "looks" just like an onion that grows out there - thought I've NEVER seen one before - or maybe it fell off of a cruise ship. But "that" was really weird!!
