So here we go again - redundancy is knocking on the door just before our annual Florida holiday :( - sadly with just a standard statutory package

Was in this situation 3 years ago and it came good - but I just feel sick at the prospect of letting the family down. DH is determined we go!

I have flights & car booked and paid for as a 'holiday' with BA.
5 days at RPR is 50% paid for
our 10 days at Disney this is booked for Wilderness Lodge with Free dining - with a large outstanding balance.

Even if I opted for a cheaper hotel such as an all-star by the time you add the tickets and pay OOP for food (the highlight of the holiday is the table service bookings for DH) the cost is fairly similar.

Such a quandary - I know only we can make the decision based our own holiday desires but it is hard to express my worries to DH when he is determined all will be ok and has full faith in my ability to sort something out.

Thought I would post on here for a few words of comfort as I know many have been through similar situations.

is the redundancy definate or just a possibility ?
i have no idea what to suggest , when are you due to leave ? can one of you get any extra work/ part time job before the holiday ?

would you have to pay lots of fees if you changed your booking to a lower value one anyway ?

Zoe, as you know we went through the 'redundancy thing' at the end of last year. Even though the majority of money for our holiday this year was already saved, I knew full well that I wouldn't be able to justify spending that money on a holiday if DH was still unemployed when it came to final payment time. We were lucky and it didn't come to that but I had resigned myself to the fact that we would have to cancel if the worst happened.

Does your travel insurance cover you for any losses as a result of redundancy? The sensible side of me says that if the redundancy is definite, you should consider cancelling as soon as possible so you only lose your deposits. However, the WDW loving side of me thinks that, if there is any way you can feasibly still manage it and not be at risk of getting into debt or leaving yourselves short for paying bills/mortgage, then you should go for it, even if that means changing your booking to stay at a cheaper resort and forgoing some of the TS restaurants you would usually opt to eat at. There are some great (cheap) restaurants off-site and plenty of options to save on accommodation costs.

If your flights and car are booked and paid for, then consider the other options which would allow you to still go - such as cheaper accommodation (off-site maybe?), no dining plan, eating off-site, reducing the number of days spent in the Disney parks, thereby reducing the cost of tickets.

I do think you should make Damian sit down with you, though, and discuss the options too as he needs to know and understand the reality before insisting you still go ahead.

I really hope that it doesn't come to it but know that WDW will still be there if the worst comes to the worst and you do have to cancel.

I just wanted to say thst im sorry you're in this situation :( I know how your dh feels when it comes to looking forward to ts meals as they are the highlight of our trips too!
We priced up a value when we wanted to save but it came out more then ssr when adding food. Good luck to you in sorting everthing out x

I'm so sorry to hear this Zoe :sad2: I remember all too well what you went through in 2010!

I would personally not consider a value during free dining as a means to cut costs. I looked - but as you say, adding DDP or food pushes it way back up there. Have you priced up moderates? We stay at mods by choice but when I did a comparison with POP the moderates with the dining came out a little cheaper overall. Crazy, but true.

Sorry to hear you are going through this.

I'd look at all options.

If you do end up going but budget and not as you've planned then you will still have a fantastic time.

I know i've said it before on here but it is easy to get caught up in the extra's and think they are must haves.

We had two very different Florida holidays last year.

Our main holiday - OKW with deluxe dining, 14 day ultimates, scheduled flights - booked 15 months in advance and planned with a capital P.

The late deal booked 6 days out - monarch flights, offsite accomodation and only 2 disney days and cheap and cheerful offsite eating with coupons.

Whilst very different we had a fantastic time on both holidays.
