OP

Think best thing you can do is stop posting on a public forum about this. Disney easily could find thus thread and easily identify your family.

Once again I'm sorry for what you experienced. I think your expectations are somewhat unreasonable but I wish your SON the best in his dealings with Disney.

Also we all work hard for our vacations and time with family. We all help others so that seems off posting it about yourself.

Oh ok I had no idea I shouldn’t post. I just repeated what I’ve already talked to them about in person and over the phone.
You are are right tho, I should let my son handle it, which is what I told Disney. I’m just emotional about the whole trip.

Out of curiosity, if all of you were vacationing at Disney and a ride operator did something incorrectly (and who admitted to being at fault) that resulted in your child or grandchild breaking their arm or leg and having to have surgery or go home or whatever else that cut your trip short, would you expect the same sorts of responses that are being given to the OP? Would you expect to hear, "Are you sure your child or grandchild didn't do something wrong to cause the injury? Why didn't you prepare ahead of time for such a possiblity? What is it you expect Disney to do? Why don't you just try to appreciate the time you DID have at Disney instead of complaining, or maybe you should reach out to the ride operator and tell them your family member is ok because they are probably feeling worst of all" (these aren't direct quotes, but a paraphrase of the general tone of the responses. I'm not trying to call anyone out, but asking for honest thoughts, do you think people would treat a mistake regarding a ride, differently than a mistake in regards to a food allergy? I have long felt that there is a special animosity towards people with food allergies (look at movies even, where someone with allergies is treated as wimpy or annoying), and I just wonder if I am picking up on that here too, or if it's just in general that people think there isn't a responsibility on the part of Disney if someone is nearly killed as the result of a mistake?

Again, as I said before, I don't know if Disney is legally obligated to do anything here, but I feel like it would be the right thing to do. They are not a mom and pop operation that is going to go bankrupt for doing something nice for this family, I could be wrong but I feel they can afford to offer the family at least some free park tickets.

Op you want Disney to set you all up with a new vacation?
Personally I do think that is asking too much, Disney doesn’t owe you anything.
They should compensate your ds and his wife and children for any medical expenses incurred due to their mistake. Anything else is a good will gesture and not really owed, especially to you since you are not the parent of the victim. I’m sorry if that sounds harsh but you wanting them to replace lost time is over the top. Food allergies come with risks, sometimes vacations get cut short. That is life.

I have to disagree with you. Not everyone, there’s a lot of people who want everything for nothing & never give back.
I sure would like to think everyone here works hard for vacation time but that wasn’t what I was referring to. I would never want to be one of those people, that likes to argue with others on forums.
Also,I would never want to be someone who was not sympathetic & helpful to others in time of need.

Thank you for posting everyone
I’ve taken all advice into consideration, it felt good to vent & im letting my son handle this.

I may be mistaken, but I understood her quoted response here to indicate she agrees about a college fund. She dismissed the suggestion the grandchildren might not be eager to return.

I don’t think I even understand about a college fund, that’s not what is going to make this better for me, it’s about time with my family.

Thanks for saying that
I do feel a little animosity from others. I think I was just looking for a shoulder or two to cry on.

Lesson learned but thank you to all those who understand my emotions

This doesn't have anything to do with who does or does not work for their vacation and who does or does not give back. This should be about actual damages suffered, period -- not a tabulation of who's a good enough person not to deserve a life threatening allergy attack.

Of course you are emotional! If you weren't, I would think you had a few screws loose. I'm hoping Disney finds some way to make sure what happened to your family doesn't happen again.

Nothing at all wrong with coming here and venting a bit.

My quote about the college fund was to give something a bit more tangible and lasting than a trip to WDW. That was all. Especially if the children were a bit nervous about returning to Disney World, which would be understandable.

OP, I get what you're saying about the loss of time.

Time was the most "expensive" part of your trip. And the toughest to try to recoup.
Dh and I put a huge monetary value on time, since DH never has near enough.

Conversely, my mom puts zero value on time. She's late to everything, misses deadlines, won't finish projects, and with no regard to how it can affect others. Drives me crazy...

I'm glad to hear that your grandsons are recovering after their ordeal. I too suffer from food allergies (fish, shellfish and seafood). I also note on my reservation that I have and allergy and speak with the chef. My husband is also a chef, and he has accidently given me fish in the form of chicken salad made with caesar dressing (anchovies) he had me taste test for him. Luckily he realized his error before I swallowed, and was able to spit it out . I don't have and anaphylactic reaction to anchovies, they just give me bad cramps and vomiting. He always double confirms when speaking with they chef on my behalf as he knows how hectic it is in a kitchen. The double check comes as the food is served before I take my first bite. He had a simple fix for how to distinguish the allergy friendly waffles from the mickey waffles, Disney should make them a different character! Say Goofy or Donald Duck for allergies! That way the iron is less likely to be cross contaminated and a visual reminder that these waffles are specially made for someone with allergies. Yes that aren't Mickey, but that is less important than ensuring they are safe to eat. DD's close friend is celiac and has her own toaster, that has never had regular bread in it.
I get that when you are at home you feel safe, and Disney does their best to extend that safe feeling for those with special dietary needs within their walls, but when humans are involved, human error can occur. I hope that Disney is able to cover the medical bills and maybe a token of goodwill to the family.

I understood your comment. As I understand it OP dismissed the idea her grandchildren will have a problem returning. I still don't understand what she was referring to about the college fund.

Oh I understand, I know I want time with them but it’s not up to me. It’s up to Disney & my son. I do know my son loves family time though.

The different character for the waffles is a brilliant idea!

Until you have to tell a 4yo they can't eat the Mickey waffle like brother (or the next table) has.

Just to clarify OP, did both kids have a reaction? I thought you said one child took one bite, the other had the entire waffle.
Also, were the parents/kids supposed to stay though the 21st? And you were moving away from their hotel to the YC?

To answer your question, I would expect Disney to pay for all medical costs, and maybe throw in some park hopper tickets to the parents/kids. I wouldn't expect them to pay for airline change fees unless it was medically necessary/recommended they go home.

I'm glad the kids are ok.

I don't understand why the trip was over. My nephew has a severely life threatening nut allergy. He has had anaphylactic reactions that required epipens and ambulance rides. He's always been perfectly fine the next day.

.

To any child with severe, life threatening allergies, the shape or character of the waffles isn't even going to be on their radar. They are so used to NOT being able to eat what everyone else is eating and having food specially made for them at home. They are usually taught to confirm " This doesn't have 'Allergen' in it?" When we got older we start asking for ingredient lists.

It was in another post. She was referring to what someone else said.

s both kids had to be rushed by ambulance. If my older grandson ate more than one bite who knows what would have happened, I don’t even want to think of it.

I’m glad your nephew was able to continue on the next day with no ill effects.

If you were there with them that day & the next you would understand. Remember everyone is different there is no clear cut recover time for something like this. We all feel very fortunate, that they will recover, some people do not.
