Here now....rocky start, and some great CM's

I know this is a little hypocritical because I will fully admit that I dosed my DD up with Motrin last year when she had a fever virus at WDW. I put her in a stroller and off we went.....however, I think there is a big difference between that and letting your kids spread his pukey germs all over the place. Lying in the hotel lobby, going to restaurants, etc. Eeeew.

I'm sorry you are all feeling sick, that is definitely no fun. I hope you all start to feel better very soon and that you have some more time in The World to celebrate your son's birthday!

When we were there in September, I either caught a stomach bug or was a bit dehydrated because I was laid out for about 2 days toward the end of our trip. The day I started to feel sick we were in MK and I was actually crying (a 28-year-old woman, mind you :) ) because I didn't feel good and I felt like I was ruining our plans! Of course, all DH wanted was for me to feel better. Sweet guy! :lovestruc

Am I the only one that isn't happy that this family took a sick child through the parks and restaurants? Obviously what the child had was contagious since now both parents got it, and spread his germs around.

Nope, I thought the same thing. Taking a noticbly sick child around purposely spreading germs is pretty selfish to me. Lets not forget the pirate cruise too. I, too, bring germ wipes for this reason and also rent a car as some people think it too inconvenient to reschedule their trips or stay in their room while sick....Yes, I know people can be contagious prior to exhibiting symptoms. I will never understand dragging a sick child around while sick though.

We have had a child come down sick while there. While spending days in a hotel room was not fun, I just couldn't bring a knowingly sick child around.

OP - I hope everyone gets better quickly. It's not fun being sick nevermind be sick so far from home.

My prayers are with you all. I hope you start feeling better real soon. Take care. I'm sending magical thoughts.:wizard:

I hope you all feel better soon. We have "been there, done that", so totally feel your pain. I stayed in the room with my son, and my DH & DD went to the pool and playground. Not the way I intended to spend my vacation!

There is a Walgreens not too far from WDW - go there and get you some Acidopholus (probiotics). It is amazing for helping to get over a stomach virus! The brand Culturelle is the best. We got it for DS when he was sick at WDW and he was better by the next morning, so only one day in the room!

When my son was a baby, he had stomach virus 5 times between Sept & Christmas (first time at daycare!). The doctor told me to give him Culturelle, and he was better within 12 hours. Probiotics are also good to take preventatively before you go.

Hope you are all better soon and can have a good time!

Ohhhh....never heard of that. Have to look into it. Is it expensive?

Thing happened to us at 1900 it took forever to get our cake and I asked for it when we arrived. Sorry you had such a bad 1st day. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Thanks for all the well wishes! We are back and all was good! I will post more in another thread. Just wanted to clarify here for all those who think we are horrible parents for taking our sick kid out in public. We had taken him to the Dr. the day before we left (first day sick). We were told it was a 24 hour bug that had been going through our town/schools, and that he would be fine the next day, maybe just tired. He was done throwing up Friday evening and woke up Saturday feeling fine, just tired, sure enough, but also had to wake up at 3:30am. He never had a fever at all. He was good until the afternoon when he said he just didn't feel well and wanted to rest (again, up at 3:30am). We wanted him to get as much rest as possible to help him get over the virus. And yes we did continue with our birthday dinner plans. This was a very special bday celebration with grandparents that the kids have NEVER met. They came in from out of town to have dinner and spend the one day with us. Had he had a fever or throwing up, we absolutely would have cancelled. But just because he didn't feel all that well, wasn't worth missing out on this special evening with grandparents.

The next day was our first day in the parks and we DS woke up feeling fine and we were good to go until lunch time at which point he didn't feel well. We thought food might help. However once at Pecos Bills he just went down hill and didn't want to eat and just wanted to sit and not move. DH or I were going to take him back to the hotel at this point. But DS was so upset and crying over this because again, this was his first day in the parks and his day with his grandparents (that again he had never met before dinner the night before).

On DH and I's first day of feeling ill on Monday, we left the park right away, within an hour of feeling sick (me first, dh later that day), I sucked it up to go on the pirtate cruise for my Sons birthday, because he was in tears when I said I wasn't going. Some things aren't worth dissapointing your child for. On Tuesday we stayed in the hotel the next day trying to give that 24 hours to recover.

We too continued to feel slightly not well the rest of the trip, but not full fledged sick either...just that queasy feeling and no appetite for the entire week. Not enough to sit out our entire several thousand dollar vacation /kids once in a lifetime birthday trip, that had been planned for 9 mos in hopes of not spreading germs that every other person in the park has.

Again thanks to those who sprinkled Pixie Dust down on us. It wasn't an ideal situation, but we tried to make the best of it:goodvibes.

Nope. I had the exact same thought (I've had it a few times while reading threads like this, to be honest).

Welcome back! We had a trip like that a few years ago where everyone in the family got sick one after the other. The people who were feeling well every day went to the parks while the others stayed home in the condo. We still refer to it as our "sick trip". Amazingly enough, we still had a really good time on that trip and it makes us appreciate our healthy trips even more.

Sorry, but although you may not like it, there's absolutely nothing you can do about it except practice good personal infection control.

Here's a helpful list of 8 things the rest of us can do to avoid catching OP's family illness.

Things like:
1) Wash hands after touching railings, benches, ride vehicles and bathroom appliances
2) Stay hydrated
3) Take multivitamins
4) Get plenty of rest
5) Avoid touching your face or eyes
6) Immediately leave the area if someone has a protein spill in your vicinity
7) Don't share eating utensils, cups, or toothbrushes
8) Wash hands before eating, drinking or brushing teeth.

Flaming someone about something that's already done isn't helpful -- what would be helpful is if someone listed about 8 things the rest of us can do to avoid catching OP's family illness.

Who was flaming? I was just asking a question. I have spent days in our hotel room when either I or my daughter was sick and was wondering why the OP didn't do that. Geez.:rolleyes1

This post is a good advertisement for trip insurance. I don't know about anyone else but I don't want to drag sick children around WDW. I don't think it's fair for them or anyone else, especially with a stomach virus that is usually VERY contagious. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars being sick on vacation. I know you can't control it if it hits you on vacation but I wouldn't leave with an illness.

We had a trip like that last Nov. We spent shifs in the hotel with the than 4 year old g-son. He got sick as we were eating desert at The Garden Grill Restaurant. None of the CM came to help. We did get them to bring some paper napkins so I could do my best. His Dad took him back to the hotel. We took turns taking the older two Disneying while the little guy had to stay back.

They are going back this November to try agian. I'm going in May with the other grands to try again.

I'm going to start the prevent program NOW. Thanks for the info.

So sorry you're all not feeling well! There is a 48 hour stomach bug going around up here (New England). We've each had a turn w/ it this past week. Hopefully you will all be feeling better soon.

It's going on here in the Pacific Northwest too.

Since this post is re-circulating...I will chime back in for those who think we had no business being in the parks with a sick kid.

I had taken my DS to the Dr his first day. We were told by a DOCTOR that after his vomiting ended and no fever, he would not be contagious. His vomiting ended the day before we even got on the plane. He never had a fever. He just didn't feel well. I would NOT have taken him into the parks with active vomiting or fever. He woke up feeling fine....then as he got run down and tired just didn't feel well. The rest of the week, DH and I just didn't feel well. No throwing up and no fever, just felt yucky and no energy and no appetite. The first day we were sick we stayed in the hotel just to rest and feel better. I can say the dining plan was a waste for our family who just didn't feel like eating!:)

Do you know how many people were walking around coughing all over things at the parks? One man on a bus kept coughing right into the back of my head without covering. Does that mean he may have been contagious and should not have been on that bus? Who knows, not for me to judge. I was irritated about the lack of basic manners with covering a cough...but that was it. Kids were sneezing all over without covering their sneezes. I think those things that actively spread germs onto every surface is likely more contagious than what my family had, considering we weren't throwing up in the parks or coughing or sneezing on anyone.

So to make a long story short, yes we didn't feel well, but not sick enough to ruin our vacation. We made the best of it and went with the flow and missed out on things so we could rest more...but I wasn't complaining about it either. My biggest disspointment was not being able to indulge in all the junk food I had my heart set on! My whole point of the thread was to say no matter how much you plan and plan, you can't control everything. We go into the parks knowing it's one giant germ fest and we make sure to practice extra good hygiene and hand washing.
