Here is what happened on our Western cruise

Like many others, I planned and planned our trip for over a year. But even the best-laid plans...

FRIDAY: Flew into MCO; toiletry bag DOES NOT ARRIVE with other 7 bags; mild panic sets in; airport Hyatt has NO CRIBS AVAILABLE despite request made months ago; we make do with pushing bed against wall and getting rollaway
SATURDAY AM: Father-in-law shows up at the door at 7 am with our toiletry bag, which he has just retrieved from United. Not sure where that bag had been all night or where it had gone, and United wasn’t telling either! Anyway, two crises passed and we were on our way; Baby starts looking bad – cold symptoms, getting cranky;
SATURDAY NOON: Board and go to our room to drop our stuff (three kids and it’s already a bit of a mess); go to Topsiders to eat. Go back to the room where there is a note on our door from the folks two doors down – they had a misunderstanding with their reservations and would we be willing to change rooms with them so they could have connecting room with their family? Yikes – we’d like to be with our family, too, who is 6 doors away. We’ve already drilled the stateroom numbers into our boys’ heads for the last week so they’d never get lost, etc. But, since we figured we dodged a bullet with the “found” toiletry bag, and wanting to be nice and wanting to avoid bad karma, we agreed to switch. They gave us a bottle of champagne for our trouble.
SUNDAY AM: Baby getting worse but sleeps on grandma on deck 9 by the Goofy pool while the kids play.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Go to Morty show, where Baby acts just fine and is having fun clapping etc. until 10 minutes into it proceeds to projectile vomit all over Mommy, just missing nice friendly man in front of us.
MONDAY AM: Go to health center where Baby is diagnosed with ear infection, and together the doctor and I decide he vomited from the cold, drainage, etc. Three days in, I am not having fun yet.
MONDAY NIGHT: Older boys go to show with grandma and grandpa. Son #2 wakes up at 3:30 am vomiting and continues to vomit until morning, followed by diarrhea.
TUESDAY AM: Son #1 vomits and has diarrhea. Woohoo – we’re cruising! We spend the day in the room while everyone sleeps it off.
WEDNESDAY AM: Take #1 and #2 to health center as requested by documents upon embarking. Mandatory 48 HOUR ISOLATION, but doctor recognizes we have already served 24 hours of our sentence. Boys are obviously feeling fine. Guest Services send VCR to our room, with 3-page list of videos at our disposal upon request. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are FREE during our isolation (ok – this could work). They provide an empty stateroom with two kids’ programming counselors for 5 HOURS, during which time my two older boys AND THE COUNSELORS jump on the bed, pull off the covers, play games, watch videos and learn how to make entire toilet paper rolls stream down the all-powerful toilets with a single flush. They order room service, Shirley temples, etc. and have an absolute blast while grandma and grandpa take care of Baby and Mommy and Daddy get off the ship for the first time in Cozumel. Guest services brings me a menu from dinner and my server brings it up to the room during dinner time.
THURSDAY: the boys enjoy a relaxing day at sea but cannot eat much and we don’t send them to kids clubs or let them swim because they are still recovering and we certainly don’t want to share this misery with anyone else. Baby continues to have diarrhea and we used all 68 diapers up (do the math: 68 diapers / 6 days) and had to buy diapers in Cozumel. Mommy doesn’t leave the room except to eat quick breakfast and lunch.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Daddy and Mommy finally sneak away to Palo for a quite dinner (first night I have been to dinner in three days). One hour later Mommy gets the flu and proceeds to vomit for hours. Son #1 inexplicably has a relapse in grandma and grandpa’s room and does the same.
FRIDAY: It’s Castaway Cay day! We were counting on this to salvage at least one day of our vacation, and Son #1 has been talking about going back to Castaway Cay for months. We wait until noon to get off the ship and enjoy four hours of bliss on the beach. Don’t eat, don’t touch anybody. We all feel fine and baby sleeps the whole time on the beach. On the way back to the ship, Son #1 complains his leg hurts. I suspect what it is, and we stop by first aid on the way back where the nurse confirms SEA LICE – this poor kid cannot catch a break. A slather of hydrocortisone cream fixes him right up.

The weather was incredible, full and nearly-full moons in the clear sky every night. I didn’t make even one show, not one sailaway party, sat in a lounge chair by myself for exactly 1.5 hours all week and had dinner in a restaurant only four nights. Travel insurance kicked in, at least, which we needed to heavily tip our poor stateroom host, who had to change our sheets three times. It was a bit of a bummer (okay – that’s what I say now, but during the cruise you can imagine my disappointment!). At least we’re all together and home safely. We need a vacation from our vacation.

The good news is: Disney really took care of us. They didn’t have to provide us with anything while we were sick but they did, and that made it a bit easier to deal with.

You poor dears! I really feel for you and all the "fun" you had. I really appreciate your posting and the sense of humor you maintained in relating your vacation adventures.

I am so sorry to hear about your trip. After all the planning and anticipation, you must feel awful. I did get a laugh about the counselors in the empty stateroom though......that was kind of cool for the kids. Hope your next trip is better !

I'm sorry but you have a great attitude.....a blessing is coming your way!!!

My heart was breaking for you as I read your story. How very lucky your children are to have such a wonderful devoted mom. We've had a few terrible breaks with vacation or weekend plans, but none as bad as yours. You have an excellent way of looking at things! I hope the next vacation will be so wonderful it will make up for this one. :D

So sorry to hear about your trip! Just curious, but what are your kids ages? I'm impressed DCL gave you councelors to give you a break.

I truly hope your next vacation is everything you dream of, you deserve it!!!

Wow -

I guess you need to have a good sense of humor after that trip. You wait so long for the trip, and the cruise is expensive and you don't even get to enjoy it! So sorry this happened to you. We took our first cruise on the Magic in 1999 (3 day) and had an absolute blast. We are taking the Western Caribbean cruise on 8/2/03 and can't wait. You must try this cruise again and chalk up what happened during your trip to a case of bad timing.

Wow! Talk about Disney going above and beyond here! I've never heard of them doing this and I think it was a REALLY cool thing for them to do!

Sorry about your ruined trip though.

and words of support. I really needed it. But I am now officially "over it" and can truly say I am recalling warm air, sunny skies and steel drum music by the Goofy Pool when I think of our week. This was our second Disney cruise (did a 4-day in 2001) so at least I know how it CAN be. I am already trying to figure out how we can get back for maybe a quick 4-day in September before school starts.

My two older boys are 4 and 7. I really cannot get over how great Disney was in helping us make the best of a bad situation.

I really, really feel for you as I also have two boys and have done the sick vacation thing more than once. Of course, I hadn't spent all that money and anticipation on a cruise! You poor thing!

Well, you'll just have to go again. You deserve it! At least you had lots of Disney cooperation. That was wonderful of them. Hope the next cruise is just warm breezes and soft summer nights.

And no matter what happens on our (1st ever) cruise, I'm going to remember what you went through... and just be thankful it isn't worse.:bounce:

I'm really sorry to hear how much bad luck you had that week on what should have been a very MAGICal time. It does sound like Disney went above and beyond and it is great that you can look back and remember the good points and not dwell on the bad. Here's hoping that pull off that September cruise and that it is WONDERful for you and the whole family!

Quite the trip CPR ;)
As you say you're over it now but I'm sure at some point you thought you were on a cross between the Exorcist meets Titanic :)
I told my daughter about your post and now she can't wait to try the toilet paper down the super duper flusher :p
Actually neither can dad :)
What, or how much does your insurance cover for something like this??
Cheers,
Grumbo

You truly have to be commended for your attitude!!!!!!! You ought to teach lessons to some whiners that complain about every tiny thing! You are just the kind of people I like to be around on vacation! I can deal with the unexpected/adversity/sickness, etc. it Happens!!!!!! But to just go with the flow - you are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All of you are real troopers! Fast forward 20 years. Imagine how much fun you will have telling your daughter in laws about this trip. You can't make this stuff up! It will become a legendary family story for years to come!

I can feel for you! My daughter got the chicken pox while on vacation years ago. What a mess! We still laugh about it!

We were on the March 29th 'Mystery' cruise - and we booked another cruise! Wanna see what the Western really SHOULD be like - and even if the weather or whatever doesn't cooperate - we will go with whatever fate offers. In retrospect, I have to say, that Costa Maya - the unexpected port - and unplanned for really became a jewel in the rough. We didn't micro manage it to death and just did what we could and LOVED it!!! Maybe all cruises should be 'mystery'cruises - don't know where you are going and don't know what you will do when you get there!!!!!

Bless your heart!! I hope your insurance was enough to pay for another cruise! Sounds like you know how to make the best of a bad situation though.

Oh CPR, bless your heart. We had a WDW trip where the little one kept barfing on me and himself. I memorized the path to the Ft. Wilderness laundry, had to wash clothes five times. But your trip really takes the cake (or tosses the cookies). Your next trip will be a free all-expense-paid week cruise and week stay at deluxe-of-your-choice with private-no-lines-for-anything and first-class airline. Start entering contests and lottery games! You deserve to win.

When we were quarantined on our January cruise, trip insurance paid off. We got back a pro-rated amount for the days we were quarantined. Math went something like this (numbers are examples only):

Price for cruise (minus price for insurance) - $1000
Days of cruise - 4
Days quarantined - 2.5

Price per day = 1000/4 = $250
"Loss of vacation" = 2.5*$250 = $625
Refund $625

We had bought the insurance through Disney.
