"Her Name Was Definitely Mary". Our 1st anniversary trip, May 2011 *NEW 9/6

I just started to read your trip report. if you already gave the answer to the picture question i haven't seen it but i believe you are on the boat in Magic Kingdom. :). I remember taking my photo in there as well a few years ago.

looking forward to reading your trip report. :)

The navigation device the pilot was referring to was (probably) the VOR, a radio navigation system that yes, is required equipment on airliners. In fact all planes that I've flown have them.

Enjoying the TR!:)

Hi! Just wanted to say I'm subscribing and will follow along. :goodvibes I like your style of writing. I like reports with a good bit of detail without it being boring. You have a good balance! Very entertaining.

I'm impressed you decided to get in a workout at all! I know you said this was the only day, but still... I workout several times per week at home but have NEVER even considered it on vacation. Props to you!

Also, I have to say something about the "sandal-boot" picture you posted earlier. I was looking at the picture first and hadn't read your comment about the pic really being about the shoes. But one of the first things I noticed were those shoes. I was thinking, "OMG - what are those!?!" and then I read your comment! Too funny. And I'm with you, I certainly hope they're not a new style. You'll never catch those hideous things on my feet.

Can't wait for more!

Thanks for joining in! I'm glad that you are enjoying the report so far (I promise to update more regularly now!)

I was glad to at least work out the once... at least I know what the gym is like there- and it is nice!

Haha, I was a little nervous that after I posted the sandal boot there would be replies telling me that I'm a dork for not knowing what they are and for making fun of them. Glad to know it wasn't just me that thought it was weird!

Once the plane was up and running you guys had a great start to your trip! Your room looks nice and the view cracked me up. We stayed at AKL Jambo for a long weekend once and our view wasn't of a hut but the balcony was really small and the door wasn't a slider, it pushed open but there wasn't enough room to open it all the way. I remember getting to the room after a really late check in (around 1am) and opening the door to see the view and it crashed into the chairs hahaha. I was so afraid I woke up the people around us. Your decision to change your first day definitely made the day more relaxing! We always used to race off to a park the first day but now we just relax and enjoy the resort and go to dinner and start off fresh the next morning. We'll never go back to the old way - you might not either! Can't wait to hear more!

:rotfl: Crashing the door into chairs is totally something I would do, so I can relate!

I think we'll try to plan a more relaxing start to our trips from now on...

I found your TR this morning and am thoroughly enjoying it...I love all the details and the pictures!

Thanks! I am so glad you decided to stop by! :goodvibes

You got the picture! :thumbsup2

Thanks for reading!

That must be what he was talking about! He did say that planes are required to have them, but also made a point of telling us that they don't need them to fly. I'm just glad we were able to take off after only a short delay!

I am finally home from a week of house sitting! As promised, I can update more regularly now. So let's not waste anymore time.... here it is... the conclusion of Day 1!
*********
So after my strenuous work out (ok, not really… I ended up only using the elliptical for about 30 minutes, but it was hot in there and it felt like I was working really hard) I was starving! Once we were showered and ready, we headed back out to walk over to Jambo house again.
We arrived a little early for our 5:50 ADR at Jiko and asked a hostess to take our picture:

We had to wait just a few minutes before we were shown to our table. This was a first time restaurant for us and we were both looking forward to our meal. I really like the atmosphere here- not too stuffy, but very pretty. You can kind of see the restaurant behind Ben here:

IMG_5180.jpg

Our server’s name was Ronald and he was super nice! I didn’t actually ask him for a suggestion on what to order, but I did ask him to let me know if what I was ordering wasn’t good :rotfl:). He assured me that I had made good choices- thanks, Ron!
There was some delicious bread and some kind of seasoned butter (ok, so food reviews are not my strong suit…). Ben liked the bread so much, that when Ronald went to clear his bread plate, Ben grabbed the remaining piece of a roll and shoved it all in his mouth. Ronald asked him not to choke, because he didn’t want to get in trouble with his boss for making Ben eat his bread so fast. We assured him that Ben would take full responsibility for any bad effects scarfing his bread had!

Ben ordered the Grilled Wild Boar Tenderloin as his appetizer and the Grilled Shrimp Curry as his entrée. He thought both courses were delicious, but wished he could have had just one big portion of the boar- I tried it and agreed; it was super flavorful!
I had the Jiko Salad to start and the Braised Beef Short Rib to follow. The salad was so good! I love goat cheese, so pretty I’ll love pretty much anything that has it as an ingredient. My short rib was also really good- but the stand out was the onion and carrots that came with it- they were scrumptious and fresh!

This was a pricey meal, but we really enjoyed it! We probably won’t be back, only because of the price and the fact that there are less expensive places we still want to try. But I absolutely recommend it!
Once we were through eating, I was exhausted

(I’m not actually sleeping here, but it makes my point…)

We still wanted to visit the Magic Kingdom for evening EMH, but knew nothing was going to happen without a nap. We headed back to Kidani Village and were back in our room around 7pm. We set an alarm, and got into bed. I was worried that we would sleep right through the alarm and not wake up till morning, but it was a risk we needed to take if we were going to have any chance at having fun in the park…

When the alarm went off at 8:30, it only took a little prodding to get me out of bed. We used our refillable mugs for some coffee and got ready to head out.
When we got to the bus stop, a Magic Kingdom bus was waiting for us,

and we climbed aboard.

We got the park around 9:40pm. We still had 5 full hours before closing!
Since I had pre-paid for the Photopass CD, our first stop was to get a picture taken.

Once we entered the park, we ran into a crowd of people clogging Main Street. Duh, I had forgotten about Wishes at 10! All of a sudden, music started and I realized the Magic, Memories and You show was starting! This was a must-see for us, so we figured we’d try to catch a glimpse of the castle. We sorta sidestepped our way into the middle, near where the flagpoles are just in time to see most of the show. Being that far back, we missed a bit, and there was a decidedly un-magical girl next to me. But I still managed to be moved enough by the show to tear up more than once. This has got to be one of the best things Disney has ever done- it is amazing. Which is why when the show ended and the girl next to me goes, “is that all?” I told Ben we had to get away from her right now before she sucked the magic out of me, too!

But the show ends and Wishes starts almost immediately, so we couldn’t go too far among the crowd. At one point we were on the sidewalk in the walk-way and we had to step off the curb (CMs don’t let you stop here, they keep a path clear). As I stepped onto the street, a woman put her hand on my shoulder and snipped at me, “Please do not stand directly in front of us.” Um, I wasn’t planning on it… but when you’re standing on Main Street to watch the fireworks (which are in the sky…), you’re going to have someone in front of you. Also, Ben and I are short people… anyone can see over us! Anyway, I get that she didn’t want her view blocked, but she didn’t even give us a chance to get out of her way before she snapped at me. I was letting it bother me way too much, but then Wishes started, and we stood still and watched. Ben had never seen it and I think he was really impressed.

Once we were able to, we made our way to Tomorrowland. Since one of our goals this trip was to try new things, Ben figured it was a good time to do Stitch’s Great Escape- a new one for him. I warned him that it probably wasn’t going to be anything he’d like, but was willing to go along. It was just like I remembered- kinda boring. Ben couldn’t believe that it was an attraction… he thought it was completely dumb and pointless. Well, now we both know that.
We rode Buzz and got a Space Mountain FP

Photo0004FourBySix.jpg

Then it was time to head over to Adventureland cause we needed dessert! We each goat a pineapple float with vanilla ice cream. Ben took this series of pictures, which cause him to laugh every time he looks at them:

IMG_5188.jpg

IMG_5189.jpg

The first was just a face I made when I noticed him taking a picture. The second was me trying to be normal. The third is when I finally got it right.

As we walked away from the Dole Whip stand, I was talking about how much I love them when all of a sudden I asked Ben, “Did I just say donut?” He looked at me and answered, “No…” Then we cracked up. For whatever reason (lack of sleep, probably…), I thought I had accidentally called the Dole Whip a donut. But I didn’t. It was funny, but you probably had to be there
Incidentally, this was actually the second time I said ‘donut’ without meaning to- when we were on our way to Kidani Village, a Donald Duck cartoon was playing on the Magical Express bus and I made some comment about what I like about ‘Dunkin Donut’ cartoons. I don’t know what it was about my subconscious and donuts that day!
So once I finished having a mental breakdown, we hopped aboard the Jungle Cruise and had an amazing skipper named Lindsay. She was seriously awesome- it was great!

The Electrical Parade had us trapped in Adventureland, so we did Pirates next. It was after this that Ben had to stop a teenager from vandalizing a sign. The kid kept pushing on a post with a restroom sign, making it tilt. The kid’s dad was right there, but didn’t seem to care at all. After watching for a moment, Ben had to say something: “You probably shouldn’t do that.” The kid and the dad both looked startled, and he stopped messing with the sign. Maybe none of our business, but it was really obnoxious that this kid felt like he needed to try to break something just because it was there.

The upshot of that interaction was that the parade had now passed so we could leave Adventureland. We took a spin on Splash, and then moved on to the Haunted Mansion.
I was so excited to check out the new interactive queue! There wasn’t much of a wait, but we just took our time and let people pass us. Folks didn’t seem to be stopping to check things out, but that could be because it was dark out. My favorite part was the ‘Ghost Writer’! I definitely wanted to come back during the day. We were also big fans of the changes made inside (the new hitchhiking ghosts are great!)

After a spin on Small World, it was time to use our Space Mountain FP. By now I was really hungry (I don’t know why- I had eaten plenty…) and we couldn’t find anything other than ice cream and popcorn to eat. Every counter service place we tried was closed. Does anything stay open for the late night EMH? I eventually decided that popcorn was better than nothing, so we walked up to the cart near Space Mountain.
The girl working did not speak English as her first language. I only mention that because it made it extra funny when Ben ordered a “small whatever”. She blinked at him and said “popcorn?” And I lost it- laughing hysterically. Because it was a popcorn cart and only sold popcorn, Ben was just ordering by size (the ‘whatever’ was because he wasn’t sure if the small was called a small, or if they called it a medium like at the movies…) but the CM thought he didn’t know what the stuff was called. I thought it sounded like he was ordering anything she gave him, as long as it was a size small. To my sleepy, hungry self this was comedy gold.

On that note, we figured it was time to get out of there and go to sleep. But we had to stop for a couple more Photopass on the way:

We left the park just before 2am, and got a bus right away. We made it back to our room quickly (well, as quick as you can when you are staying at AKL…) and I was asleep before I knew what was happening.

Now the important question: Would MK rope drop happen tomorrow?

Dinner sounded nice!

Wow...MK stayed open late for EMH! 2am? that makes for a really late night.

I love all the pp pics. I am going to preorder for our next trip...and try very hard to make good use of it. I think the last time I went with the guys we got under 10 pics taken. (there was no need to order the pp cd then)

Can't wait to read your next update! :thumbsup2

Great update!!!

I can't believe rope drop after EMH and getting home at 2am was an option. You're nuts! :P Or maybe I'm just a wimp now that I have kids... lol. That's very possible.

Great TR! Looks like you were able to get a lot of attractions in on the first night!

Kudos to your DH for stopping that teenager from damaging the sign, those things drive me crazy and seeing parents not control their child is nuts! No Respect!

Not that it will help you now but there is a way to get to the pool without having to go through the lobby especially when you are staying on the side you were on.

leave the pool at the gate near the bar.. there is a side walk that goes into the parking structure.. just walk through the parking structure until you get to the first elevator which will take you to your floor... we loved Kidani but it is a rather long walk for breakfast. We did jikko too but quite cheap by only having appetizers

I think living in MA has got 'Dunkin Donuts' stuck in your blood!

Tell Ben Im sending him a digital high-five for telling that kid to stop being a twerp and wrecking a sign. Ugh, un-magic people. Go to 6Flags and complain there. Save the airfare.

Pretty dress at Jiko!

This is a great TR so far!:yay: Can't wait to read more!

I laughed out loud about the lady telling you not to stand in front of her during Wishes! Uhm...where would she like you to stand, then!?! It's just a big mass of people!

I busted out laughing reading about having donuts on the brain. I do stuff like that all the time!

I like all your PP Photos!

I love the dress you wore to dinner! Jiko sounds so yummy, I really hope to try it someday!

Yay, glad you made it to MK for magic hours, I love being in MK late at night! :cool1: I had to laugh at your un-magical experience watching the new castle show, standing next to that girl who was just too cool for Disney World, apparently! I can't wait to see it, I know I'll cry!

And yay for Ben saying something to that child...isn't it amazing, when you speak up to people when they're being jerks, they look SO surprised, like it can't possibly be them you're talking to? :confused3 :rotfl:

Love all the photopass pictures! :thumbsup2

MK was actually open till 3am! We couldn't quite make it, though.

We tried to get a lot of PP... though we could have done better and got more!

Great update!!!

Well, at home when I was planning rope drop was an option. In real life... you'll see ;)

Great TR! Looks like you were able to get a lot of attractions in on the first night!

Kudos to your DH for stopping that teenager from damaging the sign, those things drive me crazy and seeing parents not control their child is nuts! No Respect!

We were able to fit a lot in that night- crowds tapered off a lot after midnight!

We were actually on the other side of Kidani (closer to Jambo House). Though I guess we could have walked through the building instead of outside...

Pretty dress at Jiko!

I was glad he spoke up- maybe that dweeb will think twice next time.

Thanks- the dress was from J.Crew outlet last year and I never wore it. Finally got to break it out this trip!

This is a great TR so far!:yay: Can't wait to read more!

Aww, thank you so much!

Seriously. I actually said to Ben, "What about the people you're in front of". She probably heard me but, oh well. I was just surprised that 1) she touched me and 2) she jumped on me so harshly! I wasn't ready for that!

I busted out laughing reading about having donuts on the brain. I do stuff like that all the time!

My brain, mouth and ears were all on different wave lengths! :rotfl:

Thanks! I love that dress, too!

I couldn't believe someone could watch the castle show and not be impressed! It is just so amazing! Why do people waste money going somewhere they don't enjoy?

Joining in! I love your trip report so far! Jiko sounds like it was a relaxing, enjoyable dinner for the evening of your arrival.
You guys got a lot of attractions knocked out during EMH! My DF would be jealous; he's always trying to get me to do as many rides as possible during that time frame, but I end having to give up around 2a.m. :rotfl:

I can see where your DH was coming from when he asked for a small "whatever," and I bet the look on that CM's face was priceless when she heard that.

Ok, Joyce, I'm all caught up now! And I am of course loving your TR. You are such a great storyteller. You have inspired me to take more detailed notes for my upcoming TR. It's like we're right there with you! :thumbsup2

I'm glad to hear you liked Jiko. I think I'd like to try it out sometime. And why is it that parades and fireworks bring out the worst in people?! I guess it's because everyone is so worried about having the perfect view but geez! I love all of the photopass pictures - especially the kissing one in front of the castle! It is so cute. :cloud9:

If you make it to MK rope drop, I am going to be very impressed!

Not a bad evening at MK, apart from the annoying rude lady during Wishes.

Loving all your pics and the donut comment. I hope you satisfied your donut craving/thoughts later on in the trip

So glad to hear you guys liked Jiko...we are trying that for the first time in October :goodvibes

You guys sound like me when I am tired, just giggly and out of it :goodvibes but it looks like you had lots of fun at EMH!!

Your dinner sounded wonderful! I'm glad you made it through evening EMH at MK! Yay for Ben telling that boy to stop vandalizing!! :thumbsup2 Those type of kids (and the unmagical girl) really annoy me! It's WDW for crying out loud! :rotfl: Anyway, your PhotoPass pics are great! Oh wow, rope drop after a night like that! Phew you're brave! I'm curious to see if it happens- we can never make it! :lmao: Looking forward to more!!:goodvibes

The first part of the day was very relaxing and made EMH possible! We didn't make it all the way till 3am closing, but we did pretty well!

Thanks, Courtney! Sometimes I think I'm too detailed! I can't even get past day 1! :rotfl:

Jiko was great! Really, really yummy!

Not a bad evening at MK, apart from the annoying rude lady during Wishes.

Loving all your pics and the donut comment. I hope you satisfied your donut craving/thoughts later on in the trip

I don't even like donuts that much! I have no idea what was wrong with me!

So glad to hear you guys liked Jiko...we are trying that for the first time in October :goodvibes

You guys sound like me when I am tired, just giggly and out of it :goodvibes but it looks like you had lots of fun at EMH!!

I hope you enjoy your Jiko dinner in October! It's a great place!

There was definitely some sleep deprived looniness going on with us that night...

Your dinner sounded wonderful! I'm glad you made it through evening EMH at MK! I just don't get why a parent would drag their bored and slightly destructive teenager to the parks. Why waste the money? :confused3

We've always been rope drop people... but things can change... ;)
