"Her Name Was Definitely Mary". Our 1st anniversary trip, May 2011 *NEW 9/6

I just don't get why a parent would drag their bored and slightly destructive teenager to the parks. Why waste the money? :confused3

Maybe I can help with this... since I have brought the bored teens. (my boys..not my dd's) Cause you HAVE to take them with you. :rotfl: Actually, if I had done a TR for my trip last spring it could have been summed up with... DS#1 did his best to enjoy, but had a few moments of getting irritated and spend most of the trip seeming like he would fall asleep at any moment. D#2 ate alone...went to the parks alone...only met with us when he HAD to for ts meals. (he was just to cool to spend time with us) They were not destructive... well... except for when ds#1 got mad that his birthday wasn't turning out the way he wanted and chucked his bday button. :rotfl: Really? Who did that hurt? Afterward, he realized he wasn't getting a new one cause that was the consequence for his little fit... his 17 year old fit. So... bringing some teens is a challenge... and a waste of money... but for some of us it is the only choice we have if we ourselves want to go. Now... bringing my dd was always a joy... she still is my #1 person to take to the parks with...well her and my youngest dd. :goodvibes

Oh Ann, I didn't mean to say that people shouldn't bring their older kids so the family could go! Even I have hissy fits at WDW, and I love it as much as anyone. It was the casual way this boy was trying to knock the sign over and his father's complete lack of response that I didn't get. I don't think the average bored teen would do that.
I hope I didn't offend you or your boys!

:rotfl: Awe, Joyce... No! I wasn't at all offended. I hope you were not by my comment..I was trying to be funny. (:rolleyes1 maybe unsuccessfully) I was just kinda realizing that I HAVE to bring Alex again. And your comment about why do people waste the money..well... I kinda wonder myself. :rotfl2: Actually, he is starting to show promise..and maybe he won't be a moody little..cus.. on the trip. But..no.. he is not destructive... and typically I am not totally oblivious to what my kids are doing....and other than their own stuff (or unfortunately at times MY stuff) my kids wouldn't destroy other peoples property...

Haha, glad we worked that out :goodvibes
After reading your reply, I read again what I wrote and thought I sounded a little more grumpy than I actually felt!

You know those plans you make, change, change again, and obsess over the months leading up to your trip? The ones in which you figure out where you’re going each day and where you’re eating. Wake-up time is accounted for, travel time is figured out. We work so hard to get them just right. And our Day 2 plans called for us to be up bright and early. Not only to make rope drop at the Magic Kingdom, but to be able to visit the Polynesian first for some Kona coffee.

:rotfl: you think we’re crazy now, don’t you? I mean, we were at the Magic Kingdom till 2 am, how could we possibly want to be up that early the next day? Well, we didn’t! So for the second time in 2 days, we changed the plans. Before going to sleep, we set an alarm for the late hour of 9am.
When that alarm went off, we managed to get up but we didn’t rush. We had brought bagels with us, so we toasted a couple and had breakfast out on our balcony.
IMG_5193.jpg

We then headed over to the bus stop to begin our journey to the MK. Once there, we walked over to the boat launch and had a short wait for a boat.
IMG_5195.jpg

It’s funny that we stayed at the Poly for a whole week last year and never once took the boat launch to the MK! We made up for it this time, though…

IMG_5197.jpg

IMG_5204.jpg

Ben wanted to be sure to get a picture on a boat, because he was wearing his favorite T shirt ever. If you are familiar with the “I’m On a Boat” SNL skit (even funnier is the explicit version you can find on You Tube), you’ll see why we found it hilarious that a Disney shirt had this phrase.

We thoroughly enjoyed our leisurely boat ride, and were soon docking at the Poly. As we pulled in, we saw a wedding ceremony on the grassy area near the Poly beach.
IMG_5205.jpg

They had an absolutely gorgeous day for it!

Ben originally had wanted to get coffees at the Kona Island coffee stand because we really like Kona coffee, and why not? We weren’t too impressed, honestly. But it was nice to have an excuse to wander the lovely Polynesian grounds. After our stay here, we don’t like the rooms, elevators, or corridors of the longhouses, but we just love the rest of the resort! We sat on a swing and drank out coffees on the beach. It was very relaxing!

Since it was now approaching 10am, I thought heading to the MK would be silly as it was bound to be getting more crowded. So, we decided to walk to the TTC and monorail ourselves over to Epcot. I stopped on the path to the TTC to finish my coffee and savor one of my favorite spots in Disney. I just love this little path!

IMG_5206.jpg

As we wearing sitting there, a gentleman asked us where the Ferryboat was, so we pointed him down the path to the TTC. He headed that way, and we followed a little after. Once we got to the sidewalk at the end of the path, we ran into the same man, still lost. I felt bad that I hadn’t given him directions further than this, but I thought that once he saw the TTC he’d be ok. Well, he was frazzled and obviously running late to meet his family and just didn’t see where he needed to go. So Ben and I walked him past the ticket kiosks and pointed out the Ferryboat. His family was right there waiting, so that all worked out well!

With just a short wait for a monorail, we were on our way to Epcot!
There was a pretty good group of people waiting to get in, but they were all lined up at bag check. We don’t carry a bag, so we were able to slip right in past the mob. Yay!

IMG_5207.jpg

Bet you can’t guess where we were headed.

Nope, not Soarin’. Not Test Track, either. No, not even Mission:Space. We made a beeline for Ellen’s Energy Adventure. We were trying to experience new things this trip, and this was another attraction that Ben had never done. I don’t particularly care for it, and had never wanted to take the time to do it again with him. But now seemed like as good a time as any. I had warned Ben before that it was 45 minutes long, but as we walked up and he saw the sign that states how long it is and he decided that was too long to spend and not to ride. :confused3 I think he thought I had been exaggerating about the 45 minutes and just could not believe an attraction would be that long. I was more than happy to skip it, and we turned right around.

We walked past the old Wonders of Life Pavilion, and I remembered that it was open as the Flower and Garden Festival Center. So I just had to check it out.

IMG_5211.jpg

Something you should know about me: I am completely fascinated by abandoned buildings. It started when I first read about ‘dead malls’, but my true interest is in abandoned theme parks. I had no idea how common these are! In fact, there is one only an hour or so from where I live. You can actually still see the roller coaster from the road! We visited it with friends last year, and it was one of my best days, ever!

IMG_1775.jpg

IMG_1701.jpg

The other thing you should know is that I loved the Wonders of Life. I loved Body Wars and Cranium Command. When my family visited Epcot in 1992, the pavilion was pretty new and I thought the hands-on displays and exhibits were so cool! I handled the closings of Horizons and World of Motion fairly well (I was probably the only 11 year old who insisted that her family go to Epcot first thing on the trip so she could ride those!), but when World of Life closed, I was so sad! Not to mention the fact that Food Rocks closed around the same time (maybe that’s why I can’t love Soarin’ the way most people do… ;) )
Anyway, that whole tangent was to explain why I needed to go inside WOL. I had to see what it looked like! And the answer? It looked like a dead mall. Very sad.

IMG_5212.jpg

They just had tons of potted plants blocking the places were stuff used to be!
There were areas set up for the festival, but it all felt very run down flea-markety. It was super interesting!
I wish I had taken more pictures, but I felt kinda weird. There were only a very few F&G Festival people in there, and I didn’t want to be the wacko taking pictures of ‘nothing’.

One thing we did find in one of the festival merchandise spots were prints of photographs by this photographer:

IMG_5213.jpg

We took the picture so we would remember to look him up when we got home. We loved his photos, and the fact that they were printed on canvases. We almost bought something then, but decided to wait so we could really figure out where we’d put the picture in our house before buying one!

Once back outside, we decided to visit one of our favorites- Mission:Space.

IMG_5215.jpg

A nice lady took our picture for us.

After, we could resist grabbing a Kim Possible FP. Even though we did all the missions last time, we knew there were alternate clues and we wanted to see them. What can I say? We are obsessive KP Mission nerds…

Now it was about noon and I was starving. Lunch wasn’t until almost 2 at Coral Reef, and I really didn’t want to miss it by eating somewhere earlier. But how would I make it that long without eating?

Great update!!! I knew as soon as I read the title I'd like it...I was obsessed with "I'm on a boat" for a long time...I have the whole Lonely Island album on my Ipod, but the Boat "song" was always my favorite! :cool1: Where did you find that Donald shirt??? I love it! :rotfl:

Anyway, back to Disney stuff! Glad you let yourself sleep in a little! Sometimes plans need to change in order to enjoy the day! I have a few really early mornings scheduled for my trip, and I'm wondering how many of them will actually work out! :rotfl:

That was so nice of you guys, to show that lost man where the ferry was! :thumbsup2 I'm not really sure how you could miss it when your at TTC, but I guess if you're not really familiar with it, you might not see it!

Good choice going to Epcot over MK! I have yet to see Ellen's Energy Adventure...I feel like I'm not really missing much! I don't know if I could sit through 45 minutes of it!

I love abandoned theme parks too, especially Disney ones! Have you ever read the blog where those people swim out to Discovery Island from Fort Wilderness? It's SO creepy!! I think there is a thread where someone snuck over to River Country too and took pics of that...so sad! :sad2:

I miss Food Rocks too!! :sad1: But I do love Soarin!

Yay, Mission Space!! KP missions look like so much fun, I definitely want to try one!

I love learning about all of the old attractions at Disney. I didn't go to Epcot as a child so I missed the pavilions that you mentioned but I've read about them before and I think I would have really enjoyed the body stuff, too!

You know, I hadn't even thought about taking the boat from the Poly to the MK. We're definitely going to have to do that on the honeymoon. Does it run at night, too? I bet it would be so pretty and peaceful. :cloud9:

Great update :thumbsup2 Love that you changed your plans and it looks like so far your morning has been lots of fun.

What KP mission did you do?

Loving your TR! And Ben's shirt is awesome! J's favorite character is Donald, so he would love something like that!

Good for you guys to sleep in! :thumbsup2. Most of our days are early mornings, so we'll see how many we can stand before we throw in the towel.

Speaking of abandoned theme parks, did you ever watch that show on the History Channel, "Life After People" (I think that's the name of it)? It was so creepy to see areas after people had left, like modern day ghost towns.

Can't wait to read more about your day at Epcot!

I was wondering how you guys were going to get up early the next morning after a late night, sometimes its nice to just relax at Disney (how dare I say that :rotfl:)

I tried Ellen's Energy ride once and boy oh boy never again...its just such a long attraction! I wish I could ride Mission Space and enjoy, but it makes me motion sick  I love hearing about how much people enjoy it, but I can barely do the tea cups :rotfl2:

Woah, you love "I'm on a boat", abandoned theme parks, and Food Rocks? Are we the same person? :goodvibes
Ben found the shirt at Target, of all places- just a day or two before we left.

I have seen that blog about Discovery Island- so creepy! We explore one more defunct location this trip (but we don't tresspass or anything- don't worry!)

The boat does run at night- but I'm not sure what time it stops. Definitely make a point of taking it- such a nice trip!

Great update :thumbsup2 Love that you changed your plans and it looks like so far your morning has been lots of fun.

What KP mission did you do?

I think it was Japan... it'll be coming up in the next update!

Loving your TR! And Ben's shirt is awesome! J's favorite character is Donald, so he would love something like that!

I have not seen "Life After People", but will definitely check it out! Sounds right up my alley...

We just couldn't get up early this day! But I am glad it worked out the way it did.

I love Mission: Space, but there is always a breif moment during the launch when I worry that this may be the time I get sick. Has never happened though- luckily!!

Part 2:
In desperate need of food, but still two hours away from our lunch ADR at Coral Reef, we did the only logical thing: get an appetizer somewhere in the World Showcase!

We made it to Mexico without anyone dying of starvation (barely), and checked out what La Cantina de San Angel had to offer. As we walked up, the place seemed pretty crowded. But we noticed that despite the lines of people at the first few registers, there were CMs at the end with no line at all! So we quickly ordered some nachos, a margarita, and a Dos Equis.
I turned around to try to find a seat, but all the tables were packed. Just as I was about to whine about it to Ben, a CM told me there was plenty of seating inside and opened the door for me. Sweet!
We sat next to a window, overlooking the lagoon. I really liked the atmosphere in here!

IMG_5217.jpg

IMG_5218.jpg

IMG_5219.jpg

IMG_5220.jpg

I guess I have a lot of pictures of Ben eating. Heh, sorry Ben!

The nachos were not fancy or anything (just basic ground beef, cheesy sauce and jalapeños), but they tasted good and were filling. Maybe a little too filling. How were we gonna be hungry enough for lunch after this? Well, walking and saving the world from a super villain might help. So off we went into the World Showcase.

On our way to Italy to pick up our Kimmunicator, we stopped in China for a Photopass. First we had to put our drinks down- wouldn’t want any pictures of people drinking in the World Showcase, would we? :rotfl:

Photo0022FourBySix.jpg

This is "princess and warrior" pose...

Photo0023FourBySix.jpg

When we arrived in Germany, I was thrilled to see the mini Flower & Garden Festival in the train set village.
IMG_5221.jpg

Even better was Rapunzel’s tower, complete with her singing the Incantation Song. I love Rapunzel and I love that song!
IMG_5222.jpg

We finally made it to Italy and got assigned to our mission in Japan
IMG_5223.jpg

We were disappointed because this was exactly the same as the last time we did the Japan mission. We were hoping to get a few different effects. Oh well, we zipped through it and it was about time for us to head back to Future World for lunch (still not very hungry…)

It was getting pretty toasty outside, so we took a shortcut through Innoventions to take advantage of the A/C. Since it was still a little early for lunch, we took a little sit break in there.
IMG_5224.jpg

Ben found a Donald topiary on the way to Coral Reef, so we needed a picture of them together!
IMG_5225.jpg

We checked in for lunch right on time and they handed us a pager. We had exactly enough time to take this:
IMG_5226.jpg

We were shown to our table and I was thrilled to see where we were sitting!
IMG_5230.jpg

We spent a ridiculous amount of time taking pictures of the tank… we just couldn’t get over how cool it was to sit right next to it!
IMG_5231.jpg

IMG_5236.jpg

IMG_5238.jpg

Despite the nachos, we managed to work up enough of an appetite to place our orders.
Ben had the rainbow trout, which was really tasty! It was served on some kind of beans, which neither of us liked very much.
IMG_5243.jpg

I ordered the mahi mahi, which was good but not amazing.
IMG_5244.jpg

Even though I was totally stuffed, I insisted that we split the Chocolate Wave, which we both loved!
I am so happy that we ate here, but even more happy that we had that wonderful table! The food was perfectly fine, but nothing special. The whole experience, though, was wonderful!

After lunch, we figured we would check out the Disney Visa character greet area. There was absolutely no one there, so we walked right in to meet Minnie and Goofy! Minnie immediately reached for my hand to see my ring… which struck me as odd; how did she know I had a ring from all the way across the room? I guess if I didn’t, she could have used that moment to yell at Ben for not giving me one!
We had a great time with these two…
IMG_5245.jpg

Minnie came over to me to tell me how nice Ben’s muscles were (Ben was pleased). She was really good at communicating! Then she set us all up into this pose:
IMG_5246.jpg

Which was pretty hilarious. She was awesome! Goofy just kinda stood there, but I have never cared for meeting Goofy, so I wasn’t expecting much. Incidentally, the CM in the room was the first person to comment on Ben’s shirt.
When we went to pick up our free 5x7 of the picture, the CMs there asked about it. Ben told them to look it up on You Tube and they asked if it was ‘viral’. I answered that it wasn’t exactly ‘Disney friendly’.

We were too full to head back to World Showcase (cause we all know we would have to eat and drink if we went back there…), but weren’t ready for a break. First we stopped for another picture:
Photo0034FourBySix.jpg

Then we headed out the International Gateway to catch the boat to Hollywood Studios!
IMG_5248.jpg

Haha, glad we worked that out :goodvibes
After reading your reply, I read again what I wrote and thought I sounded a little more grumpy than I actually felt!

Nope... you didn't sound grumpy!

Great updates! How nice of you to help that man find his way to his family!!!

I think I am with you on the Poly as a resort. I loved walking around..and would be tempted to stay..but then the rooms look glooomy to me.

Those nachos... dd just got back and said they had them several times. I even have a picture on my phone that she sent me...from a window inside that restaurant. She was quite impressed.

Isnt it fun to sit at CR right at the tank??? I loved that about our last trip....except when you get a gaggle of children who feel that the tank is open for everyone and there for they should be able to share the space at your table with you. :sad2:

Love all the pics!!!

Woah, you love "I'm on a boat", abandoned theme parks, and Food Rocks? Are we the same person?
Ben found the shirt at Target, of all places- just a day or two before we left.

I have seen that blog about Discovery Island- so creepy! We explore one more defunct location this trip (but we don't tresspass or anything- don't worry!)

LOL...well, to be fair, I'm more partial to Kitchen Kabaret than Food Rocks...I saw Kitchen Kabaret on my very first Disney trip when I was a kid, and that's one of the most vivid memories I have from that trip! I wish they would bring that back!

I've never actually gone to an abandoned theme park, I'm pretty sure there is one in CT that I've considered going to, but I think you might get arrested if you trespass there, so I probably won't be going there soon. :rolleyes1 Do you have any of those "Weird" books, like "Weird New England" or "Weird Massachusetts"? My DH and I have both of those and there are so many strange places we want to go, but it seems like most of them are illegal!

I'll have to come back and read your update later, I'm on my way to work...ugh! :sad2:

Love the Donald shirt, yeah that really isn't Disney friendly, but it is hilarious!

I am still going back and forth on getting a Disney Visa...any thoughts or advice whether to go for it :confused3

The photopass pictures in World Showcase are too cute!! I had to put my margarita down to snap a pic with Fiesta Donald in Mexico, but I thought it was because there was a character in it

I keep hearing the food is just ok at Coral Reef, but at least you got an awesome seat!! :goodvibes

OK, now I really need to search for that video this weekend on you tube and check it out!

I really need to get on the ball with my photopass pics...I'm jealous that you have yours already! They look great :)

The nachos really hit the spot (the margarita didn't hurt, either)! They are a great snack when you get hungry in the WS!

The park we went to was very easy to get in, but we did feel a little uneasy. It was probably the most non-legal thing I've ever done! We didn't stay long!
I would certainly not make a habit of doing it- I was way too nervous!
Those Weird travel books are really cool- but you're right; most of the places are not meant to be visited!

Love the Donald shirt, yeah that really isn't Disney friendly, but it is hilarious!

We got the Disney Visa because 1)we had an offer to get a $100 GC just for getting it. 2)We needed a second card because we mostly use AMEX, and lots of places don't take it. 3)rewards can be applied to our DVC annual dues.
The character greet was a nice bonus, as where the discounts we got in a couple of places.

OK, now I really need to search for that video this weekend on you tube and check it out!

I really need to get on the ball with my photopass pics...I'm jealous that you have yours already! They look great :)

Yes, you need to watch it!

I hardly edited my Photopass pics at all, and didn't add any borders. That's why I got it so quick!

We took the long boat ride all the way from Epcot to DHS. We were relying on boats for transportation quite a bit so far, and it was really nice! Even though it is a long trip, we enjoyed sitting outside and admired the Epcot area hotels. Boardwalk Villas, we will stay with you one day!

Once we got into the park, the first order of business was a Photopass pic to prove we were there.

Photo0038FourBySix.jpg

That’s our most pizzazz-y pose. Like it?

Ok, lots of people would head right off to a ride or a show or something. We make a beeline to buy me a Diet Coke on our way to the Writer’s Stop to get Ben a frozen cappuccino. As a note: we had a hard time finding iced coffee in WDW! We both drink a LOT of iced coffee, so we were sorely missing having it everywhere. (We live near Boston, where there are 17 Dunkin Donuts on every block. We are not used to being deprived!)
Anyway, we spend a lot of time here:

IMG_5250.jpg

I just loved sitting at this little counter looking out over the park!

Nice and refreshed, we headed over to Rock N’ Roller Coaster to take a spin with very little wait! Next was Tower of Terror, which we also got on very quickly. We had enough time in the hotel for Ben to strike a pose:
IMG_5252.jpg

In the boiler room, I spotted this playing card, which had never been there before:
IMG_5258.jpg

Huh.

Done with our trip to the Twilight Zone, we grabbed FP for RnRC, in case the wait got longer later. Then it was off to my second favorite place in the Studios:
IMG_5253.jpg

We don’t feel the need to eat at 50’s Prime Time again, but we really enjoy sitting at the bar with some beers! I had a Yeungling, and Ben had a Blue Moon.
Our favorite part about theme park bars? Ordering another round ‘to go’! We did just that, and then just wandered out into the park.
IMG_5254.jpg

IMG_5255-1.jpg

I love that we get envious looks from dad-types when we’re just hanging out drinking beers.

While we were wandering, we found this billboard, which I thought was so neat!
IMG_5259.jpg

Then it was another couple spins on our favorite rides before heading out.

The park was closing, and we thought we’d squeeze in a bit of time at Disney Quest (since we have those Water Park Fun n’ More passes, and all!)
So how are we gonna get to DtD? Given the nautical nature of our transportation so far today, I thought we should go to a resort with boat service to DtD. Port Orleans does, and I was pretty sure Saratoga Springs did, too. Since the Saratoga bus was waiting at the stop, we climbed aboard and off we went!

Once we got there, I made the stupid assumption that the first stop would be at the main area. I knew this was a big place, and that it had internal bus stops. But in my head, there was no question that the first stop would have to be at the lobby. It wasn’t.

We had no clue where we were or where we were going. Ben found someone to ask, and it turned out that we were waaaay far away from any boat to DtD. But we could take a bus. So we waited. A while. And finally got on a bus and finally got to DtD. By now we were angry-hungry. Not good! This was transportation snafu #1. How many do you think there will be total? (Hint: it’s a lot!)

We kept our tempers in check just long enough to get here:

I got a BBQ chicken pizza and Ben got a turkey club sandwich of some kind. We loved the food and ate every bite!

Once done with our meals, we were much happier. Phew! We also had a couple of hours to check out DQ, so that is where we headed. The one thing I wanted to show Ben was the Pirates of the Caribbean game. It’s one of my favorite things, and it is part of the reason why I was disappointed in Toy Story Mania. When I first read about TSM, I thought the new ride would be something as immersive and fun as this Pirates attraction. The real thing just wasn’t as good as what I pictured, I guess.

Anyway, back to DQ: Ben was as impressed by Pirates as I hoped, and we kicked butt! Once down with that, we did the Aladdin Magic Carpet thing which was ok, but the virtual reality mask hurt my head SO bad! We thought about checking some other stuff out, but we were pretty tired so we just headed out.

An AKL bus was waiting at the stop, and we were back in our room by 9:30 or so. The next day was our Backstage Magic tour, and we had to be at Epcot for 7:45 (I thought…)

We love using the boats as our transportation as much as we can. If we're going to Epcot, we always take a bus to DHS and then the boat to Epcot....we love sitting outside and just enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the tip on the frozed capp...good to know...I put it in my notepad:worship:

WPE is hands down our favorite place to eat at DTD...we have never been disappointed!

Im loving the trip report so far! I never knew of frozen cappuccinos in the writers stop, but will definitely be making stops there in the future :goodvibes
