I hope this makes sense! Tomorrow I am booking a long weekend for May 2016. I currently have 49 points but need 72 for my stay. Obviously I need to borrow from my 2016 points but I am waiting for a one day wl to come through for my November 2015 trip but I'll need 8 more points to switch. The question is how do I book the May trip online but leave 8 points for my wl? Tia! I hope it's easy!

Call member services to modify your waitlist to allow borrowing.

I have done that but I need to keep 8pts from 2015 points. Can I do that when I book the May trip?

There are two ways to do this, and both involve arbitrarily booking a room to tie up some points or borrow some points in advance.

The first way is try to tie up 8 of your 2015 UY points by booking one night in a studio somewhere. Unfortunately nothing costs 8 points in any resort or season anymore. Years ago OKW studios were sometimes 8 points. The closest option now is an OKW studio Sun-Thu during Adventure + Choice seasons for 10 points. You would cancel this room after you book your trip tomorrow, and then have 10 points left from your 2015 UY.

To get more precise and save exactly 8 points, you would have to fiddle with dates using a point calculator and find a reservation that uses 8 more points than the one you plan to book tomorrow. So book something that costs 80 points tonight, and borrow 31 points to book it. Then cancel that reservation right afterwards. Those 31 borrowed points will stay in your 2015 UY and will get used up first tomorrow when you book your trip. That will leave 8 points left in your account.

Now that I wrote this up, I'm curious as to why you need to keep 8 points in your 2015 UY, heh.

quite simple, when you borrow to make your reservation borrow 8 more than you need to. when you book make sure it uses all the borrowed points. if it doesn't call and get MS to switch points until all borrowed points are used.

Oh man Dec is the hardest UY to figure out. So your November trip is in 2014 UY so you need to leave 8 points in 2015 UY so the wait list can borrow them if needed.

So what I said before should work, borrow 31 from your 2016 UY, use 31 borrowed and 41 from 2015 UY to make your May 2016 reservation and leave 8 2015 UY points available.

The system should use borrowed points before points that can be banked but make sure sure sure you check which points it has used when you make the reservation and if you are not sure call MS and get them to make sure all borrowed points were used first.

No need to book dummy rooms.

Can you borrow points now without booking a reservation? I thought you must book a room in order to borrow points.

I just tested it out, and as I thought, you cannot borrow more points than what the room requires. So a dummy room is indeed needed.

Hmmmmm maybe I should call ms? I don't want to mess it up lol

yes you can, i do this frequently

Do you have more than one contract? I believe that is the only way you can borrow more and still leave some current points.

With one contract you need to do the dummy room.

Just one contract. So if I have a dec UY with 49 points and I want to save 8 points the best way seems to do a dummy room say at AKL value room for 9 points in my 2016 UY which would be January. Then book my may 2016 trip. Then cancel the dummy room to recoup the 9 points that will be saved for my WL? Am I missing any steps?

TIA!!!!

November 2015 is in your 2014 use year. Do you currently have any 2014 points? Or will you need to borrow the 8 points from your 2015 use year for the trip in November?

May 2016 is in your 2015 use year. Since you said you need to borrow points from 2016, I'll assume that your 49 points are in your 2015 use year.

If that's correct, then you need to book that AKV value room in your 2015 use year with 9 points from your 2015 allotment.

Book an AKV value room for a date sometime prior to Nov 30, 2016 (which is in your 2015 UY)- but more than 31 days out so when you cancel the points don't go into holding. Then book your May 2016 stay which will require borrowing and after that is booked cancel the AKV value room.

I have no 2014 points this would be out of my 2015 UY. So I think booking the jan 2016 value room would be the correct way to go then canceling as soon as I have the may trip booked.
Thank you so much for the help! The UY can become so confusing when you are "borrowing"! Especially for a DVC noob like me! Thank you all!!!
