My DD and I will be visiting NYC for a day and will need to take the subway, rather than walk 1.5 miles (not that we can't, it just takes more than 30 minutes, and the subway will take less than 10). I've already planned the route and know which train to take, where to board and depart. My question is about the MetroCard.

Must each passenger have a MetroCard or can they be shared? I'm only planning on taking the subway one-way and walking to our next destination.

If I must spend $4.50 per card I will lose $4.50 by not getting on another train or bus. If force to, we could take another ride, but it really wouldn't be necessary.

If its not a Monthly card, yes, you can swipe it, go thru and hand it to your daughter.
Monthly: you have to wait 15 minutes between swipes...crazy, but thats how it works.......

Its a GREAT city to visit, have fun! Keep your personal effects close to your body and nothing flashy....its the holiday season and times are tough.....more "trash" out there looking to take advantage......

Why would you lose $4.50 by having two cards? You can buy two single ride cards if you want, $2.25 each at the subway.

How are you planning to get BACK? Won't you need to take the subway or bus back?

Thanks. The MTA website is confusing about the cards available for purchase and I can find where it clearly states that it costs $4.50 for a card, but makes no mention of a single ride pass. Two single cards would be perfect for us.

:D It will be mostly a walking tour. Many of our destinations are 10-15 minutes apart (walking, according to GoogleMaps), some even less. This one leg would take twice as long as any other to walk. We could do it, but it would limit our time to explore.

Just don't expect your journey to take only 10 minutes on subway, especially if you're coming on a weekend. There is constantly construction going on, trains are always delayed. If it's nice out, I would honestly just walk. But that's your choice. Just don't expect it to take 10 minutes only.

Also, you can get 2 single rides, but last I checked, you can only get them from the machines, but it's easy to figure out.

My son put $$ on his card-swiped it and I walked thru, then he swiped it again and my DH walked thru, then he swiped it again for himself:)

Yes, the ride itself may be 10 minutes, but waiting for the train to come, any delays or congestion, any you could be waiting 20-40 minutes.
