Hi all. DVCV here. I have not made a booking yet with my new DVC contract. We purchased 100 points with August UY. We currently have 2018 points that I am going to call to book my "welcome home" for September 2019. We will get August 2019 points and i plan on banking those to 2020.

My question is this:

We are planning a vacation in May of 2020 and will need 280 points. Like i said, i am banking the 2019 points but since i won't have my 2020 points yet can i still borrow from 2021 (and i guess 2020) to get to the 280 that i need? only leaving me with 20 points from 2021 and then can i borrow from 2022 to vacation in 2021. I know all of this would go away if i had 100 more points at AKV but we could only get 100 direct points at this time. I hope to see 100 on the resale market before 2022.

Please let me know if i am wrong on the banking and borrowing.

thanks!

May 2020 would be your 2019 UY, UY rolls over in August for you. So you could max bank 2018 points into 2019 and borrow 2020 points into 2019; you can only bank from the immediate previous or borrow from the immediate next. Therefore, the theoretical max you could have is 300 points at your disposal: 2018, 2019, and 2020 points. However, it appears you are trying to book for September 2019 which if you bank your 2018 points (which DVC should allow since you bought direct) you would start eating into that maximum 300 you could have for the May 2020 booking.

Also my guess is you are going for a Studio in September 2019, just be aware that DVC will try to do what it can for a Welcome Home visit; however, it is likely not to be the cheapest views or resorts available considering it is 3-4 months out. If you look at cash availability for DVC Villas you can sort of gauge what they could possibly do for you (in terms of getting you rooms not currently available on the DVC booking side).

Don't bank the 2019 points if you want to use them to pay for a May 2020 vacation.

With an August use year, a May 2020 vacation falls within your 2019 use year. To pay for that stay, you would use 2019 points, points that were banked into 2019 from 2018, and you may borrow points from 2020.

You may not use 2021 points to pay for your May 2020 vacation.

Okay, so i can bank the 2018 points to 2019 (guide said since it is a new purchase but banking deadline has passed that i could still bank) and borrow from 2020? So, that means no using points this year for September/October vacation. Well, maybe an AP rate will be released soon.

Yes, if you purchase direct, they will bank the first year's points for you even if the banking deadline has passed. It's a courtesy they offer to those who purchase direct (and sometimes, albeit rarely, to resale purchasers).

Hope you can snag an AP discount for your fall trip.

Until you get the full understanding of UY, throw away any calendar when you are considering booking. Your new calendar runs from Aug 1 to July 31 and add the Aug 1 year to the date. So your new points are Aug 2018 points and are good until July 31, 2019 unless you bank them. Then they are good from Aug 1, 2019 until Jul 31, 2020.

Maybe you can help me understand something. I’m looking at September UY contracts. Some of them (resale) have the 2019 points available with them. Can I use those 2019 points to book a September 2020 trip? Should I look for an October UY so the trip falls in the UY window? Thanks

Sept 2019 points are good from Sept 1, 2019 through Aug 31, 2020. If you want to use them from Sept 1, 2020 through Aug 31, 2021, you'd need to bank them no later than April 30, 2019. We have a Sept UY for most of our points and a small single contract with a Dec UY. We'll transfer between them from time to time, but most of the time We'll use that Sept contract for our Sept/Oct trips, plus our May trips. Last year we went in early Oct. This year we are going at the end of Sept into Early Oct to get one more trip out of our APs. Sept UY works great for F&W trips.
