Help with fast pass

Help how does fast pass work? I have tried to read up on it and I just can't grasp the idea. I know there is a separated fast pass line, but is it ride specific. I read everyone saying to always have an active fast pass???? I am making my first trip to disney Aug18-26th.

yes they are ride specific. For instance if you want one for The Haunted Mansion, 1st you insert your ticket into a fastpass machine located at the Haunted Mansion and a fastpass ticket comes out with atime to come back to the attraction. At that time you get into the fastpass holder line (moves much faster). Also on the fastpass you have received will be a time listed when you may get another fastpass. So you can get one for another attraction or the same attraction after the time listed.

Note that there are a finite number of fastpasses per attraction each day and eventually the machines will be shut down for the day (unless this has changed since we were there 2 yrs ago)

This is because there is a time inteval before you can get your next fastpass. If you are eligible to get your second fastpass and procrastinate, that will push back the time you can get your third fastpass.

*The time interval is never more than 2 hours 5 minutes (as of May 2005), never hold you back more than 5 minutes after the come back time for your last fastpass ride, can be as little as 5 minutes absolute (before or after getting a Lights Motors fastpass but not both) and can vary unadvertisedly and unpredictably for different rides with shorter inter-fastpass intervals on less busy days.

The finite number of fastpasses issued (and then the machines shut down) still exists.
