(I think this could fall under the budget thread because I am trying to re-use an old phone due to the expense of an iPod touch).

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could help me with some technical advice. I have a friend who really can't afford an iPod Touch. However, some of the Apps I have on my iPhone would be really useful to them.

I have an old iPhone 2G (I think, the one before 3G and 3GS). Last night, I tried to sync it with iTunes. It had the old SIM card in it and the old software. iTunes said it needed an update, but first I tried to sync it. I synced some songs, but most of the Apps needed 3.2.1 or whatever one of the recent updates was. (When I first plugged it on and hooked it up to iTunes it said it would only work with emergency services, then it wanted me to activate a new phone account. I told it no and then it let me sync, but like I said before, it wouldn't sync most of the Apps my friend wanted because it wasn't updated). However, when I unplugged it and took out the SIM card, it did work, just said no SIM.

Next, I updated it to try to get the Apps I wanted on it. After the update, iTunes won't let me do anything with the phone except for activation. If I cancel that, it tells me goodbye. I can't sync anything.

I looked up jailbreak and unlocking, but don't know if that would solve the problem and it was so confusing (even though it claimed the steps were simple) that I don't know that I could do it anyway.

Does anybody know a solution to this? It is really frustrating to own a devicve that should be able to do everything other than make a phone call. I feel like I still should be able to use it to give to someone if I want and I know people have been successful in doing this, but somehow I have messed it up. HELP!!!

for the 2G model:
To continue using your original iPhone without active cellular service, leave the inactive SIM card in place. You will be able to use the iPhone as you would an iPod touch (Wi-Fi only, no cellular service) as long as you keep the SIM with which it was last used, even if you update or restore the operating system of the original iPhone.
Activation for an original iPhone requires that its SIM card stays with that iPhone. If the original iPhone displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen, you can use that SIM card to re-activate the iPhone, regardless of whether that SIM has a wireless service account/tariff still associated with it.
To re-activate an original iPhone that displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen:

  1. Reinsert the SIM card used when the original iPhone was activated and had a valid wireless service account/tariff.
  2. Connect the original iPhone to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.
If that SIM was previously valid and used with that original iPhone, iTunes will re-activate the iPhone, but without any cellular service.
