My mom is having acid reflux so bad she can barely speak.

What can she take to relieve this?

Help please!

the best OTC med would be Zantac. Milk will also help as will a peppermint.

Hope she feels better soon!

Like the previous poster mentioned, something like that would give immediate relief. Rolaids, Tums, Maalox would be good. Also, Prilosec is the best thing for Acid Reflux. For me, it only takes about a half hour to kick in.

Quick help would be pepcid complete chewable. Have her start a daily acid reducer. Tell her not to lay down flat. It makes it worse. Have her prop up some.

Is she taking prescription medicine? It would help a lot to see a gastroenterologist. I was told that chocolate, caffeine, fried foods and mint upset the condition.

Besides over the counter stuff it also helps to:

Not eat about 3 hours before bedtime

Avoid spicy foods, foods containing acid like orange juice, peppermint, any kind of mint and chocolate

Sleep with a couple pillows to keep the head higher

I am beyond the OTC stuff now. I take protonix and I have never had another maalox pill yet.

Has she had an endoscopy if it is that bad? I had that too.

Hope she feels better soon. Blessings to her.

She had Forbidden Chocolate ice cream about 4 hours ago. She took a Tagament an hour before she went to sleep...she says it has never been this bad.

I read somewhere that apples can help so I gave her some slices.

After my scope and other tests, they put me on Aciphex. It was good to start, but expensive even with my insurance so I switched to OTC as soon as I could.

Oh Yeah, onion straws... really get to me. It is no fun being old.

SIL had terrible heart burn but could take nothing due to her pregnancy!
She did 4 months sleeping upright in a lazyboy.

check webmd for authentic remedies. But it will probably just say what has already been posted.

It needs to be attended to since it is stomach acid getting to where it should not be. Sometimes an upper GI is prescribed to check for problems. If it is so bad she can not talk, she should see a doctor soon.

I take Gaviscon for immediate relief. I've found it to work the best, and fast:thumbsup2

I take Zantac extra strength, every pm.

For the pain, it won't hurt to take a little tylenol--liquid works well. I've also been known to mix a little Chlorseptic spray with some mylanta, but its not labled to be taken that way. I'm just sayin I do it:rolleyes1

Good luck

 Nothing? According to my doc, I can have Pepcid, Zantac, Tums or Mylanta.

Before pregnancy, I found Aciphex and Prilosec to work well for me. Also chewable papaya tablets are great.

If it is so bad she can't speak she needs to see a gastro doc. Until then avoid spices, caffeine, alcohol, too much fibre, don't lie down after eating, sleep semi-upright, take the strongest otc available that won't mess with other meds. Please check this as some do. Not sure what that is at this point since I have had a script for so long. Ask the pharmacist.

Milk is a bandaid that will hurt, not help, in the long run and apples are very hard to digest for people with digestive issues. Unles it's apple sauce. Great for people without though.

Hope she feels better soon. I know what it's like.

Ya that's odd. I have so many problems on and off that I had to talk my obgyn about what I could and couldn't take if I got pregnant and zantac and aciphex were just fine even during pregnancy.

at the end I was popping Pepcid like candy... I buy the generic kind at walmart for 60pills for $4. I'm cheap and they work :thumbsup2 Tell your mom to pick some up.. there is no reason to suffer!

Oh wait another thing.... is she sure its heartburn? It seems I was having gall bladder attacks while pregnant the last time. is she having pain in her middle back? that was one of my symptoms.

I got a list of "safe meds during pregnancy" from my doctor's website, and the four I named were on the list. Anything else, I'd want to ask her and make sure, but I'd bet I could take other stuff if I needed to. Pepcid has been working fine for me so far, though, and I hadn't taken any reflux meds for a while before the pregnancy started. I have a pretty mild case. Of course, now my stomach's all squished, the reflux is getting bad. :headache:

I take cheapo generic Pepcid, too. :thumbsup2

this might sound weird but for me milk made it worse. Dr. told my for fast releif try drinking a pop/soda not a flavored type just reg. coke diet coke spirte. the acid it the pop/soda will eat other acid back down. it might stig abit but it works for me. I had it so bad it would come out my nose:scared1: like i said weird but works.

In addition to the various medicatons people have mentioned, make sure she drinks a full glass of water or two and sits up for a long time before going back to bed. The water will help wash the acid down and activate the medicaton properly.

Does she get it often?
I did...for about 6 months. Finally bit the bullet and went for the Upper GI series testing..I have GERD and now take a pill ( Periot? Pariot? can never remember!) every other day and have not had ONE epsiode since!
It's a long term fix if she is having it often. It's pretty miserable..

Thanks everyone for the help.

It is definitely reflux...it makes total sense because I know what she had eaten prior.

She is sitting up now and going to take a Chloroseptic for the pain in her throat. She has most of her voice back now.
