Do I want to buy flat cut or point cut corned beef? Thanks! :thanks:

I personally think a flat cut is much better. I find with a flat cut all the fat in on one side, where as a point cut someone has it right through it. I will only buy flat's. I can't wait for the sales to start because I will buy several. It's a favorite of our family

We always buy flat cut for our St. Pats party. We boil half of them and bake the other half in Guiness and brown sugar!! Yum!

Point cut is cheaper. Flat cut has more "useable" meat. Round cut is best :) imo.

I buy whatever looks best at the store. You want to see the fat mostly on one side rather than throughout the beef. If it's thru the middle, you are going to lose a lot of weight to fat when you slice it so the cost savings in a point cut is lost.

Wow, thanks for all the helpful replies! I will go ahead and buy flat cut.

And, I would also love to see the recipe for the guinness/brown sugar method. :flower3:

we just had a flat corn beef last night, great peice of meat, but it was so salty  you could only eat a few peices :sad2: i ended up throwing about half of it away. i bought it from aldis, never again.

i put brown sugar, garlic, soy sauce, pepper on steak to marinate, yummy.:cutie:

Did you rinse it really well before you cooked it? I buy mine from Aldis and have found if you don't rinse it well before you cook it, its too salty. I also throw the seasoning packet out and just cook it in the crockpot without any seasonings. I usually season the cabbage and potatoes that I serve with it and it makes it not as salty.

I can picture Homer Simpson drooling while saying this! LOL!

Beef & Guiness
4lb Corned beef brisket
1C brown sugar
1 Guiness Draught in bottle

preheat oven to 300
rinse beef completely in water and pat dry
Place brisket in roasting pan, rub brown sugar on the corned beef to coat entire beef, icluding bottom.
Pour beer around and gently over the beef to moisten the sugar
Cover with tin foil and bake for 2 1/2 hours
Wait 5 min before slicing

If you're feeling very ambitious, you can add veggies right into the pan during the last hour of cooking. You may need to add a little more beer with your veggie. If you do this final step, reward yourself with a Guiness for being so fancy!

I am pure stock Irish and always go with the flat but will buy a few points to use at other times for make other dishes with, IE hash.

You must always rinse the meat very well!!!! Can't wait for the sales!!!!
