Hi -

Thanks, in advance, for your advice. My husband and I want to deposit points for an exchange next year at the Hyatt High Sierra Lodge. Right now our situation is a bit unpredictable because we may be moving and switching jobs sometime within the next year, so although we could book something for a decent-sounding week next summer, if we are in new jobs we may end up having to cancel. Can someone decribe the penalties that we would incur for cancellation? We have a December use year. Let's say we use 160 points for the exchange, borrowed from 2004's point allotment and confirm an exchange for next summer, and then we cancel in say, January or February of next year. What would happen to those points and what usage would still be possible with them?

Thanks.

There are stricter guidelines for cancellation and they vary resort and/or which program they belong to. In the handbook supplement there's a chart on pages 26-27 with details. Most of them say they have to be used within one year of cancellation date and then have additional restrictions based on how far out you cancel. You also have to pay the exchange fee again.

One factor that's the same for all of them is that the points can no longer be used to stay at DVC resorts and can't be banked or borrowed.

Once you convert DVC points into an Interval International week, you must use (or lose) an Interval International week. Your points cannot be converted back to DVC points or to Reservation Points.

You can cancel your specific, confirmed Interval International week. As long as you follow the documented rules and restrictions (in the DVC member guide) and you pay another exchange fee, you can book a replacement week.

I'll agree and add that if you cancel, you lose your exchange fee. You then have one year to use the replacement deposit. It sounds like you should wait unti your certain or maybe rent your points. You could always get something in summer as you get closer to the time and your plans are more certain.
