HELP, what color would you paint the cabinets in a bathroom with a 1980s blue bathtub? Pictures !

I don't mind the color of the tub and the sink as much... it is that YELLOW that is abhorrant!!!! Hahaha!!!
If the walls are a problem, with painted old wallpaper...
I would see if some kind of wallboard covering might work.
The photo that was posted is on the right track.

Okay, that blue, small room, no window... WHITE, all the way.
White cabinets and walls...
Blue accents, maybe with a bit of the tan/taupe.
Too much tan with the blue would say 80's...
Blue and white is always clean, classic.

Don't take this the wrong way, but that color scheme is atrocious. What were they going for? I'd do the cabinets and walls in white and see about replacing the countertop with something neutral. If the countertop isn't possible I'd look for some accessories to pull in those colors.

I need to do a quick paint job on my kids bathroom. I keep thinking up color schemes, then I remember that the bathtub is that lovely 1980s country blue color. The floor is generic beige tile.

We won't discuss the fact that it is currently painted yellow with kelly green accents. I will try to add a picture later, I thought I had one on my phone but don't.

What color would you put on the walls and cabinets?

White would be the 'only' color I'd use for the cabinets. I'd use a little more leverage with the walls - if you like dark, a Williamsburg type blue - if light, a blush blue/white.
The tub color boxes you in, and I hate being boxed in to one color scheme, but you don't seem to have a choice.
The yellow and kelly green would have to go.

But on a side note - in my current house we had a peach tub (what were people thinking in the 80s?)

I'll tell you exactly what we homeowners were thinking!!! It was definitely the 'thing' to have colored bathroom/kitchen fixtures/appliances!! Just as today - there are trends, right, and most people jump on the bandwagon because it's IN!!!
We had avocado green. There was also a harvest yellow.
Remember shag rugs??

That's just the way it was, and if you think about it, there are always trends, and then something else comes along (think clothing also) There's some awful fashion trends out there right now!! :crazy2:

Changes make people buy new things - is what makes the world go round!! :D

I agree with the others on white - or a really light gray (I use Benjamin Moore's Cement Gray throughout my house, terrible name, perfect gray).

My only bathroom features a harvest gold tub/shower surround and toilet. Harvest gold. And I totally overlooked it when we bought the house - not even sure how that happened (I'm guessing I figured we'd gut it pretty quickly). Eight years later and it's still harvest gold. I use a white shower curtain to cover it - really tones it all down - in your case, I'd consider doing an extra long shower curtain and putting it up as close to the ceiling as possible.

Yes, exactly. My house was built in 2014. When my kids are old enough to buy a home of their own, they may look at our house and say "Ugh...that house is so 2014...what were our parents thinking??" LOL

For OP, even though I love the '80s, I'd agree white is the easy button answer.

I'm the one already looking at today's trends and wishing they would fade away fast. Personally I do not enjoy that all of the widely available choices today are the same, same, same that are featured on every HGTV show. I don't care what the trends are, I prefer white kitchen appliances because they feel cleaner to me. I don't care for shiplap, distressed farmhouse, farmhouse sinks! or most of the modern hardwood flooring choices. I'm putting off some home reno because I cannot find options I want to install.

Yep, this house was built in the early 80s, it must have been a show piece at that time. We have harvest gold in another bathroom. The base layer of wallpaper in the kitchen was orange, brown, and green and I think we had the pink and blue bird wallpaper a previous poster was talking about in my son's bedroom.

I like to think that the original conversation about that bathroom went something like this:

"Hey Mom, Dad said we could paint the bathroom."
"I guess you can, we can go pick out a color this weekend."
"That's OK, Mom, we already painted it."

Unfortunately, it's too well done to have been painted by a kid. It's the one paint job in the house that looks like an adult did it.

I agree, I can't stand stainless steel. My stuff is already old and distressed looking, I don't need to make it that way on purpose. Shiplap is OK, but it's everywhere. I love a lot of the hardwood floor colors available now, but like you I think they'll be dated in a few years. The only thing trendy I play with is paint colors. Paint is cheap and relatively easy to change.

White cabinets, light grey walls.

I feel your pain. Our house had a similar bathroom when we moved in - tub, sinks and toilet were green. :crazy2: It was the first room we renovated!

I'd do white for the cabinets and a light gray on the walls. Get towels/shower curtain with blue, gray and white and navy blue rugs on the floor. If you're keeping the "chair rail" I would do gray on the bottom and white on the top.

I would do the walls light gray, the trim in white and the cabinets in a couple shades darker gray. Counter top I would do white and then look at some of the spray paints that give a stone look and then seal it really, really well. Gray and white towels and you are set!

That color scheme wasn't "in" during ANY decade. Blue I could deal with, that green I could maybe deal with, but both together in a small space? Ugh.

Maybe there's a paint color that has an aqua that would tone down the green? Or a really pale green-blue that could tie them in together?

Very light beige for the cabinets and bright white walls. Bring in framed art with blue, green, and beige colors to round out the space.

I didn't see that counter top in the thread before, are you keeping it that color? You could work with it since it is a kid's bathroom and do something a little fun and funky. If it was me and I wasn't able to change out the tub, sink and counter I would try to work with it maybe something like this color scheme

Frost white for the walls and a light grey for the cabinet. If the sink cutout is oval, a replacement from Home depot is like $50-ish if I remember right.
