My husband was just given a list of choices for his next assignment. We are discussing the merits of each place. I would love to have some insight from both military and non military that live in these areas, have lived there or have traveled through there.

Choices are:
Ft. Meade , MD
Washington ,DC(would want to live on the VA side-Fairfax County)
Norfolk, VA
Ft. Hood, TX
Yongsan, Korea
Stuttgart, Germany

We have 2 DDs ages 11 and 9. We homeschool right now but good schools in the area are important in case we decide to send them back to a traditional school. My daughters are dancers so any info about good dance schools would also be appreciated.

Bring on the good and bad....PLEASE!

When I glanced at the title of the thread I thought it said HELP US PICK OUR SEAT ASSIGNMENT. I was thinking to myself "how does this person make it through life if they need strangers help choosing a seat on an airplane." :rotfl:

Really, I can read.....just not too well.

Sorry, I can't be much help on any of those places since I have never visited them. I wish you the best of luck on your new adventure.

LOL!:rotfl: I like that one! I need help but not that much help!

I don't know how many times I have glanced at a title and opend up a thread only to find out I totally had it wrong! We all have those moments.

Thanks! It should be a dramatic move this time. Oldest DD is starting to not want to move anymore!

I have no advice either, but just have to say, that is hilarious!

I do love the northern VA area, but it is very expensive.

I live close to No. VA and it is very expensive.

I think Germany would be wonderful. My mom lived in Nuremberg when she was younger (military family). You could see a great deal of Europe too.

Good luck with your decision.

In Hampton, across form Norfolk. Hmmm.. Navy I would guess your hubby! Maybe Army.

Lets see, we have the good and bad here. Virginia Beach is a nice area, but is also a tourist place, especially the beach/strip area. Tourist shops but also the Atlantic ocean! Portsmouth and Suffolk are more country, Chesapeake is growing city and Norfolk & Va. Bech can be huge by some standards. There is truely something for everyone here.

We are an area of 7 cities, Hampton, Newport News on the Peninsula and then Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach & Suffolk on the Southside.

People commute both directions to work. Lots of Navy live on this side, lots in Norfolk due to Navy housing, and then some of the other cities also due to the kind of house, neighborhood, schools that they want. If you want to PM me, I can get you to another site that has a message board about this area, and at least one more you list.

The area has good schools and bad schools, as all areas do. Housing in VA is high right now. I have owned my house for almost 20 years. Bought it in the 60's almost 20 years ago. Very slow climb until the last 3 years. Now near 170. It is mellowing out now, but check records if you can on when bought and sold last so you can see the jump. You can look online at the city sites. New housing areas can go anywhere into the 500,000, but you can also still find 100,000. (Sounds high to me, but...) With all 4 branches of military here, houses do go pretty quick! There are also dupleses, townhouses, condos jsut about everything.

It is wet wool blanket wrapped around you humidity in the summer, but we have great spring & falls. We can get Hurricanes, but are pretty proteced here by the Carolina coast jutting out. Very little snow here but can get lots less then 45 mins north of us.

The area is full of history. Williamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown is about 45 minutes away from me, DC is about 3 1/2 hours.

Ask questions and I'll see if I can tell you more. kat

I would pick Stuttgart in a heartbeat. My ex was stationed in Bamberg when we were first married and I loved Germany and didn't want to leave. It's a beautiful country with wonderful people and great food.

Stuttgart! Our next assignment is Belgium and we can't wait. Gotta love that overseas time!:thumbsup2

My first choice would be Germany, followed by Korea. What a great experience for the kids!

If you decided to stay stateside, I'd go with the DC area. Expensive, but so much at your doorstep!

I would say Stuttgart.

Your kids are at a good age for learning. While there you could have them take immersion courses in the language.

More important, there would be the ability to take a lot of weekend or short trips around Europe. Don't tell the kids, but this would be very educational and would help them a lot in the future.

I know when I was in the Army I really took advantage of my three years in Germany.

I would be tempted to take the Germany assignment just for the chance to live in/visit Europe.

Another vote for Germany. What a great opportunity to live in Europe for a while. I had a roommate in college who had lived all over the world (her dad was military). I only wish that someday I can travel to and experience all the places she went to - all before she was 18.

We are leaning heavily towards Germany. It is such an opportunity! When else will I have 3 years to explore Europe with my family?! Our main concern is the exchange rate right now.Not quite in our favor! Our oldest is very distraught over having to leave her guinea pig with her grandparents but the chance to study ballet in Europe is helping to win her over. Along with being able to go to Disney Paris! We might even be able to swing Hong Kong and Tokyo from there.

My only other concern about Germany is my older DD will be going into 10th grade the summer we return from Europe. That may be a really hard transition. Not so bad as later in high school, but bad enough.

It is great to have so many choices and I guess I do take for granted all the places I have seen in the 14 years my DH has been in the Army.

But...we have to weigh all the options and look at all the choices before we decide. And at this point in his career all I seem to be able to focus on is how many more tiimes do we have to move before he retires?!

I moved in 10th grade from Vermont to North Carolina. One of my best friends from high school moved from Germany to NC in 10th grade as well. We both had personalities where it was easy for us to make friends, and we both did well. And with your daughter, if you come back to the states to another base, there will be lots of other kids who have faced similar situations. There is always the option to home school.

I am jealous!

I'd have to agree with Germany. We've had a few people we know live there and loved it. However, I would say no to Korea, another friend of ours was there and it was rough. I think the culture difference is a lot to deal with for some. Oh, and for anything stateside I'd have to say Norfolk. My brother started and ended his career there, with the Navy. He liked it. Plus I think there are just a lot of options for what you want there.

Either way, good luck!

I wouldn't pick Fort Meade. They were just in the news recently about how bad the veterans are being treated in the hospitals and how bad the conditions are there. Also I thought I heard they were talking about closing that base and moving everyone to Aberdeen Proving Grounds in MD.

DC/VA are too congested & both have high costs of living.

My brother was in Norfolk in the Navy. It was nice.

Not sure about the rest. I would probably choose Germany. I've heard such wonderful things about Germany.

Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your replies! It looks like Germany is winning hands down so far! The only person I have talked to that has told us not to go is my father! He just doesn't want me taking his grandbabies so far away from him!

Keep 'em coming people! I love how I can count on Dissers to be there when you need an opinion!

Okey doke. My .02$. Of the places you've listed I've been to:
Stuttgart
Ft. Hood
MD/VA

My hubby was stationed in the DC area for several years. It's not bad... but it IS expensive... speaking from a cultural perspective it's an awesome area what with the Smithsonian, the National Zoo, it's all very international. I enjoyed the time we were there...however we didn't have kids for much of it. The schools are pretty good IF you're in the right area. Also the wrong areas are awfully high in crime. Still, depending on where you are it's not bad...if you end up there my best piece of advice...live OUTSIDE the capital beltway!
Ft. Meade: Tho' we have never been stationed there we were close to it and I had friends who were there. It's not a bad assignment, decent housing on base, close to Baltimore and DC, decent enough schools...but.. the locals aren't as nice to soldier families as they could be I've heard. On the plus side, they have a good PX/COmmissary last I heard.

My hubby and I were both stationed in Stuttgart, Germany...but that was a loong time ago. I'm leaning towards this, esp. if this is not your last assignment. If this your last tour think hard on it, it's hard to transition out of the military into the civvie world from overseas. That being said, I don't know how much it's changed in ...uhm... 15 years but when I was there I LOVED it. A very good experience for your kids, they're of an age to appreciate it.

Youngsan, my hubby was there for a year before we got married. It's cool, if you're a single soldier. Can you go there? Most assignments there are not accompanied. It's crowded, noisy, dirty and did I say crowded? Do NOT drive while there... it's ugly. The people aren't super keen on soldiers...or they are TOO keen on them. There won't be a lot of support for the kidlets, as it's not generally an accompanied assignment... so schooling may not be very good. Also there's the smell of Kimchee....yucky.

And last and most certainly least...Ft. Hood. Pluses: Largest base stateside, lots of on base support. HUGE commissary and PX (maybe the biggest CONUS)...good hospital and services like that.... Down side...it's FT. HOOD. It's near Kileen, armpit of the universe, black hole of despair. Admittadly I was only 9-12 when we lived there...but...*shudder* I have very few good memories. On 4 seperate occasions while we lived there I had adult men try to pick me up. They'd cruise the neighborhood near the grocery store and try to get me to get in the car and give them directions to somewhere... 3 of the four guys were soldiers from Hood.
The schools sucked. Of course, this WAS a good 25 someodd years ago and it could have changed since then, but from what I've hear...not much.
Copperas Cove is the other choice for off-base living... not so bad but I haven't heard many folks raving about it, either.
Another downside to Hood these days is that most of the soldiers going there end up in Iraq. Well, I guess that's the same for many bases these days.

Anyways, we're looking down the barrel of a PCS, too... so good luck!
