Help us pick our next assignment!

we have been in all of those places except the germany site. we loved the ft meade area and would go there again if chance arose. we are retired military and loved our time in.

Never lived there but I'd say Stuttgart. My grandfather was in the army and my dad was born there. The GP's have lots of fond memories of living there. plus the opportunity to live in Europe would be awesome

Sorry for the delay in responding! It was dance recital weekend for the girls! I am SO HAPPY to have today with nothing planned! It is a pjs day all day at my house!

Thank you all so much! It is great to see that so many people would love to go to Germany as well! It is an overwhelming feeling to think of all the things we will have to do in order to move overseas but DH and I have decided to take the adventure and go to Germany! DD9 is very excited, DD11 wants to go but is very upset about leaving her guinea pig behind for 3 years. (he will go live with her grandparents!)

We promised them a trip to DL Paris once we get settled. They are trying to talk DH into trips to Hong Kong and Tokyo while we are overseas. They say it is only fair compensation for growing up as gypsies!(Army Brats!)

I guess I will have to start to do some research and also look into German lessons for everyone. They offer them here on post for the kids but the times seem to conflict with all their summer plans!

Thank you everyone for all the info and insights! I really appreciate it!

I actually did look at that and as my parents live in FL and we are FL residents that spend almost half the year in FL as well as wherever my DH is stationed Norfolk was high on the list! It was very hard for me to agree to Germany! It is prob the hardest move for us to make logistically! And my parents are not thrilled with us moving overseas for 3 years. But it is a chance that I can't pass up,no matter how much I dread the plane ride over there! We will always have WDW to go to...but how often will we be given the chance to see Europe for 3 years?! I couldn't let this one pass. Plus...we get to go the DL paris while we are there! It is less then 4 hours by train from Stuttgart!

We lived in Newport News (right across the bridge from Norfolk) for three years, and absolutely loved it.

I would go back to Virginia in a heartbeat. My children were not school age at the time, so I cant' tell you about schools, but we loved our neighborhood - about five minutes from Williamsburg) and being able to visit the mountains, beach, or countryside. Every weekend we'd just hop in the car and go somewhere; Georgia, the Carolinas, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland...we had so much fun.

Although we are stationed in Texas at the moment it is thankfully NOT Ft. Hood, but I've visited there, and I don't recommend it. Killeen is basically a stretch of highway between Dallas and Waco with one dirty mall and a couple of dirty shopping centers on either side of it.

Now I will admit I have a particular emotional bias against Ft. Hood because the only times we've been there are to say goodbye to my husband as he heads for Iraq. My kids can't even see a highway sign for I35 without having an anxiety attack!

But even when my husband has to go to Ft. Hood on TDY he doesn't like it.

I would also vote for Germany - just for the experience of living in Europe. Unfortunately, my husband is too far along in his career to get an overseas post.

We are at Fort Hood currently. We live off post in Copperas Cove about 10-15 min away. I hear the schools are great - I don't have any children enrolled in them so I don't know personally. My DH deployed 5 mos after arriving. The job market stinks unless you are a teacher or nurse or military. The upsides: close to Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Cheap taxes - no income tax, inexpensive houses. Killeen has its good parts bad just like everyother place in the US. Just about every store you can think of is within an hour or so. It's all what you can get used to. It is hot though!

We lived in Norfolk Va for two ys and it was the worst two of my life!!! Hated it!!! I guess it all boils down to what you like. There was WAY to many people there for us and the traffic was horrible! Also the crime rate was unbelievable. we lived in a really good neighborhood and it was nothing to hear about multiple rapes and robberies right down the street. The weather we hated!! I cant give it a positive on anything but hey what do I know. also cost of living is unreal.

I definately have to say Germany. I lived about an hour and half north of there and it is just amazing. Its absolutely beautiful, the food is great, the people are great, and the public transportation is super so weekend trips are really easy. As for you daughter returning to the 10th grade, in my experience, students are really interested in hearing about your experiences (well at least in my case) so it may be an opportunity to make friends.

Good Luck!!
