We've been members since 2008 but I have always used my points yearly or borrowed some from the next year so I've never had banked points to use or tried to use my points for a massive vacation. I'm confused when to book our Aulani trip and how to best use my points.

Here is what I have currently have...

December Use Year/ AKV Home Resort
December 2013 - Banked 23 points
December 2014 - 200 points
December 2015 - 200 points
December 2016 - 200 points

We would like to travel to Aulani in 2016 for about 2 weeks. It looks like we'll need around 500 points for a 1 Bedroom at Aulani. Am I right that the 23 banked points might mess us up? I think what I'd ideally want to do is use the 2013 banked points, the 2014 points and borrow the 2015 points but when would I need to travel by as I think I'll lose the 23 banked points shortly? It seems that I need to let go of the 23 banked points and bank the 2014 200 points, use the points from 2015 and borrow from 2016 to make this happen?

Am I making any sense? Anyone have any insight? We had originally thought that we'd like to go in March 2016 but I think it might be a bit too busy at this time of year so we are thinking either Jan/Feb or Sept/ Oct. Any help is appreciated.

You are currently in your Dec 2014 UY.
Those banked 2013 point will expire on Dec 1, 2015 if not used before then.
To go to Aluani in 2016 as long as the trip ends before Nov 30, 2016 you can use:
Banked Dec 2014 UY points into Dec 2015 UY.
Current 2015 UY points.
Borrowed 2016 UY points into Dec 2015 UY.

PP already said it, but you can't get those 23 banked 2013 points into 2016. You can bank your 2014 UY points into 2015 and use them for 2016 travel to Aulani (assuming it is before Decmber 2016.)

While we are on this subject.....are those 23 banked points allowed to be rented out or transferred to another owner?

I would hate to lose 23 points. That happened once, early in our membership. Another time we had some points hanging out there and ended up using them in a nice city hotel.

The OP had my curiosity going, so I pulled out the 2015-2016 catalog version of the DVC points charts (which just came in the mail recently), and noticed the changes they made to Adventure Season at Aulani for 2016...actually all four of the "seasons".

Wanted to let the OP know that both of our trips there were in mid-January. The resort was busy, but not crazy crowded. I thought the weather was perfect....we had one violent thunderstorm one night and even the natives were kind of surprised at just how bad it was. The ocean was kind of rough outside of the resort area. But we also saw whales both trips.

Two weeks sounds awesome. And if you are feeling like you are missing something by getting a standard view or island view instead of Ocean, you really aren't. There are plenty of public spots inside the resort that have great views of the ocean.

Did they always have four view categories? I thought there had only been three...standard, island, ocean...I don't remember poolside view). Although the island view is a bit nicer than standard.

Have fun planning. Seems like you have a good plan in place.
