Postal workers or spiders?

This country has been around now for nearly 228 years and yet I find it hard to believe how insensitive we continue to be. Profiling people based on their race or maritial status is just not right. To try and inflict harm on a black female postal worker who has lost her husband is just wrong. All she is trying to do is bring you your mail and yet you keep trying to kill her. I have heard of people going postal but this seems a little overboard don't you think? Or are you saying this woman is trying to steal your mail and that is why you are trying to kill her? Either way, taking the law into your own hands will only result in anarchy. I think Rodney King said it best when he asked, "Can't we all just get along?"

I am cracking up!!!

OKAAAAAYYYY; NEVER going to Florida again; maybe never going to the States again.
I've even told DH & my kids to cremate me cos I don't want any horrible insects near me.!

OOOOooooooooo Yuck, I feel all horrible now, why did I read this thread?!!!

OK.... ignorant Brit warning.....

I think I know what Black Widows look like, but what about these recluse spiders? What's the chance of meeting one in a rented villa in Kissimmee??

And does anyone know what the weird little thin spiders are? And more to the point are they safe? We had loads in the house and round the pool last October, but I hadn't seen any on previous years. It was very hot weather, and I don't think it was a housekeeping issue as the villa was spotless in all other respects.

I'm not scared of crawly things unless they are going to bite or sting me. So in the UK I'm only bothered by wasps really. (The postal workers don't bite over here unless severely provoked)

Should I be more wary in Florida? (I've already had the fire ants experience :scared1: )

And while I'm hijacking this thread, what about cute little green frogs? We had them in our porch but DH forbade everyone to touch them just in case. :)

You don't generally see Brown Recluse spiders in Florida, but they are quite common in Texas where I am from. They are very bland looking,, deceptively so.

As far as I know, the cute little frogs in Florida are safe. It's the tree frogs that have poison on their skin, none in Florida, as far as I know.

Major 'YIKES' factor of 10 about the black widow spiders! Professional for sure. :earseek:

About scorpians, we spent a holiday in a cabin in the Texas Hill country a few years back, and my youngest DD, (who was about 6 at the time) put on her water shoes that were drying out on the front porch. Seconds later, she was screaming her head off, and upon taking off her watershoes,, a scorpian fell out. Well, I guess we had seen way too many Cowboy movies,, as we panicked big time. We were out about 50 miles from a hospital, so we drove to the owner of the cabin, who calmed our fears, and told us to put wet baking soda on the sting, and have her keep her foot in cold water, at the creek possibly. Sheesh. She always shakes out her watershoes now, and remembers vividly that scorpian. She believes it targeted her because that's her zodiac sign,,lol

No kidding mine too, what day in November?

I can only speak for the South and North- Haven't been West past mississippi BUT NEVER put on cloths or shoes here in the south ( read that as FLORIDA :sunny: )without shaking them out first. We also have to contend with house centipeds- they can sting and are around 2 inches long if allowed to live long enough. They LOVE to get in the bed sheets- don't freak about Florida- no matter where you live there are creepy-crawlies all around you!

Just remember to be bug smart and be careful- another thing that we do is always close and snap or zip shut our suitcases when traveling because when the maids come in to clean your room they often prop the door open- if it's an outside access room the bugs can get in! :earseek:

I had a real surprise one night at the All stars Movies hotel- I had tummy trouble, had just gotten out of the shower ( see- NAKED WOMEN) and was looking through my suitcase for pepto to settle the problem and a big old ( I call them roaches ) but the locals call them some other name - I think palmeto bug- crawled out and raced accross my hand-

gosh my tummy troubles weren't so bad as screaming at the top of my lungs- running around the room flipping on all the lights, hunting the bug, waking my kids in the process and realising that my Parents-in-law were running through the connecting doorway and came in to see all of me- I mean all 230 lbs of me- head to toes!

The neighbor heard me and called the front desk and there were hotel people and security at the door at 3 AM to see if I was being attacked- it's funny now- while my husband was laughing his bottom off I had to explain my problem to security and apoligise to our neighbors and avoid my laughing parent-in-laws, all while trying to maintain some modesty wrapped in a blanket- it was the closest thing to grab and cover with!! :teeth:

Bugs - hate them- and they and I just don't get along! princess:

Not knowing your dating habits or what kind of pick-up line you might be using, it is hard to tell whether you would be able to meet a recluse spider at a hotel in Florida. (I am assuming here that "spider" is some kind of British slang for rich American dude right?) You might want to rethink your whole find a guy theory though and go for a more mainstream dude. Trying to date a recluse just seems like you are adding a level of complexity that you don't need to. Personally I would suggest that you find someone with a few more social graces that doesn't mind being seen in public. But then what do I know, I have never tried to pick up a guy in my life. I don't even offer to give them a ride home from school.
