Hi all,

TV packed in the other day and it can't be repaired due to a part being deleted. Luckily it's still under 1yr guarantee so we just need to exchange it.

I've been to Curry's and seen a few tv's and wondered if you had any opinions or recommendations.

Sony KD32DX40 32" Virtual Dolby, WEGA, flatscreen
Sony KV32FQ75 32" 100hts Nicam

Toshiba 32ZD26P 100htz Nicam
Toshiba 32ZP18Q 100htz Dolby Digital

Toshiba 40PW13B 40" rear projection TV (know nothing about these, are they any good???)

Many thanks

Lisa

My brother has a 40" rear projection tv. They're slim because they don't have the tube, and it is very nice. My only negative observation is that you need to be sitting fairly squarely in front of it to get a good picture. It's OK for them, as they have it set up in a 'home cinema' room in the middle of one wall and there are only two of them. I don't think it would be so good for a family in the traditional 'corner of the lounge' position.

Hi Deb,

Thanks for the reply! That rules us out then!! Our TV is in the corner of the lounge ;)

Thanks Tim & NeilyBealy!

I have posted my Q and I've done a search, something I should've done before I posted really as I would've found my answer a lot quicker!!

It looks like the Sony is out as most people have had problems with it and Sony doesn't seem to be doing much about it. The Toshiba looks pretty favourable at the moment. The only small drawback is that Curry's is selling it at £1424 and I can get it from Robertsons Online for £1110 which is a bit of a difference.

As Curry's cannot fix the TV can we legally demand our money back (unless Curry's price match)??? We bought the TV at the end of last December so it's still under the 12months guarantee. The only other thing is that we bought it with a free DVD player so I take it we would just hand over the whole package and ask for our money back??

Many thanks

Lisa

i wouldn't worry about the dvd player

i've just bought my bro a slimline pioneer multi region (model dv350) dvd player for £139.99 delivered

they might not even think to ask for the dvd player back

print the page from robertsons, show them at currys and tell them that unless they can match their price you'll be asking for a refund !

Don't quote me, but my understanding is that under the Sale of Goods Act, the vendor (not the manufacturer) is obliged to repair or replace any faulty goods. If they're unable to repair or replace with an identical item, I would say you're entitled to a refund. I'm not sure about the timescale, though. I think the guarantee stands alone (i.e. it is an extra and 'does not affect your statutory rights'), but I would still check to see what it says.

Funny you should say that about Sony. I really like Sony and we have a Sony video and Sony digital camera. Our Sony TV is on the blink, it was supposed to have been fixed and we parted with £80 and the problem is still there (colour changes around the bottom of the screen) but the repairers say they had it on soak test for 4 days and it doesn't do it. They reckon it is a magnetism problem, but we have removed all our surround sound speakers and it is still there!!

We have just bought the Panaonic Recorable DVD but we may be in the market for a new TV as well!!

I don't think Curry's have a leg to stand on at the moment, they can either price match or we can legally ask for our money back and shop elsewhere. Unfortunately I think they will notice the DVD as it is shown clearly on the receipt....

Lisa:(

Hi Lisa,

I don't think they can ask for the DVD back. Surely it was a condition that if you bought that TV you got the DVD. You fulfilled that condition and got the DVD. It is through no fault of your own that the TV has stopped working or that they cannot fix it, therefore they have no right to ask for it back. Now if you were changing your mind about the TV then yes they could ask for it back.

Also, what would they do with it? They can't sell it on as it is second-hand and I think they would get naff all for it if they did sell it this way.

If I were you I would quickly mark it with one of those security pens with your postcode, don't take the DVD with you or mention it unless they do. If they have the cheek to ask for it back, speak to the manager and explain the above and also point out that it has your address all over it, as a security measure. :D

We have a 32 inch Sony Trinitron with PIP, which we really like. The only drawbacks are that it's absolutely huge and weighs a ton. The picture in picture (PIP) cost $100 more, and to be honest was a bit of a waste as we hardly use it. Over here, Sony has a really good reputation.

We saw some of those really cool HDTV's this summer in Tampa. The one I liked was a flat screen, Sony, and only cost $12,000. :earseek:

There's more to this story now :(

Mastercare have just rung me up to say they'll drop off our old TV next Tuesday. I rang them up a couple of days ago and was told that it couldn't be repaired as the part was obsolete and to go back to Curry's and exchange it. I then rang back up querying the return of the TV and was told that the part they needed was obsolete but they had put in another part and it SEEMED to be working ok. I then asked what the guarantee on the repair would be and was told that it was only till the end of the year.....

My dilemma is that hardly any large electrical retailer seems to stock Hitachi TV's, the part is still obsolete and what would happen if it packs in just after the guarantee period, which would be just my luck  To be honest, I wish I hadn't agreed to have it repaired as I could've asked for a full refund under the sale of goods act. They have said it can be returned next Tuesday but I don't want it back..... I wonder if there is any way I can reject the goods.....

I'm off to phone Which? legal services and I'll let you know how I get on.

Lisa

OMG Lisa.

I wouldn't accept that, you want a years guarnatee on that repair (that is what we got with a Sony approved repairer, and our TV is 6 years old, even though our fault is still there!). Why should you accept it SEEMS to be working. Get something in writing from them saying that it is definiitely fixed and a 1 years guarantee on the repair, otherwise you will not accept it. 4 months guarantee on a 'seems' is not good enough. You would probably be best not accepting the return of it.

This TV repair lark is a nightmare, ours has been in twice and all we had was a portable!

BTW. I thought you had to give them the option to repair after so long?

Good luck.

Theresa

There doesn't seem much I can do, I only wish I'd got into Curry's on the day they told me it was irrepairable and picked up a TV from stock..... :( And then if they discovered it was repairable well, that would've been their fault. Unless, of course, they could've taken the exchange one back.

Never mind, I wonder if I can will it to break down within the next 4 months? ;)
