I'm looking into DVC hopefully in the next two years. My head is spinning even though I feel like I've done a lot of research.:confused3

If I buy 160 points at one resort, Does that mean that if I don't use them one year and borrow from the next year I would have 480 points available for a monster vacation?

Is that the most I would ever have available at one time (unless I add on of course.)?

Also, use year confuses me. I'm a teacher. Most likely vacations would be in April or August...what use year do you pick?

Also, (sorry I know it's a lot) with the new restrictions in March, am I understanding right, that if you buy resale, you may only use your points for the Disney resorts...no cruises?

One more, if you want through RCI or Intervale for say 1 week in Aruba, how many points does that use???? Do the March restrictions affect this too?

I know this is a lot, but I keep reading and reading and I just feel like I want simple answers. I think DVC would be a good fit, because I want to go every or every other year and I like to stay deluxe I just don't want to make a big mistake.

Yes (but do be aware that DVC reserves the right to limit banking and borrowing if that becomes necessary due to some kind of imbalance that develops - but also know that that's never happened and I don't expect it ever will).

Yes.

April.

Right now, RCI is the company DVC trades with. It was II before that and RCI before II (back in 1997 when we bought). Your documents only guarantee that you will be able to book your home resort up to 1 month out. Nothing more than that. So don't buy with the plan to vacation in Aruba (that also depends on it being available through RCI at this time - it might not be available when you want to go). Make a DVC purchase with the plan to use your points at your home resort and possibly the other DVC resorts.

You want to get a UY that will allow you to reschedule or bank your points if you have to cancel. So if you mainly go in April or Aug, you'll want a UY before April and not shortly after August (like Sept).

The changes coming up in March means that if you purchase a resale after March 20 (or from March 20, not sure which) you may not use your points for any Disney exchange, such as the Disney Cruise Line, any of the WDW hotels that are not DVC resorts, any of the DL resorts that are not DVC resorts, etc.

There are lots of questions. Might be hard to find all of them out through the boards. Call DVC and ask to speak to a cast member. They'll be in the best position to give you those details. If you question what the CM is telling you then you should throw it past the boards and the boards will tell you things the CM won't.

And just because you speak to a cast member doesn't mean you can't buy resale, just not through him. Don't feel guilty, they've been using us for years.

First... thank you for being a teacher! It's one of the very most important jobs out there!

I agree with the poster who suggested the April use year. Basically this means that your points become available to you on the first day of the month of your use year. So in choosing April, every April 1st you would get your 160 point alotment. Also on April 1st, you would then be able to borrow one year forward :) We had a lot of questions too at first but are so very happy that we bought. I would give DVC a call and speak to a "guide" as they are called. We have never experienced high pressure sales and have always felt comfortable calling up to ask questions. There are also some really good incentives going on that they can tell you about :) Good luck! And please let us know if you have more questions!

Keep in mind that you are seeking to buy in about two years. DVC will most likely have some more changes in the rules and system before you make your purchase. So be sure to stay on top of these boards, and keep informed as something you may find out now could very well change dramatically by the time you purchase.

Best wishes to you.. :)

i disagree with the poster that suggested asking guides for information - they are salespeople. disney's salespeople will be more honest than some timeshare's sales staff but if you do your research on the DIS, read through a bunch of threads and learn to use the search function...you will be a much more informed consumer.

not exactly accurate.

my points for my oct 2012 UY are already in my account. since you are a member, look online to verify that.

i don't have to wait till oct 1 to borrow the next year's points. UY has nothing to do with calling to book or anything like that. UY month tells you when your pts are valid and when your banking window closes. that is all.

so if i wanted to book a stay for oct 10, 2012 for 5 nights, i know that those dates will be in my 2012 UY...that tells be i can use banked 2011 pts (if i have any), current 2012 pts and borrowed 2013 pts if needed.

i can call 11 months ahead to book my home resort - UY is a nonissue - so i could call as early as nov 10, 2011 to book that stay starting oct 10, 2012. when i call on nov 10, 2011, i can ask to borrow pts from 2013 at that time.

here is an important thread for understanding UY:

True. But you'd better be willing to take the time and do the work, or you're going to buy an expensive luxury item without really knowing what you are buying.

Disagree. Many guides are excellent; others have no clue. Some are honest; others are not.

The one thing you can count on from a DVC timeshare salesman is that they will present their product in the best possible light. They certainly will not tell you any downsides of DVC ownership, nor will they offer other options.

At best, you'll be getting a very one-sided explanation of DVC.
