Help settle a debate (driving related)

I am curious--where does your DH figure those sensors think the cars are going when he goes back and forth over them? How would all of those cars be fitting in that small amount of space? pixiedust:

I think he is just doing this to get your goat! :rotfl:

So then this brings another question up for me, I sometimes see people who flash their brights on and off to change the light. I doubt it does anything but my friend believes is helps....could this be true at all?

I've never heard of this, but no, it wouldn't help at all!

My guess is they could be trying to activate emergency pre-emption, but it's not "light" related.

There is the sensor that going over ONE TIME will activate but they are still timed as to how long after someone trips the sensor the light will change. I know one light be a school near us is timed to change as soon as the sensor is tripped during the school day to accommodate the buses but after 3:30, it will take 30 seconds to 1 minute for the light to cycle.

I have never heard of it before and then when I saw it a few times and then my friend did it. I was like what the heck are you doing that for and she replied that it will change the light and it actually did, but I assumed it was just a coincidence and I thought she was just messing with me. I see more and more people do it in the morning when I am headed out to work.

If a light signal has the light sensor at the top to change for emergency vehicles SOMETIMES if you can aim your brights just right you can trip the activator thingy. If the signal doesn't have one of these you just look like an idiot :rotfl2: .

This is an urban legend. Flashing your lights at a traffic signal doesn't make it change any faster.

Here's a link for a lengthy discussion on this:

Very likely. He enjoys that. At first it was just one of those dumb things he does, now it's just plain irritating. I showed him this thread last night and while not admitting he was wrong (him? never!) he just might knock it off. We'll see next time we go somewhere.

i think the 'sensor' thing is a big fat myth...i think all lights are on timed cycles...regardless of traffic patterns.

Disagree with OP's husband, but I also disagree with this.

Lights can be set to sensors. Se have several in our town--due to configuration--that once you pull up, the light pretty much immediately changes. Otherwise--it just stays red. Works well for an area where it is safer to have the light--but isn't busy enough to warrant cycling.

This is sort of like pushing the elevator button 20 times to get the elevator to come faster. :teeth:
