It sounds to me like neither one is your dream job, or is going to put you on a track to your dream job, beyond some networking opportunities that won't change since you'll still be in the university.

I think if you can work with MIL in a professional setting and the job seems like its a stable one that isn't going to be cut from the university budget, you should change. 10K more a year is always a good plus, and since it seems like both are equally OK for you, why not make some more $$$ and get a change in scenery while you look for options elsewhere in your field?

I would sit down with MIL and say "I can only take this job if you and I can agree to make sure no one ever has a cause to accuse either of us of favoritism. That means I can't spend extra time with you and you can't spend extra time with me. No going to lunch on a daily basis. No hanging out in each other's offices and chatting. No help from you." Insert whatever you're concerned she might do.

This is what my MIL just emailed to me:

"And selfishly, I would certainly enjoy working with you! We would do some things together when I have Academic Affairs!"


....ok just as long as she doesn't like... want to go to lunch every day or something.

It could be good for your relationship. (let's hope!) You and your MIL will have something in common that doesn't involve your DH.

Oh and the lunch every day thing? Only if she's buying!

I'm taking your advice, guys!! I have sent over my resume and let them know that I'm interested in applying. They seem very excited

I'M SOOOO NERVOUS. I don't do 'change' very well.... it gives me anxiety. But, it'll be a good change with a good training period.
