I just bought two lots of cast lanyard trading pins on E-bay one lot of 50 and another of 60. Well I got one of the lots today and I think some of the pins may be scrappers either that or disney has gotten really cheap on making the pins (which, I doubt). Are there any certain things I should look at to determine if they are scrappers?

The biggest thing that has jumped out to me is that all of the pins are really thin. One of the pins I actually already own and my pin is much thicker and the backs are a little different (one is c 2005 other is c 2006).

I will try and post a picture in a little bit.

Thanks

Please do. One of the main things to look at is the surface of the front of the pin- are they rough or smooth? Many scrappers are very rough and the colors are separated. Post a pic when you can!

:goodvibes

I am so sorry! I am dealing with the same thing with a lot of 40!

Have you looked on PinPics to see what the copyright and back stamp should say? My scrappers have wrong back stamps, came with metal backs, in plastic bags sealed with one staple, and if you run your finger over the front it feels rough. Also the features on the characters faces are blurred. The silver outline looks too thick and shiny, distorting the clarity of the image. We also figured out some of ours were "fakes" by having duplicates that are real. Side by side the differences are painfully obvious.:sad2:

Did the sellers say "no scrappers"? Maybe if you contact them you can return the pins.

Here are a few pics of the pins:

The one I have that really made me notice was from the CM Lanyard Transportation Series and is the Goofy on Horse Drawn Trolley. Mine is from 2005 and it states Cast Lanyard Series on the back along with the official pin trading and C Disney made in China. The one I got has the Hidden Mickey Pin 3 of 6 and is from 2006 and has the C Disney made in China. Also upon further inspection the color seems off in the background and Goofy's mouth has a black tongue instead of a red one. Also the pins smell a little bit I'm not sure of what, but almost like oil or something.

The back stamp looks right, but the black tongue makes me wonder. One of the "hallmarks" of a scrapper is incorrect coloring. Your back stamp could be right, but what makes it a scrapper is the coloring.

Funny you should say that about the smell, because DH and I both noticed that about the ones we think are scrappers. If the seller has a return policy posted I would probably return them.

One of the WORST things corporate EVER did to pin collectors is change the backstamp on the CAST LANYARD or HIDDEN MICKEY or LANYARD Series pins. Ugh, I get confused and i've been trading and collecting since 1999!

Disney destroyed their "Beanie Babies" market and they seem to be in the process of destroying their pins as well.

I actually think your pin in the pic is authentic. The quality of some pins Disney put out is not always the best, I've noticed a difference from year to year in pins I *know* are authentic. The thickness being different & the color being different don't really bother me.

Even so, if you think that these pins are scrappers, then contact the seller & see if they'll refund your money. (I'd also take some of these pins & see what Scoop Sanderson, Main Street Pin Trader, has to say.)

agnes!

My 2 cents from a distance-

Both of the backstamps are correct as that pin has been re-released as a CLS and a HM..

However I don't have either to tell what the correct coloring is (though I know we have some at work and I'll check then)

I do have this pin on my scrapper board (Yes I have a board of all the scrappers Ive found..) but the difference was it had a very high gloss (almost a propin gloss) on top and was thinner like a propin.

So Im reluctant to call this pin as those charastics arnt mentioned until I get to work and check how the "official" HM goofy looks color wise-

HOWEVER- That Minnie pin has obvious paint issues (unless Minnie shaved her head), the tink looks like it may but it may be the angle so my gut is that they are a bad batch :(

Agnes! - I agree with you 110% about the back stamps!!! DH and I are now in a heated debate about what to do with the pins we can tell for sure are scrappers. Like the vast majority of that entire 40 pin lot. And another 20 pin lot that we scrutinized this afternoon.

When I first started buying lots on eBay I wrote down the seller's name and what pins we bought from each of them. If the pins aren't duplicates then we know 100% where the pin came from. Out of those 60 almost ALL of them look funny or have the wrong back stamp. Or if the wording on the back stamp is right it is different font than the pins we know are authentic. Once again, unless you have them side by side you would never know.

I say we bring them to MK and ask them what we OUGHT to do with them. Obviously this is in no way their fault - I bought the pins from eBay without doing enough research on the sellers. Sucker born every minute and all that sort of thing. I will print out my eBay receipts and bring those along, too, just to back up my story. We've never met Scoop, but if we happen to run across him I would love his input. DH says we should just trade them unless they look really bad.:sad2: I have ethical issues with trading off pins we know are fakes.

I looked at our HM pins at work and I concur its a scrapper. The new version of that pin looks identical to the old one and so the coloring is off on the scrapper. Goofy's mouth still has red inside and not black :(

Oh my! Yes, I would rather be safe than sorry- does your seller offer money back or something? If they are scrappers, and I would lean towards the possibility that they are based on my own experience and everything everyone has said here, I wonder if the seller knows? Have you contacted him/her yet?

Yes, I agree, theres nothing worse than dealing with a crooked ebay seller or pin trader.

I know just what you mean asianway. Not too long ago I had a rotten experence with someone on ebay who didn't deliver the pins they sold. All the headaches can be very stressful. As for scrappers half the time I can't tell the difference, many headaches there too...

This is the great thing about the pin community, we all stand together to police ourselves and help the new traders out.

I by pins for my boys on Ebay, is it all right to list the seller you purchased these pins from on the dis? I want to be sure and stay away:confused3

Thanks

Well, I have looked all over and I happened to find a few different sellers that match your description (as far as what is for sale). It is odd that there are so many lots for sale of the exact same pins. I can't tell from the pics they furnish if they are selling scrappers or not, but I don't think I will buy from any of them because it is just odd how many lots they are offering.

That is one reason I am not posting the names of the sellers my fakes are from. I think it is very safe to assume that ALL of the sellers with HUGE quantities of Cast Lanyard and/or Hidden Mickey pins are selling fakes. If I tell you who I bought my fakes from you will avoid her, but there are dozens more exactly like her on eBay!:headache: The pics of the pins I bought in those 2 lots don't look like scrappers - it is the back stamps that seal it. And we have been using a magnifying glass to read the back stamps because the years are hard to read.

What makes me REALLY sad is that a guy I just bought 12 authentic pins from had the high bid earlier today on a lot from the girl who sold me the lot of 40 fakes. I don't want to get sucked into a bunch of eBay politics, but I really thought about sending him an e-mail to tell him to be VERY careful about the lots he bids on.:sad2:

Yes, Elizabeth, that is what I thought when I saw all the ones on there today selling literally hundreds of the same pin sets. Now, honestly I am not sure how many cast lanyard pins are made, but I am pretty sure they are not all sold or traded in the hundreds to the same people. Know what I mean?

I feel badly for you and for the seller that bid today. It really devalues our pins when someone does that. I hope the seller wasn't buying that lot to re-sell them! Now that is a mess.

Unfortunately, I think that was precisely why he was bidding on them.:guilty:

I am trying to have a sense of humor about it, even though it isn't very funny. We buy these trader pins from eBay so we don't have to pay $7 per pin at the parks, then I end up with 60 fakes. At a cost of about $2.60 per pin. I could have had 22 rack pins for the same amount of money. Ironic, yes. Funny, not so much.

No- it is definitely not funny. Can you get your money back through PayPal or anything?

I haven't even tried. At this point I think they would tell me "too bad" because so much time has passed. And I left positive feedback. So I think we will just call it a lesson learned and go from here.
