Hello Dis'ers!
Does anyone have any hints on how to save money on a one way car rental? I need to rent a minivan from June 10th to June 24th and I will be picking it up at the airport in Birmingham Alabama and dropping it off at the airport in Nashville TN. Not a great way to have to go , but there is no getting around those dates and locations.
So, now I need to find the best rate possible. So far, the best I can do including taxes, is $915 using the Costco code at Alamo.
Any ideas?? It seems SO much in comparison to other rentals I've done.
Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks so much!

Unfortunately, one way rentals are just really expensive and there's not much that can be done to get around it. Every once in a while you can find a good deal from a company that wants to move their fleet around a bit (for example, it's usually pretty cheap to rent cars going in to florida in the fall and out of florida in the spring), but unless you happen to catch a deal like that you're likely to run into a large surcharge. Definitely keep trying your dates and try as many rental car companies as you can... rates can vary widely... espeically for one ways.

The only other thing you might want to try is to do it as two reservations. One for the few days that you'll actually be traveling and the other as regular rental during the rest of the time. That way you won't get hit with the one way surcharge on all of your days.

To be perfectly honest, though... $914 for a one way minivan rental for two weeks is really a pretty good price.

Ugh, well.... I guess I can still hope for better codes. Thanks for your thoughts.
Any one have any other helpful hints or good codes?
Thanks so much!

Have you checked for codes on the internet. I have found that some don't charge more to do a drop off elsewhere but don't remember which company.

The only I've gotten around this is to rent a car and drive to the destination - looks like its only 3-4 hours away and turn the car in the same day. Then rent a van from the destination airport. Or have one person return the van to the arrival airport and rent another car or find another way to get to the departure airport.

Outside of certain closely-located resort regions (such as central Florida), you just won't be able to avoid that monster drop-off surcharge.

What I have done in similar situations if I need the car to transport someone or something, is to make it a r/t rental plus a o/w plane ticket. I drive the car back to the airport of origin, then immediately get on a plane to go right back where I came from. It's always several hundred dollars cheaper, though it does cost a lot in time (though in your case it really wouldn't be bad, because BHM and BNA are only 3 hours apart.) Southwest often runs really cheap flights between the two cities.

I looked for codes last week for my sister for the same situation and couldn't find a thing. If any way possible to fly....Bham to Nashville is usually $49 for 1-way....Good luck!!!
