Help...planning camping trip from DFW to NYC

Hope this is alright to post here. We are fairly new to travel trailer camping. We were very fortunate to go to Fort Wilderness this year. (Had a great time!) However, my DH wants to do something different like possibly go up North next summer. He is particularly interested in sightseeing in NYC but also would like to visit Niagra Falls.

Since I am the planner, I am very interested in any advice/tips from my fellow DISers. (i.e. best routes, best RV parks, and any touristy stops we should make along the way.) If there is a route or campground you think we should avoid, please let me know that as well.

It will be myself, DH, DS 14, and DS10. We will be pulling a 26ft travel trailer from the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX area.

If you take the I-40 route and stop in Tn. SKIP Timberline campground in Lebanon Tn. Go a little further down Hwy 231 and stay at Cedars of Lebanon State Park.
