So next March my SIL and her cousins are thinking of doing a Disney trip. Since I love Disney so much I was invitied. Only problem in a timeshare there would be me, my bros fam (4) is wife cousins fam (4) and other cousin family (3 or 4). I don't know the other families as well as do my own and do really feel comfortable. I much rather stay on property than have to help with the cost of renting a van and such. I'm also thinking by the end of the day I think I maybe tired of being with them soo much lol. IDK its kinda of a sticky situation. What would you all do?:confused3

You couldn't pay me enough to stay in a room with that many people. I don't care how big it is.

Get your own room on property and join them at the parks during the day. Keep your sanity!

That looks like 12 people minimum in one condo?????? IMO that's a recipe for disaster. Plus if it's that many people they'd probably need 2 vans. I agree with the PP. Stay elsewhere and join them in the parks.

Never stayed with anywhere near that many people -- even on a trip where we stayed in a townhouse that had 3 bedrooms!!!
Sounds like an opportunity for hurt feelings, disagreements, and too much togetherness.
However, I have a dear friend who treats her family (all that will go) to an oceanfront vacation in MD every year. That, however, is a HOUSE. She says they really have fun, but I've heard some comments that didn't sound like fun to me!

Got to go with aaarcher86, give me my space and privacy .... I'll never stay off property, even for free.... I'll be on property, call me!

I agree with u all! I think I'm gonna stay on property and meet them everyday! plus this way I can enjoy the disney food while they have to pay oop lol

Are you making an assumption that you are getting free dining just because you are staying onsite, or just planning on paying $$$ for the dining plan?

possibly just get separate rooms at same resort - stay close but not togther

You could also suggest that everyone rent their own, smaller unit in the same complex. That way everyone is near each other, but each family has their own retreat at the end of the day. I couldn't imagine the morning battle for bathroom time with that many people!:scared1:

I meant "but" sorry for the misspelling.

OK, that makes more sense! Thanks!

We've found that it costs less to pay OOP, as we can't eat all that food on the TS dining plan. The QS plan is a bit more to our liking, but we've ended up with credits left on that too.

When my daughters went to WDW without me, I made sure they had the QS dining plan, so I wouldn't have to worry about them running out of money and not eating.

Agree -- and in a later post aaaarcher86 brought up an even more important point. It's not just the number of people per UNIT, it's also the number of people per bathroom!

With a group trip, a bed count is not nearly enough!

We did a week-long trip last summer with 3 families, 11 total people -- BUT...we were in THREE 2 BR/2 Bath units. We were next door to each other, so it was very convenient, but everyone had their space.

The other thing I would mention based on our own experience is that group trips are not really ONE vacation.

In our case, we had THREE vacations. It was not a Disney trip, it was to the Great Smokys/Gatlingburg area of Tennessee. In OP's case, there are FOUR vacations happening in the same time frame.

In that environment, you have to realize certain basic truths:
  • You can't plan everything together. It's just not possible, and even if you got agreement on a plan it would be harder than herding cockroaches. Impossible.

Be a planning minimalist for group trips. Let people do their own thing. They will anyway.

  • Not everyone will want (or be able to afford) everything most of the group are doing. Let it go. Let them have their own vacation.

For example, on our trip, 1/3 of the group took a completely nonsensical 6 hour drive to spend 2 hours in an obvious tourist trap. They had a ball, it was a special unique family moment for them, and it was probably one of the most important highlights of their vacation. And all the rest of us were envious of their pictures!

  • The fact that you have multiple plans going on at the same time can pay unexpected dividends. Diverse groups will come up with diverse ideas on how to have fun that nobody else thought of.

Our group was my family (DW, DD10, and me), and two adult daughters, each with husbands and two kids each, ranging from 10-16.

My adult daughters are mature, sensible, professional adults. So of course, one of them (the IT director) wanted to go zip-liining. Not just any zip-lining, of course -- the biggest zip-lining setup in the U.S. The other sensible daughter (the schoolteacher) wanted to take us all to a bean factory. (Yep, BEAN factory -- that was not a typo!)

Both of them obviously lost their minds somewhere between Miami and Sevierville, TN.

But I have to tell you that the zip-lining at Wahoo! and the breakfast/tour at Bush's Beans were two of the best highlights of MY vacation!

There are a few 3 bedroom timeshares out there including Marriott Imperial palms but even they may not provide enough room for 12. I think the resort company would also have a problem with that many people staying in a room (fire code). (I checked the site, up to 10 guests in the Imperial Palms 3 bedroom)

Unless this a 4BR Presidential at Bonnet Creek, you absolutely positively need two units.

hahaha that's funny cause that's exactly why I stay offsite...space and privacy! From my kids!! lol

But yes, for the poster I would choose my own place, whether it's offsite or on. And timeshares are sticklers about the amount of people. 2 bedroom condos sleep 6-8. You would need at least a 3 but more likely 4 bedroom for 12 people.

Totally agree. Bathrooms are as important as bedrooms! I just can't share a bathroom anymore. lol I'm too old, too spoiled, too something. ;)
