Help! New kindles??

more confusion..for me anyway...I was thinking of getting one for my Mom..she is totally computer illiterate, and has no wifi close by as far as I know. I expressed all this to my friend who has a Kindle and she has a connection all the time and as far as I can see on her Kindle it is just wi-fi..I couldn't find where you look to see what version the thing is, but I did look at the Kindle store and was connected while driving all over town. She also insists her Kindle has to be a cheap version, since she got it for free from a drug company (they own a vet business). It is not a touch and has no keyboard, just little buttons on the bottom..I'm really confused..enough so that I will probably just not get one for my Mom..plus I think she'd balk at having an Amazon account with her CC and then I can see the issues of her not knowing what she wanted to get and then thinking the books were too expensive..so never mind on that..but I think I'll still get my daughter one for Christmas.
I just can't figure out what version my friend has that provides connection everywhere at any time but is clearly a lower end model or one that was issued before the Touch.

The Touch is not out yet so any versions that someone owns would be prior to the Touch.

If you were able to be "online" all over town, my guess is she must own a 3G version (unless your town has some kind fo all over wifi). There would be no other way to be connected. My 3G Keyboard does not say 3G ANYWHERE on it so I'm guessing it looks just like a wifi version (not sure since all 3 of us in my house have the 3G version). When I turn on 3G service (I keep it turned off most of the time to save the battery life), it says "Turn on Wireless" as my option.

I'm not sure which version she has. I didn't pay them much attention until the last year or so, but I couldn't find one that looks like you describe by googling so not help there. Sorry.

For what it's worth, I love my Kindle. My dad has one, I have one, my sister and brother each have one, and my oldeset daughter has one. I've preordered the Touch 3G for my youngest daugther as a Christmas present. I've thought of buying one for my grandmother but leaving it on my account as far as CC info goes. I haven't had much time to see if the genres she reads have many books yet.

AFAIK, Kindles have always had a keyboard until the most recent version. We did just get a new one - no keyboard - in the last week, so they are out (but as said above, the Touch versions are not). So if your friend just got it, she would have the new Kindle. If she has had it a while, I would say - are you/she sure it is a Kindle? Because unless it was a very old one, I didn't think any had no keyboard in the past.

PS -here's a Wiki article showing photos of the Kindles and a recap of all the versions that have existed.

I am an Amazon fan! That's the main reason for the Kindle. Also, when I bought my 3g Kindle it wasn't available on the Nook.

Probably because the OP wants internet access for checking e-mail, weather reports, etc when traveling.

3G connectivity on the Nook is limited to B&N’s online ebook store, so it's not what she's looking for.

I know someone who has had a 3G kindle for over a year now and has yet to download a single book. He bought it specifically for international 3G web browsing.

Besides, Kindle vs Nook discussions tend to get a bit testy, and I'm sure a quick search will net plenty of threads where that debate has already taken place. ;)

She has to have the 3G one im thinking. you have to set up the wifi so im pretty sure she remember doing that.

OK..I am SUCH an idiot..yes, friend's Kindle does have keyboard, which I didn't notice because I was paying so much attention to the drug compnay logo slapped on the thing. After looking again, I think maybe it's a Kindle 3..think I'll get my daughter the Touch 3 G...

That's what I ordered my daughter. I bet she'll love it.

My daughter has already made her Christmas list, and it's LONG, but I asked her if she could only have one item on the list, what would it be? I do this every year, and she said the Kindle Touch. :lovestruc
