I am in the market for a new vacuum cleaner. I mainly have hardwood floors with some area rugs, I do have two rooms that are carpet. I remember a few months ago there was a discussion about the Dyson vacuums, do you still recommend them? I have LOTS of steps and the vacuum I have now is very heavy to carry up and down the steps. Any suggestions?

I just bought a vacuum that I really like! I've only had it less than a week, but it works great and it was $120....far less than a Dyson. I am very happy with it so far!

I have the Eureka as1000a. I got it at Walmart.

I have an irobot roomba it is the best thing ever! Just turn it on and it does the job for you and it can get under beds and furniture. I love mine I will never buy any other vacuum.

Wish I could remember where I read the review but one of the Eureka vacuums beat the Dyson Animal hands down. Not even close.

I have a Kenmore Progressive canister. I love it. I have had it for more than 8 years. I have 3 cats and it does a great job on sucking up fur off of the floor and furniture. Comes with a furniture attachement that has a small beater bar. The attachment is great for stairs too. It has all the attachments on board so the are very handy when I need them. about 6 months ago I ordered a replacment beater bar from Sears and that is all I have had to replace other than bags and hepa filter.

OBW me and DH are allergic to cats but this vacuum is so good we hardly have any allergy issues.

I am happy with my second Hoover in 30 plus years. My daughter has a Dyson and she was just over to borrow my Hoover. First Hoover was about $99; present one $199. The first one still worked and Goodwill took it - it just looked kind of beat up.

I just got a Shark Navigator - has TONS of great reviews on Amazon, and I personally love it:) $179 at Bed Bath & Beyond, minus the 20% coupon...

we have an oreck and love it. if you have allergies or asthma - its actually better to use a bag system.

For hard flooring, I find canister vacuums MUCH more convenient. They can maneuver and get in to areas an upright just won't fit - which are the places dust, dirt, and pet hair gather with hard flooring.

I have a Eureka canister vacuum my mother gave me. Works great on my tile and it's got to be at least 10 years old.

My mother's house has hardwood floors and she has a Miele. It seems to be more powerful than my Eureka, but it's a lot heavier.

I was a live-in nanny for people who had a Dyson canister vacuum and it SUCKED! And not in the way you want a vacuum to suck! :rotfl:

We bought a dyson 4 years ago after reading tons of reviews especially after the dog hair. It has never lived up to its hyped and I will never spend more than $200 on a vacuum cleaner. We just had a replace the dyson and I bought a Hoover powerforce a few weeks back and it is doing a better job than the Dyson.

My sweeper died a few months ago, and I too did not want to spend the money on a Dyson. So I looked at Consumer Reports and saw a highly rated Hoover. I bought it and a Dyson. I ran the Hoover in the living room. Then I ran the Dyson. Because the Dyson is bagless, I could see what the Hoover missed. Yowzda! I couldn't believe how much the Dyson picked up after the Hoover was just run. So I tried the hallway & bedrooms. Same thing. I suggest you try doing the same test.

I bought both vac's at Kohls with my 30% coupon and during when they were running the Kolhs cash promo. I checked to see the return policy before I used the vac's. I ended up paying $209 for the Dyson but then I got $40 in Kohls cash.

I have a Meile - which isn't a cheap vaccuum. But which I love. I've had two Dysons - two because the first one was a lemon and the second one no better. I have a fifteen year old Oreck that I like a lot.

Dysons are horrible for stairs - the are very heavy and the hose system is cumbersome. I have an upstairs vac (the Oreck) and a downstairs vac (the Meile) and do the stairs with the very light Oreck.

I have 3 staircases to clean and almost all wood floors in my house. I have a Rainbow. It isn't the easiest on stairs, but not as bad as a normal canister which I used to have. It cleans the floors great.

I have a Dyson animal (the purple one for pet hair) I got it for $225 it was a display model at Target, it has great suction and easy to empty........but it is rather heavy to lug up and down stairs so I still keep my old Panasonic the U-bags are getting harder to find..........so I may have to try something else.
My DD just got a roomba she loves it! :thumbsup2 she borrowed a friends before she bought one if that's an option.

Well, just because they WILL take it back does not mean you should do things like this! Kohl's cannot sell that Hoover vac now, so you cost the store money, and, in the end, customers money, so you could do a test.

I have a yellow Dyson that I bought from Kohls and I hate it! I'm hoping to buy a new vacuum soon, but it's a difficult purchase to swallow considering how much I paid for the Dyson a couple of years ago. I haven't decided what the replacement will be. (My old vacuum was a Hooever Windtunnel that was highly rated by Consumer Reports and ended up also being a dud...so I've yet to find a vacuum that I am impressed with.)

I also have stairs and bought a cheap vacuum on Black Friday (from WalMart) a couple of years ago. That is our "upstairs" vacuum and the Dyson is our downstairs vacuum. It's really nice not having to drag a vacuum up and down stairs every time you clean!!
