I volunteered to be on a committee to name our new Intermediate School (school for 5th and 6th grade only). I have to come up with 5 name suggestions. I can easily come up with some suggestions to name it for the neighborhoods around it, but I was hoping for something more original. I like things like Liberty, Lone Star, Freedom, etc, but those are taken (just giving you an idea of the kinds of names I'm looking for).

What suggestions do can you come up with? TIA!!

That one's good! Keep 'em coming!! Thanks!

i like the idea of using something that reflects that area's natural environment (acrigulture or topography)-it makes for a harder argument for those "easily offended" by naming a school/team (i've seen hot debats over this-a major pain!).

i grew up in a region that had vineyards, and when they named the high school i ultimatly attended the name chosen was "vintage high". there were also some schools in the area that were named after mountains, valleys and bodies of water.

just remember to suggest names that have a logical tie in to a team name if they will have one. and avoid a name that when reduced to letters could be emabarrassing (in this case, i would avoid anything that starts with the letter "p" pr "w"-cuz knowing middle schooler's you would quickly become the "piss (pis) or wiz (wis) school  ).

Good ones, RadioFanatic.

And a good point about the initials, Barkley!

Ya'll keep 'em coming!

Our area is completly flat... think prairie. There are already schools named for the creeks and rivers. This is harder than I thought it would be!

Our school district recently started 2 schools for the highly gifted and they let the students attending name them. The kids picked Odyssey for the 5-6th gr and Magellan for the 7-8th gr. I thought these were very insightful names about journeys and quests. It is hard to come up with names under pressure 2 days after you pick you'll think of the perfect one!

oooooo, I like both of those! Thanks for the suggestions.

Anyone else???

3 years ago when we had to name the new elementary school the name "Quest" was used. Our mascot so to speak are the explorers.

Have to be very PC and name schools after those who are long dead and can't embarrass us later with "skeletons" in their closets like extra wives or unpaid taxes.

We actually follow a proscribed set of naming rules such as dead astronauts (teachers types are popular of course), equal minority representation, place names, historical significance, and assorted (sports, women and local heroes).

I do say all this with a bit of tongue in cheek but a recent school naming resulted in a name that is extremely difficult to pronounce (after a local person) and almost NO ONE pronounces it correctly which to me makes no sense and is almost a dishonor to this person.

We also have several schools with similar names North this, north that, and so forth. They are so similar that everyone gets confused in our 130,000 student school system and sorting the intersystem mail must be nightmare sometimes!

I'm all for naming schools for the locality they are in; not people.

Well, I am very close to you, but don't know that that helps much, 'cause, as you said, many of the "cowtown-type" names are taken!

Ummmmmmmmm..........

How about:

Trailblazer Intermediate
Mustang Intermediate

DH suggests Armadillo Intermediate (I think that's a bit much).

Xenia - a city nearby, it's Greek in orgin meaning hospitality.
Tallgrass
Sage?

Ya'll are awesome! This is helping so much.

:thumbsup2 I think it would be cool if the students could name it.

The students will be offered some of the choices we parents come up with, and will vote on the name of the school, the mascot, and the school colors. I think it's pretty awesome!
