Suddenly today my computer has gone haywire! I keep getting pop ups that look totally real saying I need to download a program to fix a trojan horse, or that Norton Anti Virus is horrible(that popped up while on the Norton site trying to figure out what was going on) and while here a rash of invitations to online gambling sites!! I have run Ad Aware, Spy Bot Search and Destroy and Norton live update and scanned the computer. Everything SHOULD be fine, but I'm getting popped still. What is this????

Sorry, cant help. I run Zone Alarm, not Norton because I had problems with an old computer, Norton just dissappeared, and I could not re-load it, Norton never got back to me with a solution.

I have zone alarm also. I just tried to see if I had any responses and I got stuck in another website of pop ups and offers to "fix" spyware problems.

What is going on????

I have had your problem a couple of times and I would end up spending some time at this site : Spyware Info .

Go to Malware Removal. Be sure to follow the instructions under the Hijacked Users - Start Here Thread first.

If things do not clear up after following the instructions there, you can start a new thread with your HiJack This log. Be patient. But you will get some very good help over there. Oftentimes it will take some time, but chances are they will help you get rid of your problem.

Good Luck!

I hope that everything is getting straightened out for you. Let us know how things go. :)

We had the same problem with the Gateway laptop. We had a virus called "always up". Believe me, it was. It got to the point that the computer was unusable. I sent it down to my neighbor's son who knows just how to fix things like that. It was the best $50 I ever spent. Now I am using DH's Apple PowerBook G4. I love it. I forgot what pop ups look like! :)

I went to the "start here" area and selected the panda software to try to double check for viruses. Once the program popped up to run though THAT got overtaken by the bogus virus software offers and I couldn't do anything by beat down the pop ups. :guilty:

If you can't follow through on all of the "steps" because of the pop ups, then do whatever you CAN and finally download and run Hijack This. Post the log in a new thread on the Malware board. Be sure to be descriptive in your post title - ie: WinXP Pro with Uncontrollable Pop Ups. In your post be sure to tell them that you attempted to follow the "Hijacked User" thread but were unable to complete the steps.

Keep plugging away - you can get it fixed! :)

Okay, the panda software is running. So far it has found 67 spyware and 1 suspicious file that were not picked up by SpyBot, Adaware or Norton. I can't tell what they are until it is finished though. Strangly now my IE will just close in the middle of things and go to the desktop.

You definately have something that is not easy to get rid of. Probably even after running the Panda Virus scan you will still have problems. But at least you can tell the people at SpywareInfo that you have followed all of their suggestions.
Then you can get started posting over there and getting someone to help you.

Your problem sounds like what we experienced. We tried "Norton Anti Virus"and "McAfee Virus Scan" with no luck. We ended up taking our computer to Best Buy and they installed something called "Spy Sweeper". We were shocked to find out how many things had invaded our computer! Its been nearly a year since Best Buy did this program and we have not had any more problems, so it was well worth the money and getting rid of the frustration.

Panda said 188 spyware and 1 suspicious file. The suspect file is asdf.exe which did find references to but am still not sure what it is. I tried to do the 30 day free trial of the Panda Titanium but when it got to actually install it said I had to uninstall all Norton Anti Virus products which freaked me out a little since I'm very familiar with Symantec and not so much with Panda. Has anyone done that?

I printed out the log....TWENTY-NINE PAGES! No wonder this laptop is slow!

I was just going to suggest your next computer be a Mac- pop-ups are rare- non-existant if you use Firefox. I still don't get why more people don't buy Macs (unless they are heavy gamers)

Did a little research and PC magazine really likes Spy Sweeper as a stand alone product when you already have anti virus and firewall protection. I am running a free scan with that now. I'll go ahead and buy it at the end, I guess, to remove the boogers it is finding. But, it all looks like cookies, noting else. Are some cookies okay and some vicious?

If you are a windows user add the microsoft antispyware off the microsoft web site, I have it on all the computers at work here at the advise of our "IT" people.

I don't think that there are any "bad" cookie, but I don't know for sure. :confused3
But before you spend money on any of these programs, I really suggest getting help from those at SpywareInfo. As I said, they have help me a couple of times with problems like you are experiencing and I have never had to spend an extra dime on any other programs.
