Help me decide: AKL only or split stay WL and AKL?

Help me weigh the pros and cons of splitting our stay. We will be there seven nights and defintely want to stay at AKL at least some of those. We think the AKL is such a unique place--the animals, the art, just the whole atmosphere. We also like the Mara foodcourt at AKL. How do the two resorts compare? We would need bunk bed rooms at both--are the rooms pretty much the same? What about the rest of WL? (We will be there at Christmas, so one advantage of splitting is that we would see both resorts decorated.)

I prefer AKL to WL, but the lodges seem very similar to me. I prefer being somewhere a little more exotic is all. We camped a lot as a kid and I am looking for something different. And the restaurants are quite different. I like the food a lot more at AKL - and the shops. Location means a bus everywhere and a boat to MK would be nice which you get at WL. For me, I wouldn't split. I did a split stay last year and think I like staying in one place and not packing and repacking.

I actually haven't stayed at either, but my friends did the split stay and hated the WL after staying at AKL. It's getting a little long in the tooth. The only plus was it's proximity to MK.
